You opposed anti-Semitism, yet have no problem telling anti-Semitic jokes. 🤔

Don't start spraying out accusations of anti semitism at someone whose political views you disagree with. It debases, devalues and trivialises the real problem of antisemitism.

parksandrecs · 02/12/2023 18:33

From what I saw the last march against semitism included very large and visible Israeli flags.

So no, I won't be marching.

Would happily march against anti-semitism if no similar flags are allowed.

I also haven't joined any marches where pro-Hamas symbols/flags are allowed.

Very sensible. At last some sanity from a poster ( apart from mine own, of course)

Read onwards from page 2. I have at least a dozen contributions. The first ones questioned the wisdom of people flying Israeli flags at what was ostensibly a march against antisemitism. I won't repeat my arguments, you can go back and read them ( if you can be bothered) but it seem like the French, with their demonstration were not so crass and lacking in awareness as those who marched in London. .

Exactly. It is possible to sand against anot-semitism but not support Israel.

Although allowing people like Marine Le Pen to take part, and be prominent, is very questionable.

Stomacharmeleon · 02/12/2023 18:39

That's ok we all have a choice which marches we attend and ones we choose to not attend. We also have the choice of organising our own if we feel uncomfortable.

parksandrecs · 02/12/2023 18:39

stand against

anti semitism

parksandrecs · 02/12/2023 18:40

I doubt anyone would attend a march I tried to organise! I don't have the connections

Stomacharmeleon · 02/12/2023 18:41

@parksandrecs I agree but perhaps that's needs to be taken up with the French.
I was happy with the one in London. I was happy ' Tommy robinson' was escorted away.

parksandrecs · 02/12/2023 18:41

Yes, completely agree about Tommy Robinson, disgusting person

ChickHenLittle · 02/12/2023 18:42

Tommy Robinson will turn up at any large gathering where he thinks he can cause offence or make a scene. The man is a complete liability.

quiteoldad · 02/12/2023 18:45

The London march got hijacked by the Pro-Israel lobby and as such, what was otherwise a very good message was, debased and devalued by association with a violent state.

Interesting to note that none of the celebs at the march had anything that associated them with Israel.

Stomacharmeleon · 02/12/2023 18:47

@ChickHenLittle @parksandrecs we all agree on that... :)

I couldn't have attended anyway, nowhere near London for a start. However, I wouldn't be comfortable being seen as supporting the actions of the Israeli government. I can't attend marches now anyway, but if I could, I would join one against antisemitism, without the flying of flags. I do not want it to be assumed I support the actions of the Israeli government in any way, shape or form.

The flag thing has been exhausted on
this thread.
That detraction didn't work the first time.

Stomacharmeleon · 02/12/2023 18:47

Definitely, the man tries to hijack any worthwhile cause and draw the attention to himself. I was quite pleased to see he was arrested within minutes of showing up at this march and didnt grab the headlines he probably expected, maybe he'll realise how inconsequential he really is now!

ChickHenLittle · 02/12/2023 18:53

Detract from what?

Depdawg · 02/12/2023 18:55

ChickHenLittle · 02/12/2023 18:53

RTFT.
I don't particularly like the idea of being harangued by somebody waving a Palestinian flag.
A bit too close too Hamas for my liking.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 02/12/2023 18:56

Why is the Israeli flag - the national flag of a democratic, liberal, open society - being equated to the Hamas flag?

Is it not obvious how stupid and, frankly, unpleasant that equivalence is?

I get that people can be politically opposed to a country. Set fire to the Stars and Stripes, the EU flag or the Union Flag by all means, knock yourselves out.

But trying to suggest that Israel’s national symbol should be treated as a terrorist emblem is loathsome. And gives away the Jew hate that motivates it.

Yet again: Israel is the one, single Jewish state and homeland. It is a democracy. The only one in the entire region. Oppose the existence of Israel and its symbols - as Hamas do - and your antisemitism is on display.

Please can you explain. Who exactly is the 'Pro-Israel Lobby' and in what way did they hijack the march? I was there, how would I have witnessed this hijacking?

I am new to the thread, please explain?

Israel is a Zionist state, commiting violence to acheive Zionist beliefs about the God-given land of Israel to Jews.

Not all Jews agree with that belief, or Israel's actions.

I completely abhor discrimination for reasons of race and/or faith, and therefore would happily join a march against anti-Semitism.

However, given Israel is stealing land from Palestinians, and oppressing and discriminating against people who are not Jewish, I don't support them.

I believe Israeli's should have peace and security, and that Israeli children should grow up without fear because of their race/faith.

I don't think killing thousands of civilians will provide that peace and security

I don't really have time to read every post, although I try to keep up with all the threads I'm on. I don't see how it's invalid to wish to attend a march without flags. I like the idea of the march for peace posted as another thread, where everyone can attend devoid of flags or whatnot. I'm actually sad I can't attend, I'm not near any big cities, let alone London.
The Palestinian flag doesn't represent Hamas, as I'm sure you know. I believe Hamas has their own flag.

parksandrecs · 02/12/2023 19:01

Israel and anti-semitism are not the same. Israeli flags imply suport for Israel's actions, and that is not the same as supporting anti-semitism

Depdawg · 02/12/2023 19:01

The Palestinian flag represents Hamas, when it's being waved by those shouting death to all Jews.

Stomacharmeleon · 02/12/2023 19:02

@SharonEllis I was ignoring that.

@parksandrecs we did discuss this at the beginning of the thread in real detail. So politely it's been done.

Some people had flags.
Lots of people didn't (I didn't)

I hope we were all there to March against antisemitism. It was a peaceful March and there was no aggression, calls to arms or demonising other groups. No masks, no questionable placards (that I saw) or nastiness.

It was just a nice March.
