I'm surprised this hasn't already been posted but Ireland passed a non binding motion a few days ago that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza”.

What about the Norman “invaders” ?
How far do you back ?
It’s completely ridiculous to talk about recent generations of Anglo Irish as “invaders” .

Sorry you think the history of England coming over killing our citizenship removing our autonomy is ridiculous.

Seriously pick up a book and read it. We no longer have our language, we lost part of our island. Your arrogance is a wonderful example of usually the ignorant UK education system.

I’m Irish . I’ve relatives who died in the war of independence.
Ffs move on . Ireland is a very affluent country nowadays. Stop wingeing and think about people who are suffering now .

Limesodaagain · 13/11/2024 19:19

Really exasperating how people with very good lives in safe countries are just desperate to insist they are victims.
What about things that are happening NOW

People are suffering now. We are still awaiting justice for family members murdered by the English soldiers. How dare you tell me to move on.

Some of us are dealing with the impact generations after the war of independence. Your comment is hurtful and arrogant.

Fine you do you but don't tell me my nation isn't still worth protecting and ensuring our history is not bloody just given the UK version.

Were you born and raised in Ireland? Because I have seen you say before on a thread you've Irish relatives.

People aren't whinging they are trying to correct misinformation. No one wants to be discussing Ireland here but other posters keep starting threads on the country

I didn’t say OUR nation is not worth protecting. I just think talking about the Anglo “invaders” in 2024 is ridiculous.
Ive family in the North - Catholic . I know very well what horrible things happened. Many of the worst horrors perpetrated by the IRA . Those victims families are still awaiting justice ( Jean McConville?) This talk of “invaders”
is dangerous and inflammatory and borderline racist

Racist? How so @Limesodaagain

Racist? How so @Limesodaagain

Because it’s treating people born in Ireland as “other” by implying they’re the progeny of “invaders “

Limesodaagain · 13/11/2024 19:31

The Anglo Irish were described as “invaders”

People born in Ireland aren't invaders, where did you get that?

JaneJeffer · 13/11/2024 19:32

The Anglo Irish aren't a different race 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Marblesbackagain said “Let's be very clear. English people who came to Ireland and took up land and property that the Irish had been evicted from were invaders.
Given the length of time that some of those families have been here, and in the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement they are considered to be a permanent fixture. Though most big up their Irishness now..”

That sounds pretty “othering” to me . Considered to be a “ permanent fixture “. And they “big up their Irishness” Their families have lived there for hundreds of years … They ARE Irish

It's literally what they are. Exactly how would you describe? We didn't have a dispute about land, they didn't overstay a visit

They themselves use the titles of a foreign state! Lord x etc. that is not Irish title! So yea while welcome please don't be ignorant of where their loyalty may lay.

Yes I agree they are Irish. That was one poster so it's easier to challenge them on the specific post. We are from all walks of life with different views on where the country is at and where it should go.

Fair enough - but some views on where the country should go do need to be challenged …

I just think that Ireland’s history has been bloody enough and I think it’s important not to judge people as “foreign invaders “ based on something that happened hundreds of years ago.

Marblesbackagain · 13/11/2024 19:47

Well apologies for wanting the past remembered and not rewritten inaccurately as it iiin a lot of UK school books.

JaneJeffer · 13/11/2024 20:01

I think we can say that they are just as Irish as the rest of us even though their ancestors may not have been. "The moving finger writes and having writ moves on" and all that jazz.

Snoopyandlucy · 13/11/2024 20:16

Yeah, I think you’ve gone too far describing people living in Ireland now whose ancestors came from Britain as ‘invaders’ @Marblesbackagain.

I’m Irish and the loss of the language was huge so I do understand your frustration with pp there.

Haven't you said before that you're English with Irish ancestry?

It was in the context of you making the argument that Ireland isn't generally pro-Palestian and that you'd know as you're Irish. But I believe you then said that you are actually English? I'm confused by your comments here again.

Kindatired · 13/11/2024 20:30

Rhasidat Adeleke is Iris, Lee Chin is Irish. David Norris is Irish. Alan Shatter is Irish. A link in another post used an analogy of marbling in the meat. A Nigerian Irish child is an Irish child as much as an Aran Islander. Is Rachel Allen Irish? Does anyone even think like that apart from Aontú supporters?Would Ireland be Ireland without diversity? We would have a solid green flag with no gold and no white and that would not be us at all. It would be some sort of Neo—Nazi gombeen man banana republic, and that’s assuming anyone survived without our migrant health workers.

To understand our present we need to know where we have come from, but it doesn’t mean one person has greater entitlement than another.

Israel is not pursuing a path to peace, it is pursuing on a trajectory that will lead to endless war, preceded by genocide, and succeeded by a resurgence of antisemitism on a massive scale.

What is relevant about Ireland is that there is a roadmap. Not a solution, a just a difficult, challenging long road map.

The key components include elements like cessation of violence, dialogue via intermediaries, demilitarisation, police reform, disarmament, self determination, recognition of dual identity, fair electoral representation, parity of esteem for the language, religion and culture of both traditions, economic supports to divert young men away from extremism, inquests, tribunals, forums enquiries to uncover the truth about miscarriages of justice, wrongful deaths and imprisonment . Constantly occupying land on security grounds and then persecuting the owners when they object and then doing the same again is definitely not on a path to peace and security

The starting point on the map has to be a two state solution and Likud’s plan is to have a single state with top status for the Jewish majority .

Nope. I did not say I was English . Not sure why it matters to you though.

I also think the point I was making was more along the lines of “ there is more than one opinion in Ireland- not everyone feels the same about this issue “
But it’s nice to know you remember me 😁

I've never in my life heard someone claim that Ireland is not generally sympathetic to Palestinians.

The take was so wide of the mark that I could never forget it.
