I see the old thread is sadly almost full. I wonder how many of these I will start? 😢

I agree with you completely about what Ben Gvir did. He took what was obviously a fragile compromise and turned it into an act to goad Muslims.
The irony of using prayer to incite violence .
I just didn't know anything about the issue and wanted to read up on it today ..

If you look at the pattern of his behaviour, in words and actions, they are almost always controversial and contrary to maintaining stability. It is no wonder he is known as the 'minister of chaos'.

Martymcfly24 · 13/08/2024 19:40

As a previous poster said it is classic Trump like behavior.
If there was not evidence of the unbelievable acts and words of aggressions you simply could not believe anybody nevermind someone in a position of power could behave like that.

Haaretz

"Gaza's schools have been closed since the war began, and the buildings serve as shelters for the displaced civilian population. This is a well-known fact, even to the IDF. Some of the people sheltering there were sleeping, some were praying the morning prayers in the compound's mosque. The Israeli public has heard nothing about them, certainly not from the Israeli media. All over the world the media serves to reveal the truth, but in Israel it acts like a babysitter whose job is to protect the citizens so that they won't be forced to know what is happening" – Sheren Falah Saab

The UK media isn't much better. If it wasn't for social media we wouldn't know half of the things that have happened. It's a disgrace.

Finally got a chance to read this piece, it is a very disturbing read and highlights how important it is for the international community to safeguard Palestinians in this conflict. Israelis are unable to take on or accept Palestinian death and suffering or care about it due to their own, which is a very scary space for Palestinians. Their lives and suffering don't matter to the IDF so the international community need to protect them from this revenge and the them or us mentality.

I think you put this well. The article compellingly portrayed this.

Read the article it talks about it is a collective mentality. There's no judgement here just trying to understand it.

I would say the article contributes considerably to an understanding of why Israelis might have certain attitudes towards Palestinians which people looking in from outside would not, even at the same time as showing the tragic outcome.

Dulra · 14/08/2024 22:52

Hmmm if you keep needing to say you're the most moral country and the most moral army it kind of suggests the opposite. I have never heard any other country describe themselves or their army in that way.

ScrollingLeaves · 14/08/2024 23:32

Haaretz’s description of these poor men.
It is a bit like using them as throwaway slaves.

“At first it's hard to recognize them. They're usually wearing Israeli army uniforms, many of them are in their 20s, and they're always with Israeli soldiers of various ranks. But if you look more closely, you see that most of them are wearing sneakers, not army boots. And their hands are cuffed behind their backs and their faces are full of fear. The soldiers call each of them a shawish, an obscure Arabic word of Turkish origin meaning sergeant. Random Palestinians have been used by Israeli army units in the Gaza Strip for one purpose: to serve as human shields for soldiers during operations" – Yaniv Kubovich & Michael Hauser Tov

IDF uses Gazan civilians as human shields to inspect potentially booby-trapped tunnels

I just saw a video of someone placing a little boys legs in a bag next to the other half of his body. He couldn't have been more than 3 or 4. I can barely comprehend the things I've seen these last 10 months. I can't wait for the day that justice is served.

The Today programme on Radio 4 about 2:50 mins in, talked about a book written by a Palestinian who had experienced a dreadful and tragic event in the West Bank when a bus full of nursery children overturned and caught fire on an Israeli road. No ambulance arrived for over half an hour even though it was a well used road.
It is through this that we also learn of the desperate conditions the Palestinians live under there where even trying to get the children to hospital was fraught with difficulties and checkpoints.

Haaretz
The Numbers Show: Gaza War Is One of the Bloodiest in the 21st Century

As the Gaza death toll approaches 40,000, Haaretz examines the data from a global perspective. The rate and pace of deaths - as well as the living conditions of those still alive – overshadow the conflicts in Iraq, Ukraine and Myanmar

One of the favorite arguments of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and other Israeli spokespeople, is to accuse the international community of hypocrisy concerning the war in the Gaza Strip – and to claim it is ignoring other conflicts and humanitarian disasters.

PeasfullPerson · 15/08/2024 16:55

Really insightful article that delves into the perceptions within Israel that are used to justify the atrocities in Palestine, and touches on the traumatic history and experiences behind it.

How depressing and lonely it must be
to see this while being among it.

I think the recently deceased Israeli psychologist Kahneman would say that Israel as a state is suffering from being unable to accept any outside views, no matter how valid they are.

Thanks for sharing @EasterIssland would recommend people reading this.

Haaretz

ISRAEL-IRAN: Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz met with visiting counterparts from the U.K. and France and said, "If Iran attacks, we expect the coalition to join Israel not only in defense but also in striking significant targets in Iran."

It feels wrong to me that that is their expectation.

Haaretz

Israeli critics have also argued, not without reason, that Netanyahu wants to pull his U.S. and Arab allies into a full-blown war, presumably hoping that Iran can be vanquished along with its axis. We might not live to know if the strategy works" – Dahlia Scheindlin

On the Israeli left, there is still an alternative to all-out war with Iran

That's a crazy strategy from Netanyahu, his megalomaniac tendencies are gambling it on all or nothing.

It is an extraordinary feeling to see that propaganda of fear video and
suddenly look from a Western, breezy, sense of security into
this dark underground network of tunnels prepared for war.

Imagine having tunnels begin enough for huge trucks carrying weapons

It absolutely is, this is the first time ever that Hezbollah have "shown" the extent of their capabilities. Some experts are speculating that it's precisely because they don't want an escalation and they're hoping the sight of it will knock some sense into America to reign Netanyahu in. Gallant has already called his fantasy of an absolute victory nonsense.

Tunnels were used by the Vietnamese to beat the American during that war.

Just seen footage of a horse being shot dead whilst pulling a cart of food I think. Was the horse Hamas?

Mellowdramadrama · 17/08/2024 18:33

@anotherlevel the IDF do alot of killing, already at 40,000 deaths. I don't think they would be too bothered by a horse if they pay no mind to humans or even newborn babies

The Horse was just carrying flour. I had couldn't watch it, the indiscriminate killing is a level of darkness never seen before.
