Israel/Hamas War - Ceasefire

Each Saturday we are seeing demonstrations in London where people are marching with placards and calling for a ceasefire in the Hamas/Israel war.

However, it is difficult to know how the supporters of Palestine think this can be achieved? (Interestingly, no calls for Hamas to cease hostilities and return the hostages were heard - so is this really a call for unilateral disarmament?)

And who should Israel negotiate a ceasefire with? Hamas, ISIS, ISSP, The Muslim Brotherhood - all of these groups/any of these groups?

What is it the supporters of Palestine actually want?

@Fussandmisery "I may be wrong but I think the pro Israel camp would tolerate criticism of Israel’s leaders if they could be convinced there is no hostility to the Jewish population as a whole"

I would agree with you, but as anti-semitic attacks/incidents have soared since that attacks on 7th Oct, I don't think that will happen.

This. Which implies that people incorrectly blame British Jewish people!

It implies that Britain has authority over Netanyahu and his government, it doesn't.

Unless marches disown Hamas and terrorism as well as calling for hostage release and the end of Idf action in the west bank, ceasefire in Gaza then I'm not convinced they are truly after peace for all.

Britain and other western governments bloody sell these weapons that Israel are using to obliterate all Gaza, the whole country should be protesting. It’s all down to racism as to why this is acceptable.

Britain doesn't sell weapons to Israel. Its a myth. Oft repeated on here.

Reported that ceasefire talks have stopped for now

Parkingt111 · 13/07/2024 21:19

CAIRO, Egypt — Gaza hostage-truce talks have been halted after three days of intense negotiations failed to produce a viable outcome, two Egyptian security sources say, blaming Israel for lacking a genuine intent to reach an agreement.

blaming Israel for lacking a genuine intent to reach an agreement

ill leave that there

Parkingt111 · 13/07/2024 21:22

I think it's glaringly obvious at this stage that Netanyahu does not want a ceasefire.

Never has. Neither his aim has been to recover the hostages.

According to Oxfam
”Does the UK sell arms to Israel? Yes.

UK arms sales to Israel since 2015 are to the value of at least £489mworth of military exports to Israel.
That includes parts for combat aircrafts, missiles, tanks, technology, small arms and ammunition.
Parts made across the UK have been sold to Israel, and are being used right now in the appalling attacks on Gaza.

Over 100 new licences allowing UK companies to sell arms to Israel were issued by the UK government between October 2023 and May 2024. By continuing to sell arms the UK is complicit in the killing of civilians in Gaza.”

But according to David Cameron , British exports comprise less than 1% of their total.

So it looks like British arm that are meant for self defence of Israel are being used to hammer Gaza in a frenzy of revenge killing to bolster Netanyahu’s last gasp political career.

Need to stop those arms exports. Israel is using them to ethnically cleanse Gaza in an un-winnable guerilla war .

headstone · 13/07/2024 21:45

I just want Britain to do the right thing and stop being complicit in this genocide. I’d be happy with neutrality like Ireland tbh. Of course it would be painful diplomatically and would require immense courage from our politicians.

EasterIssland · 13/07/2024 21:47

Also this is an interesting thing. Now that he’s the foreign minister he can answer his own question and do the right thing.

This is exactly what Haaretz reported has been consistently going on and I created a thread about yesterday. The systematic foiling of any deal.

How Netanyahu systematically foiled the negotiations to free the hostages www.mumsnet.com/Talk/conflict-in-the-middle-east/5117927-how-netanyahu-systematically-foiled-the-negotiations-to-free-the-hostages

I so hope this can happen. Hostages home and withdrawal. 🙏

Parkingt111 · 15/07/2024 18:58

David Lammy was in Israel today where he was pushing for a ceasefire, an immediate release of hostages and expressed his frustration at the lack of British aid trucks that were being allowed in to Gaza by Israel.

Trump's vice-president pick JD Vance joked UK could be 'first Islamist country to have nuclear weapons' under Labour

https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/jd-vance-uk-islamist-nuclear-weapons-labour/

Being an islamist country us not viewed positively due to so many problems in countries where Islam is the predomiment religion and extremists have a big say eg Iran, Afghanistan, Yeman, etc. Its sad but its true that some countries aren't great places for all people. People might not like it, but its true.

I'm not sure what that has to do with what Vance is (incorrectly) claiming about the UK?

He's claiming the UK will probably be the first islamist country with nuclear weapons. Of course he's wrong. However, seeing islamist extreme countries feeds a fear that the UK could end up like that. Much of Europe is seeing an increase in fear and hate due to fear of extremists. Lack of knowledge, integration and lack of understanding difference leads to fear etc.

Scirocco · 16/07/2024 21:13

The UK is far closer to being a far-right country than it is to being run by Islamist extremists. I don't think Vance has much to worry about there.

PeasfullPerson · 17/07/2024 12:05

I don’t think there is any religion that hasn’t been used as a tool to control and abuse people @Kriscross Are you sure it’s Islam that is the main issue with these countries? Apologies if that’s not what you’re implying, also I’m not dismissing it as a factor.

Vance’s comment is ridiculous. It reeks of Islamophobia and scare mongering, he sounds like a bully.
