Yikes, Israel might have just attacked Iran!

This is NOT GOOD news!

Israel has declared a state of emergency, at least six explosions in Tehran.

This is seriously unfunny!

Israel has ZERO strategic depth - Iran has plenty. Nukes: see above, reverse!

Oh and on the weapons used over the last 2 nights, Iran mostly used 20 to 30 years old missiles from their stockpiles. Only a couple hypersonic missiles were used on high value (military and economic) targets.

No more than 200 missiles have been used so far.

I don't think the overriding thought when Gaza is getting bombed by Israel is they think "thank Allah for that they are freeing us from Hamas oppression" .

Agree, but some seem to actually believe that.

HellsBalls · 15/06/2025 11:17

@BelleHathor ”Also the 200'000 number may include cheaply produced drones (advanced versions of the ones that helped Russia take over 20% of Ukraines territory and greatly reduced Russian casualties).”

Maybe. Russia just passed 1,000,000 casualties in Ukraine though.
Which is why there is not going to be a ground war in Iran.
It seems Israel will stop when either told to by Trump or they have achieved their aim of destroying the Iran nuclear program, or set it back substantially at least.
Iran could have avoided this by just not trying to produce an atomic bomb to destroy Israel.

That Iran Wonk tweeter has been reached out to LBC to go on a show. That should be a goodie.

I'm still working my way through the thread from the beginning, so please forgive me if this is already covered. do we really think that Iran were developing nuclear weapons? hasnt the accusation that they are months away from developing them, been going on for decades? they signed up to the none proliferation treaty and have inspections regularly as I understand it?

Yes, the monitoring and international pressure is partly what slowed them down. Yes they are very persustent so here we are decades later. Thats the point of the monitoring and deals. They were just in breach.

Yes we have covered it. Several times.

Well, there's no point attacking a country that is planning to nuke you in hindsight, is there?

to prevent them first ?

Another good article in the FT highlighting how people rally round the flag when under attack. Iranian resolve and a desire for a better but nevertheless continuity remains strong.

https://archive.ph/GVaQH

Mohammad Fazeli, a prominent sociologist, said his “professional life” had been devoted to criticising the Islamic republic’s “poor governance”, and he recalled how his comments had led to his dismissal as a university professor. Now, however, he has called for “national solidarity” against a “foreign enemy”.
He wrote on X: “Iran must remain, so we can strive to build it from within. Stay Iran — you are our home.”

Some opponents of the Islamic republic blame decades of “meddlesome” regional policy for the latest conflict. “Look at their regional policies and look at how they treat their own people. They have caused trouble in every corner of the region. Why are they pitting us against Israel and the Jews? They triggered a dangerous person like Netanyahu to the point of attacking us,” said Maryam, 37.
“What do we need [uranium] enrichment for? Where is our nuclear-generated electricity? They have invested so much in missiles and nuclear power. What do we get in return? War?” Maryam asked, saying she hoped Iran would continue to negotiate with the US to “finally end this mess”.

After Netanyahu used the Iranian “Woman, Life, Freedom” slogan — which dates back to protests three years ago over the death in police custody of a woman accused of being improperly dressed — and urged people to stand up to their “oppressive regime”, women’s rights campaigners accused him of hypocrisy.
“That slogan coming out of the mouth of a criminal like him for his personal and political gain destroys its meaning,” said Nastaran, an advocate for the movement.

No idea when the last inspection was ? Does Any one else know.
Yes they’ve signed up to the treaty so in theory should be of the same thinking as all others who have
Israel of note, hasn’t signed.

If you read the whole thread he thinks that Iran forgoing "the axis of resistance" , accepting dismantling of its nuke program with international inspectors, Trump's desire for a deal and the West's reluctance as to regime fall (same with Russia - NATO fears regime collapse c 1990 as for the chaos that may cause impacting geopolitical stability). Israel gets relative peace and an end to tormenting from aligned neighbours. Everyone should jump at this deal it's probably the best one that will emerge. Ceasefire in Gaza , letaid in and we can all forget about what has just happened.

He does mention apparently from insiders the Yitzhak Rabin threat.

My fear (as as Israeli) is this move by Netanyahu could potentially be seen as an act of heroism and garner more support from his supporters or those on the fence. I truly believed he’d be ousted at some point because there’s enormous civil unrest here and it looks like most Israelis want him gone. Maybe that was his game plan. He’s hated by so many of us but he knows his audience and is self serving so….

There was a report released a few days ago saying that Iran was violating the terms by the IAEA.

That needs to be read though with the fact that Iran stated recently that it had obtained 1000s of documents through a spying operation that it alleges shows that the IAEA was sharing sensitive information (names of nuclear scientists etc) with Israel. The documents also show the locations of secret Israeli nuclear sites.

That's why the timing of the attack by Israel is interesting.

If he were rational, he would take the win, retire as a hero (at least in Israel), and face the music. But hubris is a powerful drug along with the lure of power, which currently shields him from accountability.

Let’s hope there’s enough power remaining to encourage his rationale..

Kindatired · 15/06/2025 12:26

to prevent them first ?
It’s not that straightforward. We’ve lived with the threat of nuclear war all our lives. Netanyahu is capitalising on Trump unsuccessfully applying the rules of business in the world of diplomacy. The development of nuclear weapons by Iran was about to reach a critical stage in the coming weeks, but Trump didn’t pull off the nuclear deal. This conveniently coincides with Netanyahu’s personal legal problems so Netanyahu bombs Iranian nuclear facilities and some top scientists .
But the problem is that the Iranians have known for decades that this will happen , so they’ve put the key facilities deep underground. Only the US have the weapons to deal with the underground facilities ( look how much progress the IDF have made in Gaza- the top is razed, the tunnels still there). Now the Israeli attacks are expected to push popular opinion in Iran in a hawkish direction, making future nuclear deals very challenging. Although the nuclear deal negotiations were painfully slow and unproductive , regime change in Iran was inevitable- the current Ayatullah is pretty old and struggling to manage the aspirations and expectations of a young population and the EU is grooming the an alternative regime which can either take over or nudge the next regime towards the centre.
So the Netanyahu plan is to drag the US and UK into the conflict with a view to destabilising and replacing the regimes in the neighbouring countries and to have an expanded Israel as the regional power . We will see the English and other British and Americans coming back in coffins but probably not too many Israelis as the field of war won’t be Israel itself

Considering he has to travel with doctors, it looks like he has nothing to lose and he is willing to take everyone down with him/

A video circulating on social media on Saturday night showed a Jewish family cheering as Iranian ballistic missiles fell in Tamra, sparking outrage from many officials.

“On the village, on the village!” a man could be heard shouting in the clip. He and others then broke out into singing the anti-Arab phrase “May your village burn,” clapping their hands as missiles rained down on the neighboring city.

Well I will open the question to all of the Israeli PM's critics. I've never seen so much hate for somebody who is protecting his own people.
