I'd be fairly worried about a state that has no respect for international law and a leader due at the Hague having secret nuclear weapons.

I'd hope that anyone with an ounce of sense would.

25milesfromhome · 11/02/2025 00:29

Yes I see what you're saying, Iran and North Korea are definitely states to worry about.

The two unhinged megalomaniacal world leaders currently engaged in a dick waving contest hold the codes to the majority of the world's nuclear weapons (over 12,000 between them out of an estimated world total of 13,080) so they're higher up my list but I understand your worries if you feel disproportionately about the situation.

Are these countries trying to displace 2 million citizens to other countries? Do you have a link about this?

The topic of the thread ? Or was it whatabouterism and nothing to see here in Israel the other posters comment?

wholettheturnipsburn · 11/02/2025 11:19

How did the people who were displaced and resettled throughout Europe manage?

I know families whose grandparents lived in different countries, over borders, and theirs families have turned out just fine, with great cultural affinity to their roots

Why is gaza different?

Are you trying to justify ethnic cleaning because it was fine for some people?

wordsworthundercover · 11/02/2025 11:37

@wholettheturnipsburn It is unreasonable to create a refugee crisis and then push the consequences on to other countries. There are huge tensions around large influxes of refugees.

Adropinthepond · 11/02/2025 11:41

Why are people condoning and encouraging ethnic cleansing? That's quite sick.

And idealising the refugees ignoring the situation many of them are going through just because it worked fine for some

Didn't mass displacement in Europe and countries forcefully annexing other regions contribute greatly to both World Wars? Isn't part of the Ukraine/ Russia conflict much as about the borders that were drawn in the past?

This romanticism of past Colonial practices of displacement through redrawing borders is a sight to see.

No

And definitely no

@EasterIssland I'd be ever so grateful if you could kindly say

A. Where I justified anything.

B. What you mean by "idealising" in the context of refugees. I'm not clear what you mean.

Well, I will agree that forcing refugees into other countries causes tension. That's maybe why their is reluctance by other countries to step up and welcome Palestinians

However I asked WHY gaza was different. I'm not sure I understand.

  1. Because it worked for some why couldn’t it work for people from Gaza.
  1. Your second paragraph.

It is 2.2 million people, a huge amount. How are people who don't want to leave going to be made to do so? The population of Gaza are already refugees who have been displaced. The population are traumatised, there are many orphans, many amputees or disabled, so they have requirements for ongoing health care. There are other reasons why it's particularly difficult for the people of Gaza to be refugees. Primarily, most nations have agreed to a 2 state solution, and it is reneging on that promise. It is better to avoid creating refugees in huge numbers in any situation, and I think it's quite possible to avoid doing this to Palestinians. As a by product we would not be destabilising cohesion in the rest of the world, which will affect us all.

wholettheturnipsburn · 11/02/2025 13:01

@EasterIssland Sorry still don't see how I idealised Palestinians

What do you mean by that ?

i didn’t say you were idealising Palestinians. I said refugees

Fuck me. This is like pulling teeth

@EasterIssland you said.

"And idealising the refugees ignoring the situation many of them are going through just because it worked fine for some"

What does that mean "idealising". You are using the present tense

Actually don't bother, I'm guessing the meaning is gone now 🤣

We should want better for everyone. Destroying the homes of 2million people and forcing them out of their country isn't acceptable to most of us.

The way you ask that makes it sound as though anything other than these fascist ethnic cleansing plans is unreasonable.

I think the people of Gaza should be allowed move back to their homes, which Israel should pay to rebuild (obviously that will never happen but it should) and they should be supported to hold elections and try to piece their destroyed society back together. Maybe there's a role for the PA in this.
