I accept she may be correct. But what does that then mean? So the anti-antisemitism march was also a march in support of Palestinians? While I think that sounds good, from my (and i suppose my daughter's) perspective as non-Jewish, non Palestinian, non semitic people by any definition, who are interested in human rights and peace, what does that mean to Jewish people?

Antisemitism is hatred of Jews. The march was organised by the Campaign Against Antisemitism. They know what they were organising. Honestly.

Very odd not to understand why a march against Jew hatred would include mostly people who supported the existence of the world's only homeland for Jews created after the Holocaust. Dobyou not realise that, by the nature of the diaspora most British Jews have connections in Israel?

As I said before, If I carry a Union Jack, does it mean I support the current UK government? Of course not. It wouldn't occur to anyone to think that was the case. There will have been a huge diversity of opinion on politics how Israel should respond to Hamas's declaration of war & brutal attack on civilians etc etc. The march was to show solidarity with Jews in the face of growing antisemitism. Which, I think it did and I was delighted to be a part of it.

Supported the existence of a Jews only homeland at the expense of displacing millions of Palestinians. Does this sit right with anyone??

She's not correct.

Ask her why would someone want to edge Jews out from the (dictionary) definition of antisemitism? How would you describe racism against Jews specifically, which is a thing that needs its own definition, without the word antisemitism?

@SharonEllis I have quoted YOUR post 😵‍💫

angsty · 26/11/2023 23:30

@SharonEllis I belive that, certainly. But my DD launched an impassioned attack on me tonight when I said that antisemitism meant hatred of Jews, telling me this is not true, I am way out of date and that the Palestinians are also semitic and that no-one uses that old definitionof antisemitism now, i need to "wake up". I could not continue the argument/discussion as she became so incensed she had to go to her room.

Thats not what I said, because it isn't true.

My DD (aged 29) has had an ardent argument with me tonight which I am not sure what to make of and was not expecting. We were discussing the anti-antisemitic march. She was very insistent that the word "antisemitic" does not in fact mean anti-Jewish, as the Palestinians are equally as semitic as the Jews. She got very heated about it and accused me of being a "dinosaur" by interpreting the word antisemitism as meaning anti-Jewish, as Palestinians are "also semitic" and everyone now understands this.. I said that as far as i understood the widely understood meaning of the word antisemitism was anti-Jewish. She became quite patronising, telling me that that is an old person's definition and that the widely accepted definition on social media now (ie the up to date definition) was not that that the semitic races include the Palestinians and so "antisemitic" also meant anti-Palestinian. If I would actually go on social media, she said (as opposed to hanging around on Mumsnet and "old people's space" Facebook) I would realise i was completely out if step. I stopped arguing at this point as she got so heated and angry with me for not understanding the current zeitgeist. I don't know how to respond to this, and what she even means by it. Any ideas? I felt seriously angry but can't identify exactly why.

Not really a difficult one. Yes you could apply the term "semitic" to people other than Jews, but the current understanding is that it's a specific form of prejudice, bigotry etc, specifically aimed at people who are Jewish. That is how it's perceived and to most people that is what is understood by the term, a loathing etc. of Jews. That is the nature of language in that a word means what most people think it to mean. At present, common understanding is that it refers to the Hebrews alone. If she doesn't like it she needs to get the popular perception of the word changed and that means more than just her internet informers. If she really doesn't like it, then talk about "Jew-haters" instead as that seems to be a synonym often used.

Girlboymama · 26/11/2023 23:38

Palestinians are Semitic people. All Arabs are Semitic.
Antisemitism in today’s world is prejudice against Jews only though. Which when you think about the definition of the word Semitic makes you think antisemitic should include all Arabs. So in a way your daughter has a point, but she’s incorrect in this think.

angsty · 26/11/2023 23:39

Yes, to be fair to her she did say that she thought the word antisemitism should be retired and anti-Jewish used instead. I said yes, that would probably be the ideal but it isn't what has happened thus far.

Your daughter is wrong. But she's a teenager so is obviously never wrong 🙈

Maybe ask her why she feels it's ok to change the meaning of such an important word without asking those it affects what they think, or how it makes them feel?

I don't know what to tell you though, really. Arabic is also a Semitic language, so Arabs are semites. However, the word antisemite is specifically to do with the hatred of Jews. That's just what it means. What word would she prefer we use for hatred of Jews? And what qualifies her to make that decision?

It sounds like she's spending too much time watching social media hot takes from people with a very dodgy agenda. The dictionary definition is just fine. Ask her if she would normally think it's ok to redefine other people's language for them - this new definition/obfuscation is definitely not coming from Jewish people i.e. those who have experienced antisemitism.

Where do you think these Jews came from?

(Not to mention the fact it was 700 000, not millions)

Europe.

Thats what the DNA shows right? And that’s why most of the folks in Israel are white and not with a darker skin colour as they are from the ‘West’.

BumWad · 26/11/2023 23:49

But thank you for acknowledging the displacement of 700,000 Palestinians @Humdingerydoo

The Mizrahim would like a word…

Pinkpinkpink15 · 26/11/2023 23:54

I wish I had been able to be there today.

I'm not Jewish, but I am disgusted by the rise in anti semitism (traditional old peoples 😂 definition of it!!)

So what about the 900 000 Jews forcibly displaced by various Arab nations around that same time? Where do you think they should have gone? Or have you not learned about that from TikTok yet?

Also, utterly ridiculous thinking all Israelis are white 😂😂😂😂

Please please stop feeding the troll. This is a thread in celebration of a march against prejudice and hatred against a people who have been subject to the most appalling discrimination since time began. Please don’t let this thread be derailed. Just ignore the troll and it will go away.

Thank you,
Yes, I too was wondering when we could return to discussing the marches.

etmoiandme · 27/11/2023 00:01

Yes ignore her - she'll need to go to bed soon anyway for school in the morning.
