Boycotting Israeli products/services

the7Vabo · 18/06/2024 15:54

I’m trying my best to support the boycott. For those doing the same - what products/services are you using instead?

The hardest one for me has been giving up on going to Disney Paris next year. I had planned it as a joint birthday present, kids will be the perfect age. But I can’t stand in Disney with my kids knowing they support a regime killing kids.

Any good alternatives to Disney, or any other brand on the list?

I rather feel we're in an another league here, we didn't buy carrots for the dogs as they were from Israel last week. I mean, we go through around 5kgs of carrots a week, but it's not quite a Disney holiday...

I should clarify I was referring to this list of brands - https://bdsmovement.net/Act-Now-Against-These-Companies-Profiting-From-Genocide

I’ve also seen brand such as Pampers, Coke on other lists.

Certain one for me I almost can’t avoid - Google - do I start all over with my emails and photo storage and with who?

Stuff like carrots can be easily bought elsewhere, other stuff is more tricky.

Also, for a small country Israel seems to produce/hold interest in a lot.

I'm not going to boycott companies for donating to humanitarian projects.
Be careful with BDS as they have been accused of making this an anti Jewish thing. Just like we don't hold Muslims responsible for Hamas, we dont hold Jewish responsible for Israel's behaviour. From ADL "Increasingly troubling are incidents involving BDS advocates holding all Jews culpable for the Israeli government’s actions, and advocating a litmus test for Jews to renounce Israel and/or Israeli policies in order to join certain social activist movements."

Thanks for your reply I’ll certainly read that article.

I’ll confess I know almost nothing about BDS. I had heard certain things like McDonalds giving out meals to the Israeli army and went looking for the longer list as such.

Like many if not most Im horrified by the current situation in Gaza. I’m started go wonder why wee both teaching history I’m schools, clearly we don’t learn any lessons from it.

I want to do what I can.

No thanks app
You might be surprised by which companies are under the same parent company , nestle often turn up as not a great company, they own Maggie and Rachel's yogurt (which looks like a cute independent brand)

Thanks for providing a handy list of companies to support.

Can I ask what would motive you to support companies on such a list?

Good luck boycotting Teva pharmaceutical medications. In pharmacies in the UK, most of us get what we get given by the pharmacy and have no say in the matter.

Teva is huge. Israel’s biggest export by miles is pharmaceuticals, mostly Teva. British pharmacies have grown very dependent on them.

I’m on multiple medications and Teva medications make a regular appearance.

It’s not exactly giving up a Disney holiday or a burger, is it?

MissyB1 · 18/06/2024 17:30

Thank you OP, lots of companies I can avoid quite easily. We know we won't be able to boycott them all, but I will do what I can.

Came here to say the same

Because I don't support terrorism and find the way the Jewish population have been treated in recent months to be abhorrent.

But the boycott is aimed at Israel’s actions in Gaza.

It's an unofficial form of sanctions promoted by an antisemitic organisation. I don't agree with sanctioning a population based on the actions of their government, especially when it directly leads to racial segregation, supports hate speech and leads to hateful actions.

Dilbertian · 18/06/2024 18:14

Hmm
HelpAGirlOut1234 · 18/06/2024 18:15

We have been using the No Thanks app, lots of my usual favourites have been replaced and I have a note on my Tesco delivery not to deliver any fruit/veg of Israeli origin.

I also don't support terrorism @Sunshineonasameyday ... but in the same vein, I sure as hell will not be giving my hard earned money to companies supporting an absolutely horrific genocide.

All birthdays, Mother's Day and Xmas day gifts from my family and friends have also been cash donations to charities supporting the Palestinian aid efforts.

I'm not given a choice of having Teva medication or not. I hand in my prescription and the pharmacist gives me medication. I need Thyroxine and It's usually Teva. I don't have a problem with taking this.

But how is boycotting McDonalds for example sanctioning a population?

The population of Gaza right now is being butchered in front of our eyes. And what did McDonalds do. In front of the world they fed the army doing it.

Nothing would motivate me because Israel still needs to get back their hostages. They were taken illegally and any means they used to get those hostages back could be seen as necessary as the Palestinian government refuses to release them.

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 18/06/2024 18:22

@caringcarer that's a pretty uneducated statement. There are rules of war to prevent crimes against humanity. And it is Hamas holding the hostages, not the Palestinian people.

thinkfast · 18/06/2024 18:27

Can we assume that you're boycotting all Chinese goods and services as well OP, in support of the Uyghurs? And all other countries who commit human rights abuses?
Or is it just Jewish countries trying to defend its citizens from terrorists that you're avoiding?

INeedAnotherName · 18/06/2024 18:27

Good luck OP. Personally I'm not into boycotting large brands until I know more about that particular company. We've already seen hatred against a certain banking organisation who isn't directly involved but holding shares for some of their bigger customers - which impacts their other customers like me and you, as well as other businesses who use their services (who employ people like me and you). Music and literary festivals for instance. Companies are too interwoven and global now. Boycotting fruit and vegetables, or clothes, made in Israel is different, and achievable and might make a statement. Global companies not so much. Write letters, organise petitions, call your MP every week, go on a march, etc are better routes.

@caringcarer said the Palestinian government, which is of course the terrorist organisation Hamas.

Do you know if your cash is definitely going to aid the suffering Palestinians? Or could you be inadvertently supporting Hamas?
Just saying

As a pp asked, are you boycotting China because what they are doing to the Uyghurs truly is genocidal.
