Has Syria been forgotten and who is to blame for civilian deaths in this region. It is Assad or rebel groups?

(Its a conflict in the middle East with huge civilian casualties but doesn't involve Israel so I guess this thread will for a death)

I don't think HTS will want another war but I don't see them being allies with Israel. Also Israel have also crossed the buffer zone into Syria, this is unacceptable and I'm glad atleast the Arab states are condemning it.

The UN has too. Frankly, the Israeli government appears to bomb whoever they want with no repercussions. Yesterday, they had tanks 27 miles away from Damascus. Imagine any other country doing this? No I can't either, except rogue states.

Auvergne63 · 11/12/2024 15:56

They have breached the buffer zone. Do keep up.

Xenia · 11/12/2024 16:44

Thank God for the English Channel - our buffer zone as it were... although I hadn't realised Assad's wife's parents lived so close to me until they fled the UK, never mind that ex Hamas man. I suppose that proves we all tend to live happily side by side in the UK (other than Jewish children here in North London who are not free to take a bus to school without being subject to abuse which is completely unacceptable).

"😂 it's a version of truth. Hence, buffer zone for security is seen as land grabbing forever 🙄"

The difference is when Turkey does it then it is a "buffer zone for security" but when Israel does it then it's a "land grab ".

Personally I see both scenarios as a legitimate "buffer zones for security " but of course others will have a different view on Israel for reasons that they don't really want to admit!

They cannot admit them, or perhaps they don't care. It's a strange thread.

I know it's very sad. The rise of anti semitism in the UK is shameful

It is unacceptable, but its disingenuous to suggest that is the only minority that faces discrimination.

Papyrophile · 11/12/2024 20:03

Really? I'm with Xenia. Being an anti-semite seems to be the final permissible version of racism that won't get you banned on social media... because it's a numbers game.

Really? So you also think that it's only Jewish children that face discrimination and in xenia's words 'everyone else tends to live happily side by side in the UK.

The things some people get away with saying on here is absolutely shocking and disguising it as "oh hopefully they'll be able to go back to Syria ". Disgusting.

A sensible suggestion I heard earlier on the radio was that those who have refugee status but not naturalisation be able to keep their refugee status if they decide to go back to Syria so if things go wrong again they have the option to come back. That is something I would get behind, give people the choice safe in the knowledge that if things go wrong and they have to leave they have somewhere they can go.

Yes - that sounds a good plan. I imagine most refugees would prefer to return home ( providing home is safe and there are economic opportunities) I hope they won’t need to come back - but can be part of the rebuilding of a democratic and peaceful Syria.

I’ve watched a TV journalist reporting live for the first time in 14 years from her home town of Damascus, she couldn’t hold back her tears , she spoke so eloquently of all hardships they’ve faced living away from home ,about the threats they used to received under the Assad regime.
for all the "hopefully they can go back and rebuild Syria" sayers , You needn’t worry people will return back to their homes when it’s safe for them. the deeply embedded hatred you hold for other minorities is really shocking.

JaneJeffer · 11/12/2024 21:18

I don't understand your post @queenofarles 🤷🏻‍♀️

queenofarles · 11/12/2024 21:23

Forgive me if I misunderstood your post jane but it seems some posters just want Syrians to pack up and leave , , yes eventually people will leave and go back home when it’s safe for them to do so.
there is a deep xenophobic undertone behind it.

I agree with this and I'm glad it has been said. Some of the posts have really been shocking.

I feel like I'm fighting on more fronts than Israel on here at the moment

I don’t know if you meant my post ? But I was agreeing with a pp who said they should be given the right to return to UK if Syria became unsafe again. I don’t think anyone should be forced to do anything but I think most refugees would prefer to be in their home country ( providing it is safe and has economic and educational opportunities for their families ) I think Syria needs its talented former citizens to help it rebuild ( but only if it is their choice . Some may have traumatic memories and might prefer to build a new home elsewhere)

JaneJeffer · 11/12/2024 22:04

you actually make a valid point.

what I’m trying to say is people do want to go back, and are starting to go back , some will wait it out for few years , its all too soon and things will be unpredictable for some time.
Of course there are many who have adapted to life in the west and see no point in returning except to visit family. And this has been the case for centuries, people escape wars and set up new lives elsewhere .

Within Israel, Israeli Arabs have the same rights as everyone else. Are you talking about West Bank or Gaza or both?

I didn't know this. So looks like before Oct 7th, I'm only referring to Gaza. Correct?

Complete tosh and you know it.

There's a massive litany of injustices by Israelis against it's non Jewish but particularly it's Muslim population.
