Out of the 901 off-line cases of anti-Muslim hate, there were 535 reports of abusive behaviour, 77 threats, 83 assaults, 79 acts of vandalism, 69 cases of discrimination, 39 acts of hate speech and 19 examples of anti-Muslim literature.

Greatest rise in anti-Muslim hate in UK since Hamas's attack on 7 October

Incidents included verbal threats, online abuse and in one instance, a Muslim family had the word "Hamas" written on their front door, a UK-based organisation has said.

There are loads of complaints on Twitter (and If true many have complained directly on ch4) against Rachel riley for a post on Twitter from yesterday where they were hinting the attacker from Australians attack was a Muslim and that these is what the marches in the uk in favour of seeking a ceasefire are after.

Yup, she's been trending for hours.

A lot of prominent accounts amplified the incident as being "Islamist" in nature and promoted a lot of hateful racist attacks.

There's a thread on site stuff about Islamophobia.

Islamophobia on Mumsnet www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/5039412-islamophobia-on-mumsnet

Also, I have also requested for there to be a Muslim board.

For anyone that doesn't already know, the Muslim mumsnetter board is now live!

Rachel Riley needs to wind her neck in. The events in Sydney and the surrounding furore are a damning indictment of the power of confirmation bias and how quickly lies can spread when people want to believe them.

In a different side of the same coin scenario, ‘Aussie Cossack’ who specialises in spreading Putinesque propaganda and disinformation tweeted identifying a Jewish man as the attacker, with a name and a linked in profile. https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/crime/got-the-wrong-guy-sydney-uni-student-wrongly-named-as-bondi-attacker/news-story/c90b6486815a1a1573172f24bc02adb0

Twitter then went into an antisemitic meltdown, with proclamations such as Jews shouldn’t be allowed to live in Australia, the usual blood libel about them killing women and children and suggestions of witch hunts trying to find out where Jewish communities are in Sydney, particularly in wealthy suburbs. Absolutely shameful.

Two really terrible examples of how fear can be weaponised. Both equally horrible.

Yup, twitter was a cesspit yesterday in terms of antisemitism and Islamaphobia.

Rachel does need to consider the factions that she's encouraging as many of those people are only supporting her so that they have an "acceptable" way to be openly racist towards Muslims. As soon as it is no longer useful they'll return to their standard operating procedure of blaming Jewish people (note: I'm not trying to be antisemitic, but these supremacist sorts hate all minorities).

I had the misfortune of listening to that space and a user with the number 88 in his user name (a neo nazi reference to the letters HH aka a phrase that the Nazis used) arguing that the "White man" built Australia and all minorities need to leave

Some very dangerous people are coming out if the woodwork.

25milesfromhome · 14/04/2024 13:00

Agreed, the ferocity of the hatred and the speed with which it can be globally amplified on SM is terrifying. I despair of people who choose to exploit suspicion, intolerance and division when they could use their platforms to really make a positive difference.

It seems like in this instance the number 88 was indeed a fascist reference.

Can I please make a quick side note here that in Chinese culture the number 88 is considered lucky.

So please can everyone remember not to immediately jump to conclusions when they see this number.

Efacsen · 14/04/2024 13:32

That's interesting and good to know @PeasfullPerson - guess that the context is the giveaway

Thanks for pointing this out, let me second this, a normal positive symbol has been hijacked for evil.

That is true, to be fair, it is, and I am sorry for it.

I simply think this kind of thread is putting an "all lives matter" slant on the current situation.

I recall how awful Muslim persecution was after 9/11 and it paled in comparison to what's happening now.

It certainly feels like being gaslit when the streets are covered every single weekend in Jew hatred for months on end

How dare you. I was a Muslim with a Muslim family after 9:11. It was awful. Don’t you dare minimise it.

Things got so out of hand so rapidly- there doesn’t seem to be any accountability whatsoever on a micro or macro level for unquestioningly spreading such anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish hatred. I’d hope people could take a moment to stop and consider their outlook and motives for willingly taking part in making a such a horrific, tragic situation even worse.

False claims started spreading about the Bondi Junction stabbing attack as soon as it happened

Some accounts falsely linked the attack to Islamist terrorism, while others identified the wrong man, with the error repeated by a TV network

Mumsnet have been advised that someone found it offensive, and that seems to be enough nowadays. I mean, rather them than me trying to monitor these boards.

Actually, in order for something to be deleted it needs to contravene talk guidelines.

In theory.

I'd like to know how my post contravened any guidelines, unless it was deliberately misinterpreted.

Ask Mumsnet. Your post in effect blamed Muslims for the 7/10 attacks and your crazy uncle comparison suggests they need to get their house in order, seriously.

Auvergne63 · 29/04/2024 16:12

if you’re seriously asking why Muslims might be unpopular since 7/10, I’ll stick my neck out and answer that: Because I think a lot of people have just had enough. It took things to a new level of depravity. Just in Europe alone, there had already been a series of attacks that require their own Wikipedia page:
You appear to confuse Islamism with Islam, two very different things. You are actually falling for the islamists' trap. I suggest you read on the subject.

I can say it’s not enough. I’ve reported several times and not all get deleted.
