Israels plan for Gazas future

Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday that he has instructed the IDF to prepare a plan to establish a "humanitarian city" on the ruins of Rafah, which would eventually house the entire population of the Gaza Strip.

According to Katz, the plan involves moving 600,000 Palestinians, primarily from the al-Muwasi area, into the new zone after security screening. Once inside, residents would not be allowed to leave, the defense minister said.

Katz added that, if conditions permit, construction of the "city" would begin during the 60-day Israel-Hamas cease-fire currently under negotiation.

Did Trump not say months ago that all of Gaza had been destroyed and therefore the Gazans needed to move out as it was uninhabitable? So if the American president acknowledged it what does damaged and destroyed mean to you?

If there were people living close to you who wanted to kill you would you expect your government to take some action?

Except Palestinians don't have that right do they? They don't get to have an army to defend themselves from the people who don't just live close by but the people who live in their homes ans who want to kill them. That's my whole point. We never talk about Palestinians right to defend themselves against the people who want them dead. The people who commit pogroms against them. The people who terrify them marching down their streets calling for their deaths. Why are you here talking about Israel defending themselves when I was talking about Palestinians right to defend themselves? What are your thoughts on the rights of Palestinians to defend themselves from the people who want them dead?

Palestinians have got Hamas to defend them don't they?

Oh wait ... no they don't.

Maybe it's time to rid them of Hamas so they can be ruled by people who actually give a shit about their lives instead of praising them for being martyrs ... just a thought.

I somehow doubt that the satellite imaging was used to count a broken window or fence. And that was added to these stats as damaged homes. That said, they haven’t published a criteria, so I can’t disprove it. If I find a criteria, I’ll drop it in here since it’s of interest.

I’m off for now.

This old chestnut again, Hamas, Hamas, Hamas. Think long and hard about what could replace them. Because it could be about to get a whole lot worse for Israel.

Well it couldn't get much worse for Gazans and they are the ones you are more worried about.

You didn't answer? Do you support Palestinians right to defend themselves from the people who want them dead?

Is anyone who is pro Israel here willing to answer that?

No I don’t. But I don’t agree with much of the narrative that goes on this board either. And I’m sick to death of people thinking they know it all, throwing the same old shit out every day, and asking me to hold a mirror up to myself for self-reflection, or critical bloody thinking. I have a degree and two Masters. I am well able to do critical thinking and self-reflect.

Yeah, they kind of do. The UN uses satellite imagery analysis and AI to assess building damage in conflict zones like Gaza. They anaylse

Changes in roof structure

Debris scatter or collapse patterns

Missing sections or shadow distortions

Each structure is classified into one of several damage categories. Their recent report said they estimated as follows:

About 60 to 69% damaged or destroyed and within that number....

Destroyed: 32%

Severely damaged: 12%

Moderately damaged: 35%

Possibly damaged: 22%

So their report said 60 to 69% affected and from that roughly one-third of all buildings have been destroyed, while the rest fall under varying degrees of damage.

They specified damaged included thing like "possible scorch marks" on walls.

Shrug.

If I read claims, I go and research to find out if they're true.

It's not unusual to find claims about Israel range from misleading to complete bull shit.

Which irks me. If it's the worst war ever, why the need to always embellish? I've never seen that happen before with any conflict.

Except when it comes to things like toddlers being massacred. Then you just repeat propaganda.

I can't say I've ever seen claims like 40 beheaded babies, babies hung on washing lines(?), babies in ovens and babies being cut out of pregnant women either. This conflict really started off with a bang with the fake news didn't it.

I know. Its so obvious that everything Israel does is exceptionalised and the reality, awful as it is already, is exaggerrated Great swathes of cities are rebuilt after wars - are they not aware how much of London & Europe was rebuilt after the second world war. Hamas are totally embedded in civilian infraatructure - what in earth do they think was going to happen? Ask them nicely to come out with their hands up like in the movies?

I don't really understand the question.

Apart from, in a war - both sides will be trying to win which means both attacking the other side and trying to defend themselves & their citizens from being attacked .

Palestinians have the "right" to try to defend themselves, yes. But unfortunately for them, their military is Hamas and they aren't doing a very good job of defending Gaza or the civilians that live there.

Largely because all they are interested in is attacking Israel not in defending their citizens.

The UN estimates that approximately 92 per cent of all residential buildings in Gaza – around 436,000 homes – have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the conflict.

This is from the UN website. Is the 60-69% referring to all buildings?

ForgesOfEmpires · 11/07/2025 21:58

Incidentally, UNRWA didn't make a mistake. They tool the raw data from UNOSAT and deliberately presented it in a misleading way.

So basically, if you read the news stories circulating..

  1. They ommitted that 66% are not destroyed but just damaged.
  1. They ommitted that a lot was just possible scorch marks or a small hole on a roof or many things that might not be related.
  1. They quoted it by saying "housing units" to deliberately mislead. So what I mean by that is, if an apartment block with 100 apartments in it showed any sign of even possible damage, like a shadow - they implied the entire, "unit" - meaning all 100 homes, were destroyed.

It's a really disappointing and crappy way to go about it, but global journalists don't fact check. Draw from that what you will about UNRWA but I'd be more likely to take my gardener as a reliable source.

Add to this, I work with NGOs. I write briefs and anaylse situations in and around the middle east on a variety of situations and I have never seen anything like it before.

I find it seriously disturbing.
