Well, the government was democratically voted in. But yes - you can’t expect that everyone in a country thinks the same way. I just didn’t realise there was such a suppression of free speech.

Would you say the same applies to Gaza? That not everyone there supports Hamas and therefore the population doesn’t deserve to be murdered in their thousands and displaced in their millions?

Our government is democratically elected, do you think every single person in the UK thinks the same way? Or the USA? Or any other country in the world? And I'm still confused why you thought Israelis always thought the same way based on some posts on mumsnet from posters who mostly aren't Israeli.

And of course I don’t think everyone in Palestine supports Hamas, I'm not an idiot.

Oh and by the way, did you miss all the widescale and widely covered protests taking place in Israel over the past year?

Very telling that some can't just be happy that the Jewish community were given a collective safe space yesterday. These are the same folk who no doubt talk about bigotry elsewhere.
Glad the event gave Jewish people some glimmer of hope.

These are the same folk who no doubt talk about bigotry elsewhere.

Yes, quite. This quote's taken from social media

"My father, an old-school Marxist in his seventies, attended yesterday's march against antisemitism… it was his first protest in years.

He was furious.

He couldn't understand why the Left were absent from the march. In his mind, the Left always led the marches against antisemitism. They stood in solidarity with its victims.

He kept asking:

Where were the Trade Unions?
Where were the banners of the Left?
Where were the anti-fascists?
Where was the Left?

When I explained to him that the so-called champions of anti-racism were branding this as a "march for genocide", he was outraged. In response to a 1500% rise in antisemitism, the Jewish community organised our biggest protest since Cable Street and the Left abandoned us.

Those who oppose a march against antisemitism are not anti-racist… they're racist."

I haven't seen anyone on this thread being unhappy about the march taking place. Try not to imagine things.

Personally, way, way upthread I stated that the more going the better. But I questioned the wisdom of having Israeli flags there and I also had a look at the methodology used to derive values for its attendance.

I have yet to see a post where people have been unhappy about the march itself. Please give examples.

What is your issue with the flag bearing? If you take issue with the Israeli flag then you must apply the same rationale to the Palestinian one. Do you?

Perhaps this wonderful man should have added

Where are the Mumsnetters on this thread who insist they are not antisemitic?

Those who are silent in their support ....

That's an extremely good point, where were they? They should have been there.

Perhaps in these days of polarisartion, where standing in only one camp or the other has become the norm, the left felt that by having nailed their colours to the mast already, by siding with the Palestinians, they could not bear to be seen showing any empathy with the other party.

Oh how wonderfully black and white the world will be when we all just slot into a pigeon hole. Then we won't have to think.

Is there juxtaposition in your post or am I just cross-eyed?

I’m glad you don’t think everyone in Gaza supports Hamas. So do you oppose the current slaughter of thousands and thousands of people there?

I bet that question has been answered 20 fold.

Jupitersstorm · 27/11/2023 16:20

Thereissomelight · 27/11/2023 14:55

I will repeat: Israel has no right to kill thousands of innocent children. It’s not their fault that they’re in the way of the IDF reaching Hamas.

You're right. It is the fault of Hamas.

FFS of course it's building up to this little "test". Even on a thread about anti-Semitism everyone has to be put through it. Yes. Happy? Am I acceptable to you now?

Can you please explain how you thought every single person in Israel had the exact same opinion based on some non Israeli posts on mumsnet?

It wasn’t just on Mumsnet.

No, I can’t explain it.

Thank you for your answer. By the way, I didn’t intend to “test” you. I started by posting what I genuinely thought was a bit of an olive branch but you kept on poking at my post.

Hamas is not bombing them. Israel is.

It depends what that joke was and how it was nuanced.

Well your "joke" has been rightfully deleted now.

Saying "I used to think the 9+ million people in Israel feel the same way based on a few opinions from people who may not even be Israeli but then I discovered there are some good Jews" is a shit olive branch.

Mdg247 · 27/11/2023 16:57

OuiOuiKitty · 27/11/2023 12:56

I'm going to stick my head above the parapet here and say that actually yes, for me it really is difficult to understand. Israel have killed 1 in 200 children in Gaza, they have injured 1 in 100 in 50 days. Now imagine the UK killing 1 in 200 French children in 50 days and people wrapping themselves in the Union Jack and shrugging saying well, I don't necessarily agree with everything the UK does 🤷🏻‍♀️. This isn't disagreeing with inheritance tax changes or their policy on carbon emissions, this is mass slaughter and whether you intend to or not if you choose to wrap yourself in the flag of a foreign country currently engaged in mass slaughter people will assume you are making a statement on their current actions.

I'm nobodies moral compass, people can do what they want and what they feel good about but you can't control other people's reaction or feelings about you choose to do. Some people will form negative opinions about people that choose to surround themselves with the flag of a foreign country currently accused of war crimes and who are actively engaged in killing 1 in 200 of their neighbours children. You can't control that, people are entitled to their opinion, just like the many threads here about 'hate marches' and the opinions people have about them.

May I politely ask here, why the flag is such an issue for you?

Waving the flag of any country doesn’t mean you support a government nor its military policy. Plenty of people wave British flags at numerous occasions, it doesn’t mean they’re a fan of Rishi Sunak or they’re in favour of past British military excursions.

By the same degree as you have mentioned, should many British Jews feel appalled by the Palestinian flag? Since it is often waved by antisemites AND peaceful protestors?

i would argue most people wave the israeli flag in solidarity with family and friends, not for political reasons. People are human beings, no matter who their government are.

You’re making this into something it is not and dehumanising israelis at the same time, since many of them oppose netanyahu, want to live in peace, and are also being tarnished by the brush of the government, to be labelled ‘white supremacists’ ‘Nazis’ and everything else they are all being lumped in with. I don’t see anything wrong with supporting other human beings.

beachcitygirl · 27/11/2023 17:01

I couldn't imagine why any decent human being would attend a March full of Israeli flags.

I also can't imagine why any decent human being would attend a March full of the butchers apron flag either.

Nationalism at its bloody warmongering worst.

Call out antisemitism and Islamophobia in real
Life & online. Live decently. Oppose slaughter of innocents, vote accordingly.

From where do Hamas originate?

Speaking for myself I did not come here to bitch about yesterday’s march but to make a comment about the pro-Palestinian marches being equally important. I dunno if that’s a controversial view but I doubts it’s derailed the thread as there were not many responses to it (just one I think)

Nothing to say? You were all guns blazing a few minutes ago. Why do you take umbrage at the Israeli but not Palestinian flag? Have you gone off to calm down after your outburst(s)?
