When I was young in the 60s I worked with a man who had been a soldier at the liberation of Belsen (I think it was Belsen) he said the Germans in the local town said they knew nothing of what had gone on, nothing to do with them. The officer in charge invited the Mayor to visit and bring the town with him, the Mayor declined to an armed escort was sent. Apparently the amount of vomit and tears was phenomenal, a real pity party for the poor Germans witnessing the reality. I don't know if he remembered it accurately, he only talked of it if he had been drinking, I think it was the only way he could cope with the memories.

I wonder if Netanyahu and his cronies could be forced to do the same in Gaza?

Just saw on Twitter that idf have killed several pregnant women in a hospital they’re currently raiding

Was this Al Awda hospital @EasterIssland ? WHO posted yesterday saying that 2 medical staff had been killed there by the IDF

Such an awful time to be pregnant even without this happening

Seems like mortality will increase as SAR breaks down/prevented by intensity of the bombardment/shelling in Khan Younis - the severely injured will die in situ before they are rescued and those actually reaching a hospital will most likely get a tourniquet and piece of gauze for a traumatic amputation [rather than surgical revision and transfusion], and then die

Not surprisingly the safeguarding of civilian lives doesn't seem to be going too well atm

The bombing/shelling is moving down along the Khan Younis road to Rafah which is currently the only place receiving humanitarian aid so............

Some news about Al Shifa - looks like it didn't re-open after all

''In Gaza City in the Strip’s north, an Agence France-Presse journalist said thousands were sheltering in the al-Shifa hospital, which is no longer functioning and partly destroyed following an Israeli raid last month.

Hundreds of makeshift tents fashioned from scraps of fabric and plastic filled the hospital’s courtyards and garden amid collapsed walls.''

@Efacsen the health care infrastructure has more or less broken down. I don't think there is a single hospital working at full capacity
The images showing on MSM of scenes inside the hospitals are difficult to stomach and that's without even looking at social media

Parkingt111 · 10/12/2023 08:46

From Al Aqsa hospital

At least 71 dead and 160 wounded people arrived at al Asqa hospital in the past 24 hours

Efacsen · 10/12/2023 08:52

@Parkingt111 Yes the category 'functioning hospitals' now includes 'partially functioning hospitals' which explains why the number has actually gone up! [13]

And no longer really reflects the actual state of affairs

@Parkingt111 Is this the WHO meeting you mentioned a few days ago?

WHO adopts resolution urging immediate aid for Gaza

Imogen Foulkes
Geneva correspondent

Member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) have passed a resolution calling for immediate medical access to Gaza.

In an unusual move, the WHO’s executive board met in emergency session to discuss what its director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned was a health catastrophe - with many wounded, and high risk of disease.

The resolution calls for immediate unimpeded access for aid, and for those fighting to abide by international law. That means no attacks on hospitals or health workers
It also demands that all those detained – hostages and Palestinians – should have access to medical care
.
The WHO has warned that the terms of the resolution will be virtually impossible to fulfil without a ceasefire, something the United States vetoed at the UN Security Council on Friday.

Earlier Ghebreyesus said "the impact of the conflict on health is catastrophic", adding that "Gaza's health system is on its knees and collapsing".

Do you think it's gone very quiet - has the news cycle moved on? Or is there nothing new to say because it's all dreadful and remains dreadful

Or the calm before the storm

The BBC has closed it's live feed and only 3 posts on the Guardians in 6 hours - AJs been a bit busier

OP posts:
Toothyfruity · 10/12/2023 18:51

Judging from the carnage I saw on the news and on social media today the situation for Palestinians remains catastrophic.

The WHO news you posted is the only new thing today other than the ongoing murder of civilians including children. Seen a fair few dead or severely injured children today. Fucking disgusting.

Parkingt111 · 10/12/2023 19:04

@Efacsen yes that was the meeting thank you for updating
I think as the meeting was announced before the vote for the ceasefire, I'm not sure how much impact it will have now
It has certainly highlighted how dire the situation is but once again it will not be alleviated much without a ceasefire

The resolution calls for immediate unimpeded access for aid, and for those fighting to abide by international law. That means no attacks on hospitals or health workers
It also demands that all those detained – hostages and Palestinians – should have access to medical care

this resolution would be a great start but I am wondering how it can be imposed* *

Parkingt111 · 10/12/2023 19:06

@Toothyfruity that doesn't sound great at all, I havent looked at my social media today but i have in the last few days seen that there is an increasing amount of frustration by those outside of Gaza after the veto of the ceasefire.

Al awda hospital is still under siege
On the 5th day now
There's around 250 people who can't leave and nobody can enter
Supplies are dwindling and they aren't coping anymore

Efacsen · 11/12/2023 05:19

@Parkingt111 seems to be little evidence that hospitals are 'being protected'. A health clinic near the Jabylia refugee camp was also under fire yesterday and then this about Al Ahli

World Health Organization chief Tedros Ghebreyesus announced that the WHO and its partners in Gaza managed to deliver essential trauma and surgical supplies to Gaza’s Al Ahli hospital to cover the needs of 1,500 people, as well as transfer 19 critical patients.

“This was another very high-risk mission in the vicinity of active shelling and artillery fire.

The hospital itself has been substantially damaged, and in acute need of oxygen and essential medical supplies, water, food and fuel. Critically, the hospital needs additional health personnel,” he said.

And now this in Khan Younis

The Palestine Red Crescent Society has posted to social media to state that fighting is taking place close to Al-Amal hospital in Khan Younis, in the south of the Gaza Strip:
It posted:
Today at dawn, occupation aircraft launched several violent raids in the vicinity of Al-Amal hospital, and artillery shelling continued in the city centre and in the northern areas of the association’s headquarters, which houses 13,000 displaced people.

I have seen reports that volunteers are helping in setting up the ground work for the Qatari sponsored field hospital In Rafah
So that is something positive atleast

The prcs put up a tweet about it

Efacsen · 12/12/2023 07:56

@Parkingt111 thanks for the news about the new field hospital in Rafah

I didn't realise until a couple of days ago that more than 90% of UNWRAs staff - doctors nurses teachers engineers etc etc - are now IDP and living in UNWRA shelters until they posted a tweet thanking those who had continued to work despite their own difficult personal circumstances. Not sure why I'd not worked this out for myself

So maybe that goes some way to explaining why the field hospital can be staffed from Al Quuds with the general movement of medical staff southwards and very few remaining in the north

OP posts:
Efacsen · 12/12/2023 08:05

BBC spoke to staff at Al Awda yesterday - Israeli snipers are firing into the hospital and wounded an MSF surgeon there

“Let us be clear: Al-Awda is a functioning hospital with medical staff and many patients in vulnerable condition. Targeting medical workers as they care for their patients is utterly reprehensible, utterly inhumane.”

''MSF also said Al-Awda and other hospitals in the north have sustained substantial damage and supplies are running low, further compromising doctors' capacity to treat their patients

.''

OP posts:
Parkingt111 · 12/12/2023 09:37

No I didn't realise that either.
I'm not sure how long it will take to set up the field hospital especially with the lack of fuel. It didn't give a timeline but I hope its soon as it is desperately needed
I haven't seen any updates of further civilians who have been injured being evacuated out of Gaza either

Efacsen · 12/12/2023 09:53

Seen a few reports of patients going out of Gaza for medical treatment in Egypt, Turkey, UAE, Qatar etc don't think it gets much publicity slow but steady medical evacuations are ongoing of small nos of patients

It's not just the injured either - Turkey is taking 1500 cancer patients for treatment

OP posts:
Thereissomelight · 12/12/2023 09:56

I hope the field Hospital is up and running soon, not just for the patients of course but for all the displaced medical and nursing staff who have lost their hospitals and must be desperately worried about becoming quickly de-skilled unless they can get back in there and do their jobs.

Toothyfruity · 12/12/2023 10:24

Fuck I'm really struggling with some of the images coming out of Gaza today.

I know that this is a pointless post but I am holding back tears at work.

I can't bear to see children blown to bits any more.

Mumsnet is like an alternate universe (I am not in the UK, where I live pretty much understands that what is happening in Gaza is outrageous) at the moment. People squabbling about nonsense on the ME board while children continue to be bombarded and maimed and injured.

There's no justification for it. None.
