The EU has announced it will reinstate funding to UNRWA after having suspended it due to Israels allegations (for which they provided zero evidence)

https://twitter.com/SaulStaniforth/status/1763574947727773873

Just heard an interview on Irish news with UNWRA they are relieved funding as been reinstated but extremely concerned about the situation. They said they have not been in Rafah for 5 weeks and know the situation is desperate. Absolute disgrace funding was stalled shame on those that did and Israel has once again proved their genocidal intent disgusting.

Pakistan and Syria are criticising Israel, almost as good as Iran representing women at the UN and Russia and China on the human rights council.

Monty Pythonesque almost.

Monty Pythonesque almost.

Because those countries that are defending Israel are guilt free about everything

Was the bloke that started of his speech by pretending that Hamas broke a 2 year ceasefire not the satire bit of that video? Given that there was clearly no ceasefire prior to 7/10 for Palestinians.

racoonsinbins · 02/03/2024 23:32

@quantumbutterfly i completely agree there was no ceasefire in place before 7/10 and that every death in this ongoing conflict is a tragedy. However, if we were to list the Palestinian deaths in the same period the list would be unfeasibly long - 200 in 2023 prior to 7/10 alone -all equally important and worthy of remembrance by name.

However?

The UNRWA employees were tortured to falsely confess to links with Hamas.

Same thing could be said about IDF… and IDF has still failed to provide the proof of their accusations 2 months after

to unblock the aid, UNRWA had agreed to “allow controls, independent audits, to strengthen internal supervision and extra controls of personnel.”

Sounds fair.

10UsernamesNotAvailableTryAnotherOne · 09/03/2024 10:35

No, says the victims of Israeli torture. Did you read the article? These people had the injuries to prove it. Also, more and more countries are resuming funding due to lack of evidence for Israel's accusations.

It's good to see they are taking some steps to address the concerns. I believe there is another report to come out soon which will provide further details

Just in case you didn’t follow the link
This article is from Reuters which is considered a credible source.
The report was compiled by UNWRA so it was investigating itself so potential for being less than objective in that respect.
However UNWRA will be passing on the report to external agencies specialising in human rights abuses.
They have eye witness accounts that tally with eye witness accounts gathered by other sources. Reuters also intimates that UNWRA have forensic evidence of physical assault.
The UNWRA report is not in itself in the public domain but UNWRA seems to have a portfolio of fairly robust evidence to support their claims of “had experienced included severe physical beatings, waterboarding, and threats of harm to family members.”
Furthermore, we see today that the President of Ireland, who has top level access, has issued a statement that includes the following
” The releasing of a propaganda campaign against the United Nations is a scandalous travesty against the little less than heroic efforts of all those involved on the frontline in Gaza - medical staff, those working to supply nutrition and aid in the most trying of circumstances, and those other dedicated professionals in UNRWA who have lost more than 160 of their colleagues."

Michael D always doing Ireland proud 👏 It's way past time that world leaders call it like it is.

The accusations against Israel about abuses of UN staff needs to be front page news just like Israels 'UNWRA are terrorists' was. If these accusations are true and why should world leaders doubt them when 'UNWRA are terrorists' was accepted without question then they should be asking Israel serious questions and pulling their funding. Torturing UN staff is beyond despicable and absolutely inexcusable.

Silence1 · 11/03/2024 20:05

There are Israeli tech companies who have spread dis-information before in deliberate paid for campaigns to discredit various charities. I have shared links a while back. So that creates a problem of trust in the Israeli Govt, above and beyond existing mis-trust/scepticism.

Agreed. The double standards are obvious.

Israel admits: Biden's Gaza seaport has been Netanyahu's idea all along

And it's part of Israel's plans to dismant & replace UNRWA as well as permanently cut Gaza off from Israel, the West Bank & the world & contain international outrage against Israel's war & starvation of Gaza

What's your opinion on it? You often post links to things without any comment of your own on it. It's like making a statement about something within a group of people and just walking away

EasterIssland · 13/03/2024 16:50

Thanks. I couldn’t read the Reuters link as behind needing to login. But found this one instead

But any new funding would need the support of at least some Republicans, who hold a majority in the House of Representatives. Many have expressed their opposition to UNRWA.
Washington has been looking at working with humanitarian partners on the ground, such as UNICEF and the World Food Program, to continue providing aid.

On their defence I do it as well. Sotmimes I might not have an opinion but I think it’s related with a thread so thought others might have
