Conflict in the Middle East

Yikes, Israel might have just attacked Iran!

This is NOT GOOD news!

Israel has declared a state of emergency, at least six explosions in Tehran.

This is seriously unfunny!

Israel has ZERO strategic depth - Iran has plenty. Nukes: see above, reverse!

I had innocent Israelis in mind who were targeted by today's attack by Iran too but go figure.

Sure you did 😂

If Iran had nuclear weapons, the claim that they’d simply nuke Israel is a massive exaggeratio they might be hostile, but they’re not that irrational. Even if they used one or two low-grade weapons, Israel would retaliate by striking Tehran and destroying every significant military asset in the country. It would be absolute suicide for the regime.

Iran want Israel eradicated - by whatever means necessary.

No - nobody serious thinks that.

Everybody KNOWS that.

That is very likely what Israel is about to do now in fact, after that barrage of missiles.

I am in the UK. I’m British.

Ideally no one would have nuclear weapons; but for goodness sake; Donald Trump is a nutter and the US has nuclear weapons!

Donnie is just passing through. Another president will be along soon. However the stance will not change.
The US, as well as France, UK and most other relevant nations will never allow Israel to be destroyed.
So don’t fret.

Whatsinanamehey · 13/06/2025 21:27

Can I ask, what is, if anything is being done, to de-escalate right now by any other countries?

Israel are not the child murder’s that Hamas are. They won’t just attack Tehran indiscriminately, or my name is not Tommy Robinson.

I agree. I think they'll go after infrastructure and cripple the regime.

Is this satire? Have you conveniently forgotten the indiscriminate murders of Gaza’s children?
No sides are innocent in these awful conflicts - only the civilians and especially children.

I don't think there is much scope for de-escalation this time. The last 2 times in operation True Promise 1 and Operation True promise 2 (after the assassination of Haniyeh and Nasrallah), Iran negotiated through a third country for a limited response in exchange for a ceasefire in Gaza (Russia and China also cautioned restraint).

That was obviously taken as a sign of weakness and Iran's foreign minister says his country rejects calls for restraint.

The IAEA’s Rafael Grossi has also confirmed radiological contamination at the Natanz Nuclear Installation in Iran.

Well their indiscriminate bombing and forced starvation of the population has killed 14,500 children in Gaza in well under two years (UNICEF). Israel isn’t exactly bothered where innocent civilians are concerned be they adults or children.

Didn't you have a rant at me the other day for apparently accusing you of not having compassion for Palestinians even though I said nothing of the sort to you and it turned out to be another poster. But its OK for you to falsely accuse me of not caring for innocent Israelis? I think that is being very hypocritical on your part.

or the Children killed this morning in Iran. There is a particular horrendous picture of a little girl under rubble.

Nah I'm pretty sure that was someone else.

Repots (unconfirmed as yet) that Israel has now launched a counterstrike on Iranian targets.

anotherside · 13/06/2025 22:09

Interesting Freedland piece in the Guardian. His conclusion - a short term win for Israel but will surely just lead to Iran doubling down. And one final pertinent point that I thought Freedland could have also added was the lesson of the Iraq war: you may as well go after the nukes as if the wind changes the US will target you whether you’re actually developing them or not.

HellsBalls · 13/06/2025 22:22

It’s not a win for Israel, it’s a win for the region.
Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear capabilities. (“Death to Israel! Death to America!”)

"Saying that, i don't think other Nuclear countries can force Iran not to have it. That's just hypocritical."

It's unfair that the US, UK, France, Russia, Israel and China have nuclear weapons and I don't.

I think I should be able to have a nuclear missile in my garden as well. I promise that I will be responsible with it.

Seriously though are you really saying that Iran, a country that has attacked British ships through its Houthi proxies, a country that has detained Royal Navy sailors and marines on several occasions and a country where recently 5 Iranians were arrested for plotting a terrorist attack in London should also have nuclear weapons because well the UK and US do and it would be a bit unfair otherwise.

I think so, from the BBC

"We're getting reports of more explosions being heard in Iran's capital, Tehran.
State media reports that Tehran's air defence system has been activated to counter Israeli strikes."
