Sorry, lets get back to the march, nationalism and flags. It's more relevant.

Thereissomelight · 27/11/2023 14:20

I have to say that despite having read some absolutely horrible, chilling views on mumsnet and elsewhere about the murders of all those Gazan children, I’ve also heard plenty of far more moderate responses from Israelis and Jewish people worldwide. And it’s those voices that funnily enough are making me feel a tiny bit more sympathy with Israel than I ever felt before. I never liked Israel’s violent, racist, right-wing, fanatical settler approach and I thought that all Israelis thought that way. But they do not.

No they do not. Israelis have done their own protest marches against their government.

Well to answer YOUR questions, how many other nations that are being supported militarily by the US, UK and EU have just bombed and killed 6000 CHILDREN in 6 weeks?
If there are any, I’ll object to that situation too.

I have no reason to accept the figures, but I’ve no wish to be unrealistic so am obviously willing to say that the results of the action against Hamas are very distressing to see.

But you left out a rather big point, didn’t you. Your question should have been:

“how many other nations that are being supported militarily by the US, UK and EU have just bombed and killed 6000 CHILDREN in 6 weeks, in an effort to protect the nation and its people from a terrorist organisation that is committed to, and has a charter that promises, Israel’s destruction and the murder of all its Jewish citizens, and that has funding and direction from the rogue state of Iran, and that committed mass murder, rape and mutilation a matter of weeks ago?”

If you had included the important last bit you would have answered your own question. But you chose not to, didn’t you?

I found your joke offensive. What would you think if a poster would make a joke about a Muslim?

It depends what that joke was and how it was nuanced.

Nothing justifies murdering thousands of innocent children I’m afraid. You’re sounding like you think their lives are worth less than Israeli lives.

Shhhhivegotasecret · 27/11/2023 14:35

Why has a thread about marches against anti-semitism become completely derailed?

No, that’s plainly not what I said or implied. I said that Israel has a right and a duty to protect itself. That includes action to chase down terrorists who hide behind civilians.

If you don’t think it’s right that Israel should protect itself and its citizens, well, there we have it.

I will repeat: Israel has no right to kill thousands of innocent children. It’s not their fault that they’re in the way of the IDF reaching Hamas.

Quite revealing though.

They’re not really hiding behind civilians though. If you bomb a city there are going to be civilians there 🤷‍♀️Their leaders are not even in Gaza.

I don’t expect there to be zero civilian casualties in a war but all this talk of human shields never struck me as the stance of a government prepared to take responsibility for its actions.
Though the attack on Gaza itself is justified given Hamas recent actions.

Why would you ever think that an entire country of almost ten million people think the exact same way?

basculin · 27/11/2023 15:25

quiteoldad · 27/11/2023 14:18

Of course I haven't got any Jewish friends, because I have no friends at all and that's why I spend all day at a computer.

Edited

Quelle surprise.

Thereissomelight · 27/11/2023 15:30

Because they were the only voices I was hearing. Voices like the posters on here who think that killing thousands of children is justified because they’re in the way of the IDF reaching Hamas.

Now I’m realising that the more moderate voices were and are being suppressed by Israel’s so-called democratic government. eg Gideon Levy and many others.

I naively believed that because Israel tells us it’s the only civilised democracy in the ME, everyone there had free speech.

Thereissomelight · 27/11/2023 15:30

I haven't seen many posts justifying the murder of children. And as far as I know most posters on here aren't actually Israeli.

Thinking that evert single person in a country thinks in the exact same way is frankly idiotic.

Well, the government was democratically voted in. But yes - you can’t expect that everyone in a country thinks the same way. I just didn’t realise there was such a suppression of free speech.

Would you say the same applies to Gaza? That not everyone there supports Hamas and therefore the population doesn’t deserve to be murdered in their thousands and displaced in their millions?

"If you think that affinity with Israel is warmongering you are showing your dislike of Jews and Jewish perspectives."

And again you are seeing things and making false assumptions.

I do believe that showing affinity with Israel at present is warmongering. But not because I dislike Jews or Jewish perspective ( some of my best recipes are Jewish) but because I believe Israel to be currently behaving in a vindictive, vengeful and disproportionate manner.
Haven't you realised ? It is possible to criticise Israel without being Antisemitic.

You can criticise the actions of the current Israeli government without being antisemitic but to say that having an affinity with the flag or the state is 'warmongering' is ridiculous. I can still be patriotic about Britain without supporting the British government. This is really simple to understand and so we can only assume you are being disingenuous.

Very telling that some can't just be happy that the Jewish community were given a collective safe space yesterday. These are the same folk who no doubt talk about bigotry elsewhere.
Glad the event gave Jewish people some glimmer of hope.

It has been very revealing about the need for the March though. So glad to have been there, shoulder to shoulder with open minded people

I haven't seen anyone on this thread being unhappy about the march taking place. Try not to imagine things.

Personally, way, way upthread I stated that the more going the better. But I questioned the wisdom of having Israeli flags there and I also had a look at the methodology used to derive values for its attendance.

I have yet to see a post where people have been unhappy about the march itself. Please give examples.
