That is terrible @parking. What a truly awful thing to inflict on people who have suffered so much. I see now there have already been strikes on Rafah, so I don't know what's happening with the evacuation plan. I can not believe this is being done to wounded, sick, traumatised people, children and the elderly.

Efacsen · 14/02/2024 14:38

Here it is

'There is sometimes even no space to walk' in Rafah, says MSF project coordinator in Gaza

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have shared an audio update from its project coordinator, Lisa Macheiner, in Gaza describing the unfolding situation in Rafah.
She said:

We do see people start to move, to take the little belongings they have left to try to get to a safer place. They don’t know any more what to do and they just feel unsafe and terrified about what is going to happen next. ‘Where is it safe?’, ‘where should we go?’ – and there is no answer to that and it really leads to a feeling of despair.”

“It’s quite sad to see how empty people’s eyes are despite all the resilience that people have here,” said Macheiner. She described the attacks she had witnessed in Rafah:

There have been attacks here in Rafah yesterday [11 February] and also during the night. From Khan Younis, we could hear a lot of heavy explosions. Our windows and doors were shaking throughout the whole night. It was very, very noisy. People don’t feel safe. Children are terrified. They are distressed and it’s been going on for months now and people are exhausted

.”She said there are “hundreds of thousands of people everywhere” and that there is “no space any more”. “There is no space to move in a car. There is sometimes even no space to walk,” she added.

@stormy4319trevor The UNSC are meeting today to discuss the situation in the middle east. Sky is reporting its after the secretary General warned of the slaughter in Gaza that could take place with the planned military attack on Rafah.
I don't know if it will make any difference at this point

stormy4319trevor · 14/02/2024 14:51

Thanks @Parkingt111 Any idea what time they are meeting? May watch some of it, no worries if you don't know. If strikes continue on Rafah with no viable evacuation plan in place, it must be the last straw. You'd think.

Parkingt111 · 14/02/2024 15:12

@stormy4319trevor sky news reports say around 3pm this afternoon
So that would be around now I think if it's GMT time

stormy4319trevor · 14/02/2024 15:17

Thanks @parking, yes it's on youtube.

Balamsass · 14/02/2024 15:32

The permanent Members of UNSC are

China
France
Russia
UK
US

you have to be fucking kidding me?

China has a human rights problem as long as your arm - remember Tianaman Square?

And Russia has invaded Ukraine (another sovereign nation) and is still engaged in a war.

And these people think they can sit in judgement on Middle East issues?

Bonkers, totally bonkers !

stormy4319trevor · 14/02/2024 15:40

@Balamsass The 5 were the allies who won the second world war, after which the UN was set up to avoid similar catastrophes. I think there are issues, not least that 5 countries can veto, which does not seem democratic. However, the structure of the UN is a consequence of WW2, the allied relationships and their victory in that war.

Kindatired · 14/02/2024 16:12

So the prime ministers of Ireland and Spain have written to the President of the European Commission asking for an urgent review of Israel’s compliance with its human rights obligations under the EU Israeli association agreement ( trade deal). Unfortunately sanctions would need agreement of all the member states, but if enough momentum builds up, even with the huge reserves of its central bank the currency could come under pressure.

Exactly as I said, the whole set-up is no longer fit for purpose.

Some of those members don't exactly have 'clean hands'

So what gives then the right to sit in judgement on others ?

So who gives 2 flying fucks what they say?

It isn't going to influence anything.

Hopefully one by one the ue members start changing their mind. Doing nothing will solve less than if 2 countries start making noise about not being happy with EUs position about Israel

You are micturating into a very strong breeze.

The EU are quite definite on their position

As the EU stands by its position to support Israel, a slew of statements from European governing bodies — including the European Council — emphasize Israel's “right to defend itself in line with international law and international humanitarian law” and demand that “Hamas release all hostages without any precondition.”

eu is form by various countries. Some of them are starting to raise (in their own countries and within eu) that Israel is not defending its right to exist in line with international law and international humanitarian law.

not sure why you are bringing Hamas into this when myself and other posters haven’t mentioned it.

whilst Israel might continue getting support from eu itself , it’s losing support (and respect) by many eu members.

Kindatired · 14/02/2024 17:31

@Balamsass Well Josep Borrell has said that a solution has to be imposed and no EU state will want to be dropping bombs on Tel Aviv.
So sanctions are the obvious non violent way forward
Even with the huge reserves of its central bank, a wobbly currency does make the governments think about how they are going to pay for the next lot of weapons.
The suggestion seems to have drawn quite a strong emotional response from yourself, a simple poster on mumsnet like my good self so that speaks for itself

Snowypeak · 14/02/2024 17:36

Why such anger that some EU countries don’t want to see Rafah bombed and thousands more killed?

That's a direct quote from the EU - I didn't make it up.

Please try and keep up.

So who gives 2 flying bollocks about that guy's opinion?

What authority does he have to tell a sovereign nation how to prosecute a war?

Or tell other sovereign nations what to do about another nation's foreign policy?

Israel isn't in the EU.

EU needs to butt out.

Thanks goodness we (UK) aren't Members anymore otherwise they would continue to stick their beak into our affairs.

???

Snowypeak · 14/02/2024 18:27

Personally I don’t know for how much longer we can all sit and watch those people in Rafah wait to die. Egypt for one is growing more and more unhappy.

Snowypeak · 14/02/2024 18:33

Well that’s what the EU is discussing amongst themselves. But you seem very angry that they would try to interfere.
