I think it's a real positive that brave Gazans are now protesting against Hamas openly demonstrating at least some of the population can see it is Hamas that has brought death and destruction to the enclave.

The irony is that war trodden Gazans are protesting in harsh conditions possibly risking death against Hamas while in your average 'Pro Palestine' March in London there are very limited signs with Hamas out. Should we start anti Hamas protests in the UK in solidarity with Gaza?

Wide angle photograph of hundreds of people walking through a street in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza as part of an anti-Hamas protest

Hundreds join largest anti-Hamas protest since Gaza war began

Masked Hamas militants dispersed protesters who gathered in northern Gaza to rally against the group.

I don’t agree with this in any way.
What “gross generalisations” are you referring to?

This just as one example.

"A bit confusing for some of the pro Palestinian marchers in London & other UK cities.
Some of them will be more pro Hamas than many Palestinians living in Gaza now."

Is the only coverage of that on Al Jazzera this or am I blind? Hoping for the latter, quite sure it's the former though.

Agreed .
I hope also that Netanyahu realises that bombing citizens ( many of whom oppose and detest Hamas) is not the way forward .

Agreed.

You know you can be both against the actions of Israel and Hamas? Many posters are generally even if they disagree on certain aspects at times.

They hardly ever are though, are they? It's always talk of how Israel deserves it and how Hamas might be bad but Israel is worse etc.

Hopefully seeing this will give some people a bit of a head wobble.

Whatsinanamehey · 27/03/2025 07:49

Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun, Jabaliya have all experienced devastating bombing since Israel have launched their murderous assault again. Now you see what the Palestinians who want peace are up against from all sides.

I think there is truth in that statement “some “ ( not all ) marchers have appeared more pro Hamas than the Palestinians in Gaza

The BBC have reported it and the Telegraph - maybe other media sources too I am unaware of.

Agree with this. It’s heart breaking

Who is dropping the bombs on the heads of children?
For those of you who saw footage of the protests it was against both Hamas, Israel and a call to end the war.

Thank you - I tried to make it clear that I didn't think all marchers in the UK are pro Hamas (though some plainly are as we see from the placards) or that all Palestinians in Gaza share the same opinions either.

I know they did. Sorry I couldn't edit by the time I realised it was missing "this"! That appears to be the only coverage Al Jazeera has on this. No mention of it being anti hamas.
Shameful if that really is it, but quite confirms the Hamas mouthpiece accusations. Shame, used to love their coverage on things worldwide pre this war.

Hamas is killing children. It was one of the horrendous atrocities they committed which started this war.

War is awful but Israel at least tries to limit civilian casualties.

BeHere · 27/03/2025 07:59

Interestingly there was some mention on social media of protesters chanting against Al Jazeera for not covering it initially. Looks like some ordinary Gazans have noticed that they're a mouthpiece.

I did wonder initially if it were genuine, but notice that the Israelis have killed quite a few top Hamas people recently. Which obviously has weakened them, but also raises the question of whether other Gazans have been sharing intelligence.

Oh I see - yes that is disappointing from Al Jazeera.

I also have enjoyed reading their coverage of worldwide news in the past. People accuse the BBC of being biased ( & maybe they are I’m not sure) but not on this scale.

Kendodd · 27/03/2025 08:04

Yes, I think it's brilliant news, although probably too little too late.
I have always thought Hamas has a lot more support amongst ordinary Palestinians than some like to pretend and wiping out Israel completely is a dream they won't give up. Likewise, I think many, many Israelis have their own 'river to the sea' dream and would like every Palestinian gone. The hatred runs so deep on both sides. It's very, very sad.

I was discussing this with my husband yesterday… with so many top Hamas officials being killed recently it does indeed raise the question of whether the IDF are being tipped off by locals re where they are located.

News of these protests from within Gaza do make that seem more plausible.

Yes, I agree, Israel does try to limit civilian casualties, although with 50,000 dead, I'm not sure how hard. I'm not sure this is because they actually value Palestinian lives much though, I think it's more public image. Every dead Palestinian child is a propaganda win for Hamas, Israel know this.

Well I'm sure that's true to some extent. I think in any war there will be civilian casualties and the pressure on Israel to somehow have zero innocent lives taken is ridiculous. Hamas started a war; this is what happens in war.

To turn the argument around there appears to have been more anti Hamas protests by Palestinians in Gaza than anti Hamas protests by the Palestinian marches in the UK.

This is despite the fact that protesting against Hamas in Gaza risks getting yourself killed whereas protesting against Hamas in the UK should be safe, although clearly there is the case of Niyak Ghorbani being assaulted and arrested by the Met Police in London for describing Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

HermioneWeasley · 27/03/2025 09:07

Reminiscent of the incredibly brave opposition to the Iranian government (who of course fund Hamas and the Houthis)

Madcatdudette · 27/03/2025 11:41

It is brilliant, brave and inspiring.
It takes balls to protest against the government and imo it’s the right thing to do.
Hamas has an agenda that doesn’t seem to align with the your everyday Palestinian.
Politics should never be based around religion.

ScrollingLeaves · 27/03/2025 14:38

I was struck watching the news last night by how the protesters include so many young men who up till now have been effectively presumed to be terrorists.

Surely no one presumed that all the young men in Gaza are Hamas terrorists.

I mean if they were then who would be the bakers, builders, plumbers etc etc.

I don’t think anyone assumes those men are terrorists.
The terrorists are the government, not general population.

User37482 · 27/03/2025 15:25

It’s incredibly brave, I think a lot of Hamas’ crimes against Gazans themselves are overlooked in the west. I remember a few months ago a young anti-hamas activist had both his arms and legs broken. I don’t think you can be pro-Palestinian and pro-hamas, they have done nothing good for Palestinians.
