Imagine what would happen if more people did this. The power crazed rich politicians would have to fight their own wars. Hats off to this young man and here's hoping more follow suit.

I totally agree. And if those in Hamas shared it there would be peace. And I'm very serious about that comment. I deplore what is happening in Gaza. But it's all bigger than sycophantic posts on MN, thousands of miles from any of it. Easy to know the solution when you have no part in it, and are sitting on a sofa many miles away.

I have no idea. I don't think anyone does. The situation is extremely bad and dangerous, that is for sure.

But I can guarantee that Israel laying down its arms will not result in peace, as suggested by the poster I quoted above. Hamas have already said this, clearly and publicly.

There are other types of national service I believe, medical for instance.
There are other ways to serve. Who was that man that hacksaw ridge was based on? He was a brave man.
In ww2 some men were conscripted to mines, prison seems an easy option compared to that.

This! I just don't understand how much clearer Hamas have to be. They have said again and again they will repeat October 7th. Their backers are Iran who state clearly, again and again that they wish to destroy Israel & all Jews. I deplore this war but the idea that Israel putting down arms would lead to peace is nuts - unless accompanied by some way of restraining Hamas, and Iran. I havent yet seen a single person shouting 'ceasefire now' explain how this will be achieved.

Yes Hamas said they will repeat attacking but i honestly don’t think that’s achievable , things definitely won’t go back to pre Oct 7.
there is the proposal that other Arab countries will oversee Gaza. Plus I think Isreal will take extra precautions , a lot of intel was ignored prior to Oct 7.
I hope there is peace , these people <on both sides> deserve to go back to living normal lives .

Amazing young man. He's obviously going to come in for a lot of criticism from all directions and he knows it, yet still he's prepared to stand by his principles. I've a great deal of respect for him.

You need to go back to what hamas said when they first came into power. They made their aims very clear then
