I'm surprised this hasn't already been posted but Ireland passed a non binding motion a few days ago that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza”.

I've never in my life heard someone claim that Ireland is not generally sympathetic to Palestinians.

The take was so wide of the mark that I could never forget it.

i said there were other perspectives in Ireland.
But maybe I was wrong…

Obviously there are different perspectives in every country. But in general, as I said, Ireland is sympathetic to the Palestinian struggle.

In general I think that’s true .
I don’t think I ever disagreed with that .

Yeah, I think you’ve gone too far describing people living in Ireland now whose ancestors came from Britain as ‘invaders’ @Marblesbackagain.

I’m Irish and the loss of the language was huge so I do understand your frustration with pp there.

I stated the historical individuals as invaders. I clearly states their ancestors separately. However my posts obviously couldn't be referenced correctly by a certain someone......

I quoted your actual words …

** “Let's be very clear. English people who came to Ireland and took up land and property that the Irish had been evicted from were invaders.
Given the length of time that some of those families have been here, and in the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement they are considered to be a permanent fixture. Though most big up their Irishness now..”

Limesodaagain · 13/11/2024 22:18

If families whose ancestors had moved to England hundreds of years ago were told they are now considered a “permanent fixture” as they … big up their Englishness. It would sound pretty discriminatory.

You actually continued with your claims even after I challenged them - referencing Anglo Irish who are “lords” ..
You said ..
”They themselves use the titles of a foreign state! Lord x etc. that is not Irish title! So yea while welcome please don't be ignorant of where their loyalty may lay.”

”They” ….!
“Their loyalty “ …
🙄

Exactly those historical is the first paragraph the second relates to their ancestors. I went on to clarify those who still use and adopt their "heritage" titles. I have clearly said I support the good Friday Agreement. You appear to be reading some of my posts not all.

And? You don't see using a UK title in another state as being disrespectful and disengenious? Because I do.

Marblesbackagain · 13/11/2024 22:25

@Limesodaagain maybe have a read of the no poppy wearing child thread. Trust me England isn't as welcoming to the Irish that they're claiming to be.

The Good Friday Agreement has got nothing to do with any of this .
You started off talking about invaders .
You shouldn’t be describing fellow Irish citizens in ways that suggest they are not “really Irish” and you question “their loyalty “
These are people who have lived in Ireland for hundreds of years .

Actually I have the right to my opinion as an Irish citizen, but thanks for telling me I shouldn't.

The good Friday Agreement has everything to do with it. Go read up on all the work around it and the legacy it has.

What proportion of the “invaders” ancestors are titled lords ?

Why don't you go do some research. Last time I checked I wasn't employed as one by you.

Well - you don’t really have the right to espouse hate filled or racist or discriminatory opinions.

And you can’t use the Good Friday Agreement as justification for “othering” one section of the Irish population

So my opinion on my nation and our issues has to meet a certain volume? That isn't how it works.

I am fully entitled to my opinion.

I didn’t say OUR nation is not worth protecting. I just think talking about the Anglo “invaders” in 2024 is ridiculous….

It's literally what they are. Exactly how would you describe? We didn't have a dispute about land, they didn't overstay a visit

I don’t know. The bit in italics I’ve quoted above is of you replying to a pp.
Maybe you meant to talk about historical individuals but it really doesn’t read like that.

Addressing the nuances in posts is ridiculous as it is beyond multifaceted. But yes I do want my country all of my country for the Irish. I am a proud nationalist. Isn't everyone ?”

Im not sure what you meant by the words in bold - it definitely seemed to me you were implying that Anglo Irish ( the families whose ancestors hundreds of years ago were “invaders”) were not really Irish . I think that’s a racist, bigoted viewpoint.

Every country has suffered problems in its past - many countries were continuously invaded from all directions ( Poland/ Afghanistan)
Ireland could regard itself as fortunate to be an island as it only had one oppressor to contend with …
Ireland is now a prosperous and safe country - unlike so many places across the globe .
Yes there was a sadness about the past and we do need to acknowledge it . But it”s now that’s important.

Back to Palestine …

Usernamesareboring1 · 14/11/2024 07:41

Limesodaagain · 13/11/2024 19:19

Really exasperating how people with very good lives in safe countries are just desperate to insist they are victims.
What about things that are happening NOW

I think attitudes like this is why Irish people are exactly why empathy and solidarity with the Palestinian people is so common. There are still people suffering and mourning now. Families like mine are still mourning people murdered within our lifetimes and the generational trauma that is in a lot of Irish families. It's not exasperating for people to talk about the realities of what people have been through and why that makes them understand what people in Palestine are going through especially when posters were replying to the suggestion that Irish people are colonisers and kicked the poor British out of their homes.

Usernamesareboring1 · 14/11/2024 07:45

I'd also say the "shut up and get over it" attitude to Irish history is exactly why the suggestion they have a similar historical struggle to Israel is ridiculous. Ireland's history isn't that important but if we wanna talk about Israel we need to reflect back on 3000 years of history 🙃

Fair enough- let’s keep talking about Ireland’s tragic past. Maybe it’s only me who finds it’s exasperating in current circumstances and on this forum (CITME)
