Bob Geldof announced Gaza Aid 2025

Wait no......Bob is simply reminiscing about Band Aid 40 years ago. Has Bob given up his passionate zeal or as is more highly likely like most high profile musicians decided the Gaza conflict is one to stay well away from and they don't want to be seen the dupes of Hamas propaganda.

Not many big names on TV and the stage are wading into this for good reason and those that do are certainly the naive lovely types.

I watched the Live Aid retrospective with nostalgia but was disappointed how shallow Bono was, so preoccupied with his hair and performance. Younger me watched him at Live Aid and thought he was adorable, developed an insta-crush and bought every album.😂😂
Bob Geldof and Midge Ure have stood the test of time, Boy George has not and I watched his 1985 self with fresh eyes.

I will never be able to listen to 'drive' without crying.

quantumbutterfly · 14/07/2025 16:00

The whole retrospective program was interesting.

The role of Russia in the civil war.
The offence at the charity single title when Ethiopia claims one of the oldest Christian traditions.
The world doing what the Ethiopian/russian government should have.
The russian solution to the refugee camp was to move all survivors to more fertile areas in troop carriers, not a universally popular solution, very autocratic, possibly successful but probably face-saving.
It was wonderful to see the young woman whose father was told there was no hope and his daughter would die.

Thought provoking.

He's worth 150 million. Not sure it would go down well if he asked ordinary people for money.

True. I was quite cynical about Bono's vision for live8, seemed narcissistic.
Michael Burke's report had astonishing repercussions, great things were achieved.

I liked Geldofs book Is That It. Very evocative of my own childhood in the same place . Except he went to Holy Ghost Fathers , Blackrock. Very serious money. Ok not his fault. But I don't think he has a Scooby how the plebs live . Never has.

He came from money? Read his book but didn't pick that up, will have to dig it out and reread, memory fades in 40 years🙂he's had some tough things to deal with though.

My other half had a bit of a middle class punk, pyjamas as day wear thing when younger. Fingers was his inspiration

No free secondary education in Ireland til 1968. Blackrock is the Eton equivalent. Ridiculous list of senior politicians and media tarts among the alumni.

That's an eye opener. I thought he was naturally smart🙂but a good education always helps.

I wonder what would happen if a film crew were allowed into Gaza to film the starvation - just as happened when Michael Buerk filmed the Ethiopian famine

Honestly? You are trying to compare some (by internet search) 60+ starved dead Gazans with the (by internet search) 1,000,000 starved to death Ethiopians?
Do fuck off.

What do you think would happen if a film crew were allowed in to see what was happening?

Dabralor · 14/07/2025 18:42

Well if Sir Bob finds a way for me to give my money to all those kids on the Gaza strip who are currently starving and being shot at, then I will gladly donate.

(I am also sad about the hostages and don't support hamas, just for the record.)

Each one of those 60+ Gazans is a person.
Each one of those 1,000,000+ Ethiopians was a person. This isn't about measuring the suffering of numbers of human lives over other numbers of human lives, ffs- I'm sure you didn't intend for your post to sounds so callous but jeezo.m

cakeorwine · 14/07/2025 18:46

Of course we would know better what was happening in Gaza if international journalists were allowed into Gaza to see for themselves.....

When Simon Reeves went in (pre 7/10) he was only allowed to film certain narratives (and definitely not hamas or the pij frat house). That's what has been reported in the past by other journalists not under hamas control.
You can still find it on i-player.
Contrast the life of Gazans to their hamas honchos in Qatar. Question why they needed to make bricks out of waste when there was plenty of concrete for tunnels.
I doubt you'd see anything as apocalyptic as Michael Burke's report if the hostage release scenes are anything to go by...unless hamas wanted you to.

Do you think that it would be different now, after all the bombing?

International journalists aren't allowed into Gaza

WitchesofPainswick · 14/07/2025 18:47

WTAF is this thread about?! Is this a 40 yo zombie thread? Geldof is 73. Think he's done his bit.

Maybe hassle Ed Sheeran IDK

You might find the series interesting, I recommend it. I don't think hamas allow such a thing as an independent journalist. TBF you could get into trouble taking pictures of the wrong thing even in Egypt 30 years ago and they didn't have as big a security problem then as they do now. I wonder how the march for Gaza people are doing.

I've seen it. I remember the interview with the fisherman and the woman who made bricks.

And the pij frat house? And the pervasive sense of fear?

I don't think Israel is Gaza's only problem. Did you catch his travels in Libya too?

soupyspoon · 14/07/2025 19:01

Given there was so much criticism of him for either being the big old white saviour or having 'too many' white acts, why dont people of Palenstian heritage or ME heritage arrange a Gaza Aid? Why it would be for some old school, past it pop star to do?

Please tell us how powerful the pro-Israel lobby is. Who are they? How do they exercise that power?

Who? We could start with AIPAC. How? They funded pro-Israel Republican and Democrat candidates to the tune of over $100 million in the last election. The largest single source of funding. Any election candidate who doesn't take a pro Israel position is therefore at an immediate financial disadvantage.

So that's America not Britain, but clearly what the US do then influences the UK and others.

Whereas American universities receive several hundred million dollars from countries like Qatar, which could explain some of their reluctance to say that calling for the death of Jews on campus violates conduct codes

Yes probably true. But ultimately they are far less influential on the world stage than the US government and President.
