Will their British citizenship be revoked? Here is Tamara being glorified in the DM while the likes of Shamima Begum was crucified.

What's the difference between what either of them did because I can't see any and neither should be allowed back.

If she was a Palestinian going back to fight for Hamas would you still call her a terriost?

So many double standards

Lol, obviously because Hamas are terrorists!!!

Alohapotato · 03/12/2023 11:56

@admin
@mumsnet
Please ban this person who defend terrorists and minimise what they did/do .

I think it's shocking that conscription still exists anywhere and that someone barely out their teens would think that going to war was a dream come true. What a depressing world we live in.

The leaders of 'the other side' are Hamas who wish to commit genocide by killing ALL Jews. They want all Jewish women and children dead. This makes it very difficult to find a solution unfortunately.
I agree that the majority of Palestinian people are in the middle of this awful conflict, not just because they have been killed by the Israeli army but because their own leaders in Hamas have taken millions of their aid to build themselves lives of luxury, their water pipes to build rockets etc while a massive percentage of the people struggle to live.
Just calling the Israeli people and army the baddies won't help and I'm so tired of reading people's posts condemning Israel and how awful they are whilst coming up with no solutions or condemning Hamas for openly wanting Genocide.

Excellent post.

Terrorism does not just mean "civilian deaths" and if you think that's all it means, I hope you never actually encounter it in your life because you will find out the difference.

Just when you think you've seen it all..
Shocking.

If you have Israeli joint nationality you have to do national service. It's the same in many countries still, we are actually more unusual in not having any form of national service. Dual nationality doesn't get you out of it. Whether I agree with Israel or the actions of the idf are separate (I don't) but you can't revoke her citizenship for doing something legally required

Indeed.

Often football players take time out if playing to go back to their country to dontheir national service.

SideBob · 03/12/2023 12:19

With the upmost respect op:

If you genuinely can't see the difference between ISIS and the Israeli forces, you should not even have access to the internet. That's not to say you we shouldn't criticise IDF but the premise of this thread is ___.

Depdawg · 03/12/2023 12:23

Is anyone else feeling really uncomfortable with this sort of
potection of terrorists? It seems
to be getting more desperate, just
to hate on Israel. Hate on them by
all means but fgs be logical and stop
justifying terrorists' behaviour.

MonkeyHarold · 03/12/2023 12:24

@PurpleChrayne Yes! Am Yisrael chai. And the only reason for that is that we have each others backs. Just as well.

itsmyp4rty · 03/12/2023 12:34

I also think it's horrendous to justify killing civilians by saying 'but it happened in wars 150 years ago'. We had slaves 150 years ago, didn't mean it was ok.

Neither side seem to be able to see any of their own faults and that is why these things go on from generation to generation to generation. So sad for the kids who are brought up thinking this is normal.

This, exactly. It's awful that someone is excited to be in the military when you see what has happened and continues to happen in Gaza. With this sort of appetite for war, it'll keep going on as it has done for decades now. Neither Hamas nor the Israeli government seem willing to try to get a permanent ceasefire in place.

Its not fucking genocide. To even use that word in relation to Jewish people defending themselves is so fucking anti Semitic.

Nonsense

This makes very little sense, but it does explain a lot about the alternate reality a lot people on this thread live in where facts and logical argument are, shall we say, flexible. When someone says at least twice that in the past civilians never got killed in wars its not the equivalent of exaggerating your level of hunger using a known turn of phrase.

This is probably the first modern conflict where we are through social media are seeing what widespread bombing of densely inhabited cities looks like and in real time and it is uniquely ugly and horrific and one that states operating armies would rather we didn't see,but see it we do and the same tools allow a sort of democratic pushback to these horrors. This window of truth won't last long before they wrest back control to the establishment so that they can shape and control the narrative to their will. In this respect X at least for me has been a force for good amongst the toxic dross.

@basculin - so you are happy for Brits to go to Israel and fight as part of the IdF? You don't see any problem with them going and then coming back and getting on with life?

You are so intent on being right that you ignore the fact that she didn't go over there to fight. She's lived there for 15 years and she has to do national service

This thread is a reality/fact free zone. And very weird. I mean does this person really believe that soldiers don't have the right to 'get on with life' after they have finished their tour of duty. Or is it only people that fight for Israel?

I agree. But the young are impulsive and have little life experience. They probably don't have children, yet, which does change one's perspective on life. Having children often increases compassion for children and makes people yearn for peace for their children's future. Not always, but often. I blame the (mostly) old men who send kids to war with promises of glory, instead of talking peace.

backtowinter · 03/12/2023 14:03

OP, this is disgusting

To compare the two is disgusting.

Nothing else to add

I tend to find if you have to use fiction as a pointing mechanism for your argument then perhaps its not a great argument.

thelonemommabear · 03/12/2023 14:09

@cheshirecatssmile

YES because Hamas is a terrorist organisation pretty stupid to pretend otherwise

thankyouforthedayz · 03/12/2023 14:19

From a start I believe Shamima should be allowed back. She was only 15 and although ludicrously in this country children of 10 are responsible for their actions and will be potentially tried for criminal acts (which rightly joining ISIS, a proscribed terrorist organisation which threatens the UK is). The problem is we have such high evidential standards for criminal justice here she may not be prosecutable, even though there is loads of evidence (the Podcast series). She was a very bright, idealistic young person seeking a better world and didn't have a strong enough moral guidance from the people or institutions around her to resist her friend's persuasion. Saying she was "groomed" devalues the concept of grooming.
I can hear how horrified you are about what is happening to citizens of Gaza, but this (probable) dual national is not joining a conflict that threatens the UK and that's the difference. I personally don't think there is moral equivalence anyway but that's beside the point.

Heart broken Brit men have joined the French Foreign Legion for years. Some people make a living as mercenary soldiers. I knew a fella who fought with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.
This woman may have dual UK/Israeli citizenship - of course she is legally entitled to fight for (one of) her country.
