Why is Israel attacking Iran and vice versa?

Can anyone explain, simply and objectively, what is happening between Israel and Iran? It seems mad to me that Israel would take on another war right now!

Um…

Overtheatlantic · 13/06/2025 22:56

All history aside, Israel is feeling emboldened by trump and his band of loons. Netanyahu is also hardline.

SharonEllis · 13/06/2025 22:58

Why would you trust what anyone on here says over verified sources like the main broadcasters or broadsheet newspapers?

Agree credible media sources are best but I have not seen any simple, accessible, short (not a book or a 10,000 word article) explainers on why Israel has gone to war with Iran now, and the history behind the action. Do share if you know of any!

TokyoSushi · 13/06/2025 23:01

The theory is that Iran is developing nuclear weapons at a very fast rate, so Israel are attacking them to stop that before they use the weapons against Israel.

We could write for weeks about ‘everything else’ that goes with that.

SharonEllis · 13/06/2025 23:06

Google why did Israel attack Iran and the
first thing that comes up

HellsBalls · 13/06/2025 23:08

Iran has vowed to destroy Israel. The only way that is possible is with nuclear weapons.
Iran is therefore building nuclear weapons to destroy Israel, under the guise of nuclear power generation.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has just found Iran in breach of its commitments/requirements and Iran is producing weapons capability, not power, nuclear capability.
Israel have taken Irans constant and public commitment to destroy Israel seriously and launched a preemptive strike against that capability.
They told their allies well before the operation, and were not stopped.

Thanks @HellsBalls

But why might Iran want to destroy Israel? What’s in it for them?

They hate Jews. They’ve vowed to destroy Israel. They’ve been attacking Israel for years via their proxy’s. They sponsor terrorism all around the world

Because MN is used by a wide variety of mainly intelligent people, many of whom can explain things in a more understandable way than the mainstream media.

You see this is exactly why you shouldn't trust mumsnet. This one is nonsense.

Iran has vowed to destroy Israel for decades. They are a theocratic Islamist state and they hate Israel. They sponsor proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah and they are the biggest state sponsor of terrorism. A large Iranian plot was recently foiled here and Jews in this country are at risk from Iranian/Iranian backed terrorists.

MeganM3 · 13/06/2025 23:30

Because the nuclear bomb Iran are building is a massive threat to Israel (not only Israel).
They were at war for many years.
Iran would be likely to attack Israel when strong enough, they want all nations in the Middle East to be Islamic, so Isreal are fighting Iran through fear of future attacks from Iran. Targeting their weapons and the people in charge of the weapons.
Nuclear was is bad news for everyone on earth.

This is completely untrue. Israel and the Iranian people are huge fans of each other. Neither (apart from a minority of Iranians) support the religious fundamentalist leaders. It would be better for practically everyone in the world (apart from the Ayatollah) if he and his cronies were removed from power so they stopped destabilising the Middle East and threatening to destroy Israel, the US, the west…. You get the gist.

High unemployment & too much religion.

Killing each other in the name of their god is just what people in that part of the world do. It’s deeply ingrained in their history & identity, and a fundamental part of their culture. It has been going on for centuries and there is absolutely nothing anyone in this country can say or do to stop it or prevent it.

The best thing we can do is arm both sides, making as much profit as possible in the process, and let them fight it out. Because the fewer religious fundamentalist nutcases in the world the better.

PITCHpink · 13/06/2025 23:48

OP you won’t get a straight answer here, a dozen posts in and there are already arguments over who is right who is wrong.

Though I do think @SpottedDonkey has nailed it. Religions that can’t live in peace, never could and never will and in the meantime thousands of innocent civilians killed. It will never end because the next generation will grow up hating the opposite side and so and so on…..

Because they’re Jewish.

inkognitha · 13/06/2025 23:56

A land grab is an extremely improbable motive … Iran and Israel don’t share a border

BreakingBroken · 14/06/2025 00:34

Iran funds Hamas and the Houthi’s.
Both very destabilizing chaotic groups.
BTW, the attacks were extremely precise with very few non military casualties.

Messycoo · 14/06/2025 00:52

Iran has been bank rolling Hamas and Hezbollar from day one.
Hamas attacked Israel in October 2024, a diversion tactic as America was about to sign a trade deal with Saudi Arabia. Iran hates the west and especially USA. Hence due to the pre arranged trade deal did not go ahead.
This is the main reason IMHO for which Israel has attacked Iran. Also by finding Nuclear weapons is another reason why Iran must be stopped.
Iran is the perpetrator who has used Palestine, as a scapegoat therefore training and suppling terrorist. mainly under the name of Hamas.
I have seen hardly any reporting regarding since the since the October attacks.Iran is killing and destroying Palestine its own people to get at the west .
