There were non-Jewish people at the march. There were Jewish people not at the march. Yet you're talking about the Jewish community as a whole being despicable for going to the march.

The only one conflating Jewish people ad Israel is you.

I do hope the deliverer of the parcel is OK.

Woah @beachcitygirl
Where have you been?

Most probably just parking up.

Thereissomelight · 27/11/2023 17:34

Hope she sticks around!

I'm sure she will, unless she's not got somewhere else to be. Derailing a thread is a fun past time for some.

beachcitygirl · 27/11/2023 17:38

@basculin I was resolving to @Depdawg post where they referred to the Jewish community feeling safe.

(I found that odd at a March full of the flags of a murderous genocidal government) but hey you do you.
It's just you can't claim ignorance when people suggest support of Israel when people are LITERALLY waving israeli flags. Ludicrous position to take.

Ps many many Jewish people, british people, Scottish people and people from many other nations at the free Palestine marches every Saturday.

HTH.

Very telling that some can't just be happy that the Jewish community were given a collective safe space yesterday. These are the same folk who no doubt talk about bigotry elsewhere.
Glad the event gave Jewish people some glimmer of hope.

a “glimmer of hope” ? give me strength. If my eyes could roll any further they would fall out of my head. Give your head a wobble and check your privilege.

Hatred and racism are awful and I feel sorry for anyone experiencing this right now. Frankly though, this post sums up my views on this topic.

Humdingerydoo · 27/11/2023 17:43

The people I know who were waving Israeli flags aren't supporting Israel's actions, they're supporting Israel's right to exist. Just like the Palestinian flags were supporting their right to exist. Not sure why the people who were in the demonstration the day before didn't join in this march against anti-Semitism? They've clearly stated multiple times they have no problem with Israel existing and "from the river to the sea" doesn't mean no Israel, they should have been able to join both events. Unless, of course, they're not against anti-Semitism, or unless they're not ok with Israel existing. But that's not the case, so their non-presence really doesn't add up. It's all very strange. It's almost like people are saying one thing but mean another.

Reallifelurker · 27/11/2023 13:33

It is possible to criticise Israel without being antisemitic. It’s also possible, and much more likely, that criticism of Israel is an expression of antisemitism
Why is it more likely?

And virtually every critic of Israel in this country eventually gives away their underlying prejudices against Jews. It’s nearly always Jew-bashing that motivates anti-Israel sentiment
Again: why do you say that? It’s not as if Israel has done nothing wrong.

Experience. Sooner or later the jew haters slip up. Many people aren't consciously antisemitic but they hold Israel & Jews to different standards. Its the way most prejudice works.

This is a good read regarding a post previously about the absence of the left at the march yesterday.

I never liked Israel’s violent, racist, right-wing, fanatical settler approach and I thought that all Israelis thought that way. But they do not.

No they do not. Israelis have done their own protest marches against their government.

This reveals how little you know! It would be constructive if people would do some research.

My privilege? You are assuming I have one. I would like to know when that is going to start. Not sure about your attachment and how that is supposed to address antisemitism, as the march did yesterday. Are you on the right thread?

SharonEllis · 27/11/2023 17:48

@Reallifelurker sorry I think I got mixed up. Yes lots of opposition to the current government in Israel!!

Another one who can't understand the concept of caring about nore than one thing at a time. Jews are not allowed to complain about anti-Semitism because something worse is going on somewhere.

Waving the flag of any country doesn’t mean you support a government nor its military policy."

Whilst you might say that bearing Israel's national flag does not necessarily signal your approval of that country's military policy and that your support is limited to the other, more acceptable aspects of the nation, this is blindly ignoring what is going on.

At present, Israel is conducting a campaign more viscious and more inhumane than any it has carried out before. So grotesque is its retaliation that one cannot help but define Israel by these actions for as long as they continue. Hence the Israeli flag cannot be seen as anything but an approval for its current campaign.

And no matter how much you would argue, most people would see it as such.

If you want to show support for loved ones in that land, hold up their picture, write them a letter, have a placard that shows your empathy with them, but don't feed the Israeli politicians.

I have been researching a lot since this conflict involving thousands of child deaths started.

Should I have been researching Israel before that? If so, why?

I attended a local march for Palestine on Saturday. The rise in both antisemitism and islamophobia is awful. However whilst I support the reasons for the march I would not have attended. The flags of Israel flying high would have made me feel very uncomfortable as I would have have associated them as pro Israeli government which stands against what I have just been marching for the day before.
