Conflict in the Middle East

To ask why the only countries that didn't vote for a ceasefire were USA and UK?

stillholly · 09/12/2023 23:12

All other countries in the UN voted for a ceasefire.

USA put their hand up and voted against a ceasefire.

UK abstained from voting.

Can anyone explain to me their reasoning for not voting for a ceasefire?

Really? You don't follow the news then?

Fifthtimelucky · 09/12/2023 23:34

My understanding is that the UK refused to vote for the resolution because it didn't condemn the Hamas attacks of 7 October.

The USA vetoed it because they want Israel to have longer to "dismantle" Hamas before a ceasefire comes into effect.

jemenfous37 · 10/12/2023 06:50

Who do you think supplies the majority of ordinance to the warring countries of the world?

The US is and always has been in Israels pocket. Brown nosing United, there

The UK can't think for itself and HAS to be onside with the US

Both countries disgust me with the way they have voted

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:13

The US has always voted in its own interest
War has always been in its own interest
Brown people are expendable and collateral damage, even when under 5
None of this is surprising after the war on Iraq. And the UK has always gone along with it,

HowVeryBizarre · 10/12/2023 07:19

I am absolutely horrified and disgusted at the anti semitism that has reared its ugly head again. Hamas knew what they were starting and cheerfully went ahead knowingly sacrificing their people. Now Israel are the bad guys! It is such a shame that so many people are so ignorant of history. Nobody wants any civilian population to suffer but ignoring the Hamas atrocities to jump on the “Palestinians are the victims” bandwagon is shameful. Having heard a livestream of an Israeli family before Hamas broke into their safe room and massacred their family I will never ever be anything other than pro Israeli.

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:21

Nope, speaking against collective punishment for the Palestinians- 20,000 dead now, is it?- is not anti-semitism. I have no problem saying Hamas are barbarians, but this white savourism by the US is appalling.

NonanteNeuf · 10/12/2023 07:27

@HowVeryBizarre Being anti Israel is not anti semitic. It’s anti genocide and anti war crimes by a country who are ethnically cleansing an entire region. Screaming anti semitism is like the TRAs screaming “no debate”, making people afraid to speak out.

It’s like if Britain has started a war in Northern Ireland and killed all of republican people even if they weren’t members of the IRA. It’s genocide.

Genocide Joe is looking after the USAs financial and political interests. Fuck the actual people who are innocent in all this.

Mumof2teens79 · 10/12/2023 07:29

And here in lies the issue
Unfortunately you can't express any sympathy for Palestinians without someone claiming anti-semitism.

It is possible to be critical of Israel...and not be anti-semitic.
It's also possible to be a full supporter of Israel, anti-hamas, and still want a ceasefire.

I have no time for anyone who doesn't condemn the atrocities committed both by Hamas and the Israeli government. There are too many people trying to justify the violence on both sides. Regardless of politics and history, there can never be a justification for what was done by Hamas on 7th October. There is no justification for what Israel has done to Palestinian civilians since. Pure evil, all of it.

The 10s of thousands of Palestinian children and infants who are being slaughtered are not Hamas. If you have no compassion for them, you are not human.

Condemning the violence and war crimes currently being committed by Israel is not antisemitism.

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:36

The UN is such a sham. I always knew this, but it's really been hammered home now. The US will always veto any measure that harms its widespread interests, be it Genocide Joe or Genocide Trump.

TokyoSushi · 10/12/2023 07:38

Arms.

I suppose the issue with a ceasefire, is that it almost suspends things as they are. Thousands upon thousands of people have died, but Hamas are still there. A ceasefire would be a bit like a pause, things could be rebuilt, aid could go in etc, but at some stage, somebody could hit the 'un-pause' button and we'd be back to square one.

Now, I absolutely don't think that the current way is the right way at all (you can see that from my many posts on the subject!) the killing of innocent civilians is so pointless and abhorrent. It pretty much is genocide in real time, but I can also see the issue with a ceasefire, but I agree that this definitely needs to stop, I just don't know how.

jesterdourt · 10/12/2023 07:40

None of this is surprising after the war on Iraq.

This is what surprises me, have people forgotten about the War on Terror. The US would be hypocritical to vote for a ceasefire.

Warmongers simple as that

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:42

@TokyoSushi there may well be issues with a ceasefire, but the slaughter of children now is so horrifying that I really think there is no other option.

flowerchild2000 · 10/12/2023 07:43

@Sususudio didn't mean to quote you but nevertheless I totally agree w/you

jesterdourt · 10/12/2023 07:47

It’s like if Britain has started a war in Northern Ireland and killed all of republican people even if they weren’t members of the IRA. It’s genocide.

People in NI are British citizens too though & innocent people did die & many did have the prejudice that an Irish accent = IRA. Some argue the potato famine was a genocide.

USA are warmongers and arms suppliers.
UK are pathetic and follow.

Nothing stays the same forever.
The power base in the world will switch, matter of time.

Lantyslee · 10/12/2023 07:49

The US is a vassal state of Israel and the UK hasn't got the cojones not to upset the US.

Do you think it will be better or worse?

The above is true & the US is not alone in that.

Nothing stays the same forever
The power base in the world will switch, matter of time.

So when the power base does switches will people here want the help of the US or will they be happy to accept the switch to the status quo?

Really? You don't follow the news then?

I saw this on the news and have gathered some information from the news but I just don't understand how the whole world is calling for a ceasefire except these two countries.

It’s this kind of stupidity I can’t be doing with.

Low grade TikTok conspiracy level anti-Americanism. It’s such a privileged kind of snark. The Americans do not need Israel’s money at an actual cost geopolitical stability (which is worth many $$¥$$¥$ more).

Also, FYI, NATO is trying to preserve its ordinance not use it.

Do you not either? Is that why you can’t give an answer without snark?

Thanks for asking this OP. I have an idea but always good to read other views.
