Why isn't aid able to flow through the Egyptian border?

This aid is being withheld at an Israeli port - not in Egypt

Plus right wing demonstrators are preventing passage of aid at Egypt-Gaza border

Parkingt111 · 10/02/2024 16:14

@Efacsen I think the US must know. I was thinking in the last visit that Blinkens comments were unusually more critical than usual and blocking of aid was specifically mentioned.
I wonder if any ultimatums were given although even if there was it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

It was awful to read about babies not having access to baby formula in Gaza.

Efacsen · 10/02/2024 16:26

@Parkingt111 maybe the US knew sooner - but now being widely reported after UNWRAs tweet this afternoon

Also read something somewhere about Biden's 'patience with Netanyahu running out'

But seems to make no difference whatsoever

More not good news

Egypt is threatening to suspend its peace treaty with Israel if Israeli troops are sent into Rafah, and says fighting there could force the closure of the territory’s main aid supply route, according to Associated Press.

The threat to suspend the Camp David Accords, a cornerstone of regional stability for nearly a half-century, came after Benjamin Netanyahu said sending troops into Rafah was necessary to win the four-month-old war against Hamas.

I think Egypt are just trying to ensure no one tries to come through.

@Efacsen just seen this update on sky regarding Israels blockade of turkeys aid shipment. Doesn't mention anything else though whether it will be sent back or allowed in

Turkey says it is in contact with Israeli authorities over a blocked aid shipment at an Israeli port.
The shipment from Turkey includes more than 1,000 containers of supplies including flour, chickpeas, sugar and cooking oil to cover the needs of 1.1 million people for a month.
A UN agency yesterday said it was blocked at the port.

I believe I saw info about this ship yesterday. The company in charge of disembarking the aid is refusing to because it’s meant to be for urnwa

More defined comments coming from Biden about what Israel (IDF and government) needs to do before sending troops into Rafah. As a family man, I do think he is genuinely concerned about civilians dying despite wanting to hold Israel “close”.

He also has an election coming up in which democrats have not been happy about way he has handled the war.

I wonder if this will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back when it also comes to how ICJ views Israel’s protection of innocent civilians- particularly as they may also receive backing of western leaders.

Biden warns Netanyahu against Rafah operation without ‘credible’ safety plan

UN officials and Biden have said an offensive in city, where about 1.3 million Palestinians are sheltering, would lead to a ‘bloodbath’

More like he’s trading the tight rope of an election year vs complicity in war crimes.
Evacuation of civilians is only legal if there are satisfactory conditions of hygiene, health, safety and nutrition in the evacuation zone and there is a particular category of war crime called “treacherously killing or wounding “ when people are told they can evacuate to a safe place and are then killed or wounded when they get there. Starvation in this context is both a crime against humanity and a war crime.

Polka83 · 12/02/2024 23:35

Looks like the Appeals Court is also worried about Israel committing war crimes and has rules Netherlands cannot export parts of fighter planes to Israel or it would also be complicit in war crimes.
A court in U.S. was also worried about war crimes being undertaken by the IDF, but decision to sell arms to them was a political one!

I believe talks for a deal are resuming today in Egypt. That's the only positive thing that we can hold on to for some hope at the moment.

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 08:57

@EasterIssland with all due respect that article is very much 'we might' or ' we could'

Don't think it says anything we don't already know.

Parkingt111 · 13/02/2024 09:13

All wars have rules and the laws applicable to conflict cannot be interpreted so as to render them hollow or devoid of meaning. This has been my consistent message, including from Ramallah last year,” he wrote.
“Since that time, I have not seen any discernible change in conduct by Israel. As I have repeatedly emphasised, those who do not comply with the law should not complain later when my Office takes action pursuant to its mandate.”

it does show something new. And that Is that since the statement made in December 2023 which criticises Israel's conduct in this war, nothing has changed and those same criticisms still stand today. He doesn't see any improvement in their conduct to adhere to the laws of war.

Biden really talking up the new negotiations

As of yesterday Israel wasn't committing to send a negotiator - hope that changes

Parkingt111 · 13/02/2024 09:20

@Efacsen
This was reported today in the times of Israel:
Following US pressure, Israel will reportedly also be sending a delegation to Cairo, which includes Mossad chief David Barnea and Shin Bet director Ronen Bar

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 09:21

@Parkingt111 I wasn't being facetious I don't disagree with that.

I think we Can all agree nothing has really changed.

Efacsen · 13/02/2024 09:21

@Parkingt111 that's excellent news

Parkingt111 · 13/02/2024 09:24

It seems Biden has high hopes that there will be a breakthrough in the latest round of negotiations.
I really do hope so for the sake of everyone involved. From what I have read it is being pushed for both sides to accept a 6 week truce where fighting will pause, for the safe release of hostages and vast increase of aid as the main points.
And then during the 6 weeks, work on a full ceasefire to be implemented

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 09:38

@Parkingt111 that would be an amazing thing.

Hope so too especially teetering on the edge of a land invasion of Rafah

Efacsen · 13/02/2024 13:06

The main reason I'm posting this is to highlight that no evacuation plans have been received despite it now being several days since Netanyahu said he would do so

UN would not cooperate with any forced Rafah evacuation

The UN humanitarian office has not received any communication from Israel of a plan to evacuate Gaza's Rafah area either alone or jointly and would not participate in any forced evacuation even if it did, a spokesperson told Reuters on Tuesday.
