Conflict in the Middle East

Yikes, Israel might have just attacked Iran!

SomeWomanSomewhere · 13/06/2025 01:17

This is NOT GOOD news!

Israel has declared a state of emergency, at least six explosions in Tehran.

This is seriously unfunny!

Israel has ZERO strategic depth - Iran has plenty. Nukes: see above, reverse!

Multiple simultaneous car explosions now, being reported in Iran? Is it pager attack mark 2?!

Apparently Trump has stated confidently that there must be, and will be, peace SOON. He's really got his eye on that Nobel Prize I think.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 15/06/2025 15:13

Also just read a piece in the Guardian that some of the first wave of attacks involved drones from secret locations inside Tehran. I know war depends on subterfuge, but with all the new technology I think they should revise the "rules". It's the Geneva convention right? Going to go and have a Google.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 15/06/2025 15:16

Ah, so the Geneva convention is about humanitarian treatment of non-combatants. Still think we could do with new rules around engagement perhaps. Or am I as stupid as I think I sound?

An influencer said that he has the signs of dementia (apologies to anyone with family with dementia don't mean to compare) and I am increasingly believing this. The bravado followed by denials, now he's going to bring peace when he was going to destroy Iran hours ago. It's discombobulating and no way to negotiate. I'm also starting to lean towards the astro crowd who've being saying Trump is here to destroy America.

BelleHathor · 15/06/2025 15:25

Misstress not stupid xxx.

The first wave involved drones hidden on trucks activated by people (Mainly Indian and Azeri) that had been recruited by MOSSAD over the course of months.

Additionally the Iranian Air Defence systems were hacked and it took over 12 hours for Iran to gain control.

The Iranians have been arresting these agents over the last 48 hours (approx 70 so far) and capturing the trucks.

You are right though that again this sets a new precedent for rules of engagement and no one will be able to complain if the same tactics are used on them.

Oh Good Lord. Slightly reminiscent of my estranged and batshit step-mother who may or may not have the onset of vascular dementia on top of long term mental health issues, is under the mental health team but has enough capacity to sell her house allegedly, yet can't operate the TV without assistance and firmly believes I'm part of a Satanic cult and prostituting myself. At least the only person she can screw things up for now is herself. Yikes, indeed on the Trump front 😳

And therein lies the problem. The whole region has been so destabilised by "meddling" often justified by some excuse of bringing democracy or freedom especially to women. In truth it's all about control of resources (Oil, minerals, shipping lanes).

I often chuckle to myself when all the women are described as oppressed (not discounting some regimes where this is the case, though we're happy to trade with them aka Saudi). They're just as diverse as we are, listen to a Lebanese or Iranian woman tell the men off in Arabic or Farsi!

The way to change the regime if the 93 million Iranians living in Iran actually want that is not through bullying but through trade. BRICS is working towards that building a land bridge that will pass through Iran on the way to Europe. Prosperity will allow travel and the sharing of ideas. We can learn so much from Iranians as they can from us making us all richer on the end.

I wonder what the region would be like if / when we’re no longer as oil/ gas dependent. Bring on nuclear power and clean energy. The countries with minerals are already the new battlegrounds - Ukraine, Congo, Antarctica maybe.

This sounds quite reasonable indeed. Diversify the trade routes, the old Silk Way and Spice Routes.
But we need reasonable people in powwr to implement that. And we have hardly any worthy leader at present. I do hope indeed that soon there is the opportunity to carry on with peace trade deals and prosperity.

MushMonster · 15/06/2025 18:10

On Antarctica, this one is meant to be very much out of scope. But as every Tom and Harry are doing whatever they feel like these days, we can never say never....

I have no idea, but this cycle of violence can't continue. Control of resources has historically caused too many problems.

Funnily enough a lot of the players in this region are also players in Ukraine, Congo, Antarctica anything for the love of money.

I'm following Ibrahim Traoré in Burkino Faso, the western press has painted him as a dictator cause he had the temerity to ask for a fair price for the minerals sold. For this there have been multiple assassination attempts on him. He is also hated because he is seen as being in the Russia/China camp. He is building schools and generally attempting to improve the life of the locals. If he was still selling the minerals to us with only 10% going to Burkino and 90% to France, he would be fine and we would look the other way even his he was abusing his people.

And therien lies the problem, the leftover chains of Colonialism and Imperialism need to be completely cut.

I'm hopeful for the future as our children have much smaller worlds and are much more aware of fairness. Imagine a world where children could grow up, travel, live and share culture instead of sharing bombs!

(Sounds very much like a contestant in Miss World or something!)

How Sahel states ditched Western mining interests – DW – 02/14/2025

Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso no longer orient themselves towards France or Western business interests. As demand for raw materials grows, this pivot may have significant consequences for Europe’s mineral supply.

Long live the Shah’s son, Reza Pahlavi!

I vaguely remember the scandal when his father threw what was then the most extravagant party in history—something straight out of Marie Antoinette’s Versailles. Even the CIA started to worry that such excess might topple their carefully managed puppet. Half the population lived below the poverty line is it any wonder people wanted change.

I know you claim to be well informed so where are your sources for the the residences and shopping habits of people on a short tik tok video? Funny because the diaspora Iranians I know include 1 delivery driver and his family living in one room in South London and a charity worker living on the outskirts, nowhere near Knightsbridge and some young refugees living in a flat in Essex. I can guarantee none of them have ever had a Harrods delivery.

"The first wave involved drones hidden on trucks activated by people (Mainly Indian and Azeri) that had been recruited by MOSSAD over the course of months."

Do you have any links to back up the involvement of Indians or Azeri?

Or are you simply trying to sow further divisions?

Is there no room for a bit of humour? I probably made it up half inspired by a recent stroll past some immaculately dressed protestors at Hyde Park Corner after taking in the Chelsea and Belgravia in Bloom displays. The other half comes from following Nioh Berg on X, who seems tireless in pushing the Pahlavi line.

That said, calls for violent regime change should always be treated with extreme caution. History shows again and again that such upheavals carry a high risk of societal collapse. Just look at post-Gaddafi Libya: what began as a revolution quickly descended into chaos, factionalism, and civil war. Tearing down a regime is one thing; building something better in its place is quite another.

And as for the exiled "opposition" those who’ve spent decades abroad passion alone doesn’t grant them a clarity of truth. They’re the furthest removed from the complex, lived realities on the ground, and arguably the least qualified to make that call.

What I said.

If the Islamic regime does fall at some point, then we shouldn’t expect a liberal pro-western government to emerge. Without a well-armed opposition inside the country, elements of the armed forces are best-placed to emerge on top in any fight for power. They would learn the lessons of past failures and perhaps pose less of a threat abroad, but what limited freedoms exist in Iran might be closed further.
The alternative is fragmentation, as happened in Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia. In Iran, such a process would be on a much bigger scale as Kurds, Arabs, Baluch, even the well-integrated Azeris fall back on ethnic nationalism in a country where Persians form barely a majority of the population. One lesson from recent decades is that the fall of repressive regimes doesn’t always lead to a better outcome as there is no one to hold to account and terrorist groups will thrive in ungoverned space. Iraq has finally emerged as a better place, but it has taken 20 years since Saddam Hussein was ousted, even with the country’s huge oil wealth.
