To think UN should now be in Gaza as a peacekeeping force

Seriously, when even the Daily Express are even calling mass forced starvation and putting pictures like this on their front pages.

Surely the UN could act as a peacekeeping force and stop this insanity?

Its obscene.

I support Israel's right to exist.

Despite being left wing, I recognize widespread anti-semitism on the left.

I recognize that Hamas's existence represents a near-insurmountable obstacle to lasting peace.

I recognize the validity of Israel seeking the safe return of hostages.

None of this precludes Israel committing war crimes, and I strongly believe that they are, and it must be condemned.

If dismiss it, its because you have been radicalized.

Very sensible. I wish there were more people like you.

EsmaCannonball · 23/07/2025 21:02

The UN in Lebanon were either complicit or afraid. There have been other occasions when UN peacekeeping troops have either let atrocities happen or have been embroiled in abuse and corruption. The UN can only be as good as its constituent members and, right now, it is a deeply compromised organisation.

Trump is unlikely to do that though given he has already said he supports the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Other countries such as European nations etx need to unite in sanctioning Israel and using all diplomatic leverage possible - and recognising the Palestinian state.

Similar sanctions to apartheid South Africa tbh who became an international pariah.

Recognizing a Palestinian State is pointless. Who rules this state? The PA? What are its borders? What is its system of government? It's meaningless. I would love to see a genuine Palestinian State but recognizing a fiction is just that. How does that possibly change any reality on the ground? Much better to prevent Iran from ruining yet another peace process and building up the insitutions of state that would be needed for an eventual actual Palestinian State

Israel is not South Africa, totally different situation. THere were boycotts and sanctions from 1948 through to early 1990s aginst Israel - didn't help much. Just like it doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference in Russia. Israel managed without McDonalds for its first 45 years....

Trump has just told Israel to stop protecting the Druze in Syria from genocide so it's true he doesn't care much about dead Arabs. But he is the only one who can make a difference here. Him and strengthening the Israeli voices to end this.

Martymcfly24 · 23/07/2025 21:09

Israel has fired on Irish peacekeepers in Lebanon this year and in the late 80's murdered an Irish soldier so I would be very unwilling to send more of our soldiers there knowing their complete disregard for human life.

I disagree about the Palestinian state being pointless. It’s more than a symbolic act now- it would give them international rights. It doesn’t really matter at this point if it was the Palestinian authority who governed- it could be a condition of statehood that a new governance structure is established.

But it’s critical - the West Bank is being illegally settled by the far right israeli settlers. Action has to be taken before there is no Palestine left.

Of course they should, but they can't as long as the US is on the Security Council.

The Knesset voted 71-13 in a non binding agreement today to annex the West Bank so it is quite clear what the future holds for Palestinians.

(Agree with your post about a Palestinian state)

Of course - Gaza mark 2. And the world sits and watches.

It’s way beyond time to act - the performative language backed up with no real action by David Lammy et Al makes me rage!

And yet all the adults holding these alleged starving dc all seem so very well fed. There doesn't seem to be any common sense 'journalism' reporting that these poor dc may well have have significant medical problems.

It’s because children starve first. If there was no food at all adults will last weeks whether a very small infant will die in days.

First, as you are pointing out, children under 5 with medical issues die, mostly babies that need formula for one reason or another and Israel is currently blocking the delivery of baby formula. But soon older children start to die.

By the time you see the adults walking like skeletons, like you are asking to see as proof, mass famine will have set in and thousands of children will be dead.

Perhaps they will be subjected to the same starvation tactics to clear the land. Or maybe just bombed.
To be fair either way it's not like any other country is willing to actually say stop.

Could the palestinian 's war posts be in the middle east section instead of everywhere. It's a bit tiring.. is not the only war!

God, the fact that you have to explain that little kids starve first shows the absolute horror of this situation. Utterly horrendous

Sorry you find the mass starvation of children tiring and the need to discuss it and raise awareness on an actual parenting forum that talks about children.

Christ.

Why has NO country sent an army to help?

Probably because Israel would treat it as an act of war and nuke them.

It just doesnt make sense.

The UK has intervened in other wars.

Why has NO country sent an army to help?

Because that essentially means going to war with the US (and under its current deranged leadership, to boot).

Rchyt · 23/07/2025 21:27

Although I agree in principle, such a step will never be approved by the UN and, in particular the US, at this stage. Peacekeepers can only be deployed as part of an agreement with the consent of those involved. To deploy now would be logistically impossible and effectively require an invasion force willing to enter Israel and into combat with one of the best equipped militaries and nuclear capability.

The only solution is a diplomatic one and for the US to exert some real pressure on Israel to stop.

Flumpflimpo · 23/07/2025 21:27

I do think its disgusting that Gaza has been left to get to the state it is in.

They have murdered 900 people who were queuing for aid, cant imagine they would play fairly on a war field either.

I don’t think an army is the answer. That would just mean more war, more suffering.

I think suspending trade agreements with Israel would put pressure on them. Targeted sanctions and visa restrictions.

An army was the answer in world war 2.

Agree.

But it needs to be big and it needs to be quickly to exert enough pressure because the situation is time sensitive.

Flumpflimpo · 23/07/2025 21:31

People need to do fucking something. Children are dying.

All the countries dont want to get involved because they are scared of israel and usa

Flumpflimpo · 23/07/2025 21:28

An army was the answer in world war 2.

As much as I disagree with Israel’s actions, the U.K. can’t just get involved militarily.

It has to be immediate significant sanctions in conjunction with multiple other countries.
