Freedom of speech you say?

So it's OK for famous/ less famous people to back one side but not OK for others to back another side?

These are just a few examples of how pressures/ firings are directed at those criticising Israel. Is this normal? What the heck is happening? Is this to silence anyone from voicing what they think is the truth?

I would have understood if they imposed a kind of blanket gag order on all actors/ celebrities not to discuss the conflict.

But!

This is happening while hundreds of others publically supported Israel and were instead celebrated.

McCarthyite witch hunt, I say.

@Ohlalalalala tbh I don't care what you think. If I see statements that use anti Semitic tropes such as 'the Zionists control the media' I'll report them. Mumsnet are taking them down. If that offends your sense of what freedom of speech should look like, well, I guess I don't give a shit

Firstly, mind your language.
Secondly, did you read what I said to you in my post?
Thirdly, your feelings towards me are reciprocated!

What did Sarondon say? Oh yes - how glad she was that Jewish people in America felt threatened. That's SO pro-Palestine isn't it?

Israel has no less right to exist than any of the other countries around it. It is not a 'zionist project' or any other racist slur, it is people living on land that was given to them by the administration that owned it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 23/11/2023 12:04

And then what continue the status quo of being oppressed and besieged by a bully?

Would you prefer Israel don't defeat Hamas?

Because life under Hamas isnt' exactly pleasant for the average Gazan and that is leaving aside their tendency to provoke Israel into periodic airstrikes.

They're still firing heavy barrages of rockets at Israel, which conveniently gets forgotten about in the calls for a ceasefire.

25milesfromhome · 23/11/2023 12:05

I explained on the other thread why I don't like this and feel it legitimizes stereotypes/tropes. Fine for you to disagree.

If “explaining” something is the same as doubling down on wilful misinterpretation and ignorance to prop up your own prejudice, then sure, agree to disagree.

I don't think saying the Zionists is any different from the Islamists, for example. They are not one body, but have a similar overall goal/view, even if they have some differences.

This is shockingly racist and antisemitic. It displays a fundamental misunderstanding of what Zionism is and what it means to Jewish people.
Redefining and reframing a specific concept or belief in self determination for a specific minority according to your own ideology, because you think you know better, is racist.

To go back to my original op. Here's an interesting book exploring the special relationship between Hollywood and Israel. It has been written by two academics.

Funny how you only seem to care about anti-Semitism when it comes from a Jewish man.

And yeah if someone walked down the street with a sign calling any other country cunts, whether they mean the government or the people there, they'd probably be spoken to by the police. If someone was waving a placard that said "Palestine, what a cuntry" would you be defending it as satire?

Tbh SBC is the only one I know of who has done this. If anything it makes it more acceptable because he's Jewish. But I explained on the other thread why I don't like satire being taken outside its intended audience. Just my opinion, which counts for nothing.

@Queucumber why "shocking?" International civil organizations have voiced concern on this.

Why is it racist? There are people from all races that are pro Zionist. And whilst a high proportion of Jewish people are Zionist, not all are. I heard 40% of Jewish young people in US think that Israel is an apartheid state. Jewish people are not a homogenous body.

Queucumber · 23/11/2023 12:21

Sarcasm.

Finally, we got there in the end, well done!

There is no zionist project. As already explained to you this implies all jews acting together in sort of collective action and is why, when people dislike something a particular Israeli government does, all Jews are collectively held resonsible. Its why Jews get attacked when conflict occurs in the middle east. To use this sort of rehetoric is disgraceful. Some Israeli politicians have said disgraceful things about Palestine. Some, in this government, dont want a 2 state solution. Its a democracy with a large variety of views. Of course the state of Israel has a lot of backing - it is surrounded by countries who have stated tbey wish to destroy Israel and are virulently antisemitic. Of course Israel has to control its borders, as any state does. The imbalance is huge and for you to try & pretend that a few extremists in Israel (who have internal opposition) can be equated with the clear genocidal intent of Hamas, Iran, Hezbollah Islamic Jihad etc etc etc is mind blowing.

But I thought they were all part of the zionist project. Very confusing!!

feralunderclass · 23/11/2023 12:27

@25milesfromhome not liking SBCs "throw the Jews in the well" is nothing to do with my prejudices. I don't think legitimising stereotypes or tropes of religions, disabilities or any other marginalised group is a good thing for the public audience.

@SharonEllis what does that mean? You think all Jews are part of a Zionist project?

HermioneWeasley · 23/11/2023 12:37

Susan Sarandon expressed her pleasure that Jews in America were being threatened because now they understood how it feels to be Muslim in America. It was an outright racist comment for which she had rightly been criticised.

Twitter was trying to cancel University Challenge and indeed the entire BBC because an episode recorded months ago featured a toy octopus as a mascot. This is 'open anti semitism' apparently and 'racist'. I literally only realised in the past month that this faultline existed in the western world, it's never crossed my mind once to think of a person as Jewish or to have any opinion about them whatsoever. But apparently we hate them.

What concerned me was that the hate was directed at the one Muslim student in a hijab, but the whole team chose the mascot! I found it horrifying that this bright young woman was singled out for racist abuse. I suppose our local aquarium will have to stop selling octopus toys now, I only hope the creature itself will be left alone as they are remarkably clever beings.
