I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

Starmer seems to be against an assault on Rafah and is calling for a ceasefire now. This seems like a radical change for him, I wonder why he is saying this now, but better late than never I suppose.

There is a vote this Wednesday. Let’s see what he votes and if votes in favour of a ceasefire and if he doesn’t threaten kick out those in his party that vote in favour of it. The last one in nov broke the party …

I feel like this is giving me too much hope he might actually vote for a ceasefire. I know it most likely will not change much globally.

stormy4319trevor · 18/02/2024 17:50

I hope he does. I might even consider voting Labour. It may not make much difference now, but it might restore faith in Labour as having some kind of morality and mind of their own. I'm a bit worried that he may come out with prevarications like he wants a ceasefire, but only when the time is right though.

So Starmer calls for a ceasefire after checking the wind the wind, and following the intervention of Micky Mouse?
Weren't some labour politicos condemned/disciplined for calling for a ceasefire?
What happens to them?

stormy4319trevor · 20/02/2024 15:26

@EasterIssland I'm not sure. Their amendment states Israel can not be expected to stop fighting if Hamas is still threatening violence, and that the Israeli public have the right to be sure something like Oct 7th will never happen again. At a guess, Labour is calling for a ceasefire contingent on the elimination of any threat from Hamas?

So if I understand you right , they’re are happy of Israel to continue killing Palestinians ? They’d only want a ceasefire if that meant that Hamas would not exist anymore ?

@EasterIssland I'm not sure, will com back with more info if I can get any clearer idea.

EasterIssland · 20/02/2024 19:47

In my opinion they’re hypocrites. A bit late their request … and only when polls have started showing that some communities aren’t happy with their position. If he hadn’t threatened to kick out politicians from the shadow cabinet that said yes in the last voting then I’d trust his intentions. He doesn’t care about Palestine

OP posts:
stormy4319trevor · 20/02/2024 19:55

@EasterIssland I think the Labour amendment is stating that there should be a ceasefire, but only if those 2 conditions are met. So, if the Israeli public feel assured Oct 7th will never happen again, and if there is no threat of violence from Hamas, there should be a ceasefire. Fine in principle, but difficult to say exactly when the Israeli government will feel satisfied those conditions are met.

So it’s ok to continue killing Palestinians in the meantime 🤔 yeah not convinced by their amendment .

How can anyone argue that Palestinians are not being collectively punished.

I hope that all the decent MPs out there vote for the SNP motion and aren’t persuaded to vote for the Labour amendment, now we know more details it appears to be completely useless.

I’m not sure I can support Labour anymore.

Scirocco · 20/02/2024 23:09

@PeasfullPerson if you're in Scotland, vote SNP!

EasterIssland · 21/02/2024 06:19

Just read any labour mp in favour of SNPs request today will be sacked 🤔 thought starmer was in favour of ceasefire.

I hope people vote anyway. They can always sit with the SNP. There used to be debates about fielding candidates south of the border.

am not on twatter - what I can see of that seems to refer to a report by Robert Peston.
Do you (or anyone else) have a link to it by any chance?
If true I truly despair of Starmer.
I did see Lammy outlining Labour's new stance the other day - speaking - ever......... so............ slowly - gave me the impression that he thought this might make him sound authoratative. Of course it could have been because he hoped to stretch his slot beyond the point where he could be asked questions - or because he was speaking with a gun to his head.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/02/2024 10:05

I see Labour is still so bitter over the SNP destroying their hegemony in Scotland that they'll happily sit by and watch a genocide rather than vote for an SNP motion.

What a disgrace.

@Offwiththecircus he reminded me of a poem I read when I was young:

"I... am... in... the... slow... readers... group..."

If that’s correct then bloody hell

EasterIssland · 21/02/2024 16:30
  1. MPs are debating a motion in Parliament put forward by the Scottish National Party (SNP) calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza
  2. House Speaker Lindsay Hoyle chose both the government and the Labour Party's amendments to the motion, breaking precedent on not selecting opposition amendments
  3. Labour's amendment calls for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” while a separate government amendment calls for an “immediate humanitarian pause”

I’m sure those involved overseas will await the exact wording voted on by MPs here along party lines

It’s a bit of a farce at this point, what does it actually do?

I didn't imagine his curious delivery then.

It's 'The Brexit Show: Series 2'.

If it weren't about people's lives, then it might be funny. As it is, they should be ashamed of themselves.

EasterIssland · 21/02/2024 21:15

labours request has been approved

the speaker has saved starmer today from what could have been a disaster for labour.
