Why only 28 out of 31 premature babies have been transferred to Egypt
Ethar Shalaby
BBC Arabic

I have been speaking to Dr Mohamed Salama who is head of the neo-natal unit at al-Ahli Emirates hospital, where the 31 premature babies were taken after being evacuated from al-Shifa.

“Some parents arrived yesterday at al-Ahli Emirates hospital to identify their babies”, he says, “We asked them to sign a consent form so that their babies will be sent to receive treatment in Egypt.

"We have one baby who is unidentified and his parents are unknown. He is still here with us. The decision to keep him was taken by the Gaza health ministry as his condition is stable and does not need to be moved for treatment.

"Two babies, their parents refused to send them out due to personal circumstances."

Dr Salama says that three babies are in a stable condition.

BBC

Thankyou for that update.
Im sure I’m not alone in previously thinking the worst.

Trying to find how much infrastructure has been bombed in Gaza and how many lives have been lost there isn’t a lot of credible evidence available short of keeping track over time of every building, which I haven’t done.
Attached is one article by AA a Turkish agency which I am aware supports Palestine. ( although relations with Israel improved in 2022)
If anyone here has another source pleased advice.

Im just trying to see if any of Gaza will be inhabitable when and if Israel withdraw and whether justification has been made for bombings of key infrastructure.

Ziad, a 35-year-old Palestinian in Gaza, has been writing a diary for the Guardian during Israel’s campaign against Hamas. Here is an excerpt from today:

Every morning, thousands of people are in the streets looking for what they need: food, medicine, blankets, heavy clothes. I saw a mother screaming at her young son in the middle of the street. It turned out that he got distracted and she had been looking for him for almost an hour.

“How would I find you if you got lost?” she screamed. Other women were calming her down.

These days we hear many stories about parents who lost their children, whether while fleeing or in public places. Most of the evacuating people are in these new areas for the first time, they may have passed by them before, or visited, but knowing the area is really difficult when most people have lost their ability to focus due to fear, stress or lack of sleep.

I remember talking to my friend who had a new baby girl months ago. “I know this will sound scary, but please, write on your daughter’s body all the identification information in marker, just in case,” I said. He was silent for a second, then he told me that he agreed with me.

I have witnessed several times the same situation, a group of boys go out to play with a ball, and the parents, usually fathers, would go out angry and tell them to get back inside. “If a bombing happens now, what will happen to you?! Go inside, immediately.”

From the Guardian. A sad read.

@Readingallnight I've heard a couple of times Jeremy Bowen (BBC correspondent) describe a trip he went on with the IDF to northern Gaza. He recounts not seeing a single building undamaged.

Sorry, I can't link exactly, but it was on a recent Newscast and a Today Programme debate, which I think was broadcast yesterday evening.

Efacsen · 20/11/2023 13:28

The World Health Organization has confirmed that the 28 premature babies evacuated from the al-Shifa hospital have arrived safely in Egypt.

Ill keep looking, much appreciated.

@Efacsen they aren't in a cluster though. There are numerous hospitals more accessible from Israel than al shifa...

tobeinthemaldives · 20/11/2023 14:23

"A British doctor who used to work at Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital has revealed there were ‘no-go areas’ in the building where he ‘would be shot’ if he went."

Sounds very suspicious.

Eyewitness account of British doctor who said :
"‘If hospital staff were 10% frightened of possible Israeli airstrikes, they were 90% frightened of being persecuted by Hamas.’ "

British doctor who worked at Al Shifa was warned of Hamas-run spots

Hamas has denied Al Shifa is used as a base but the anonymous doctor told France 24: 'I was told there was a part of the hospital I was not to go near, and if I did, I'd be in danger of being shot.'

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 14:39

I certainly do not read the daily mail or have ever used it as a source of information

But if someone does then one thing it shows that everyone in Gaza had to toe the line or there would be repercussions

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 14:42

Some positive news today in terms of health care; Jordan is setting up a temporary field hospital in Khan Younis which is in the south of Gaza
This should be up and running in a few days

Efacsen · 20/11/2023 14:52

@Parkingt111 and Qatar and UAE are also wanting to send field hospitals into Gaza as well

Nothing more being reported about evacuation of other patients from Al Shifa - yet

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 14:56

@Efacsen oh that would be great
I believe France is also sending a ship that can be used as a hospital to Egypt primarily for patients who are evacuated out of Gaza aswell as assisting with other medical aid

Efacsen · 20/11/2023 15:11

Last little bit about the babies

BBC Arabic correspondent Yasmine Shahine reports from Cairo that some of the babies are being admitted to hospital in al-Arish, which is some 40km (25 miles) from the border with Gaza. Others, in more serious conditions, are being flown to Cairo for treatment.

An Italian doctor who was there a number of years ago has also said the same thing according to that.

I am sure that doctors working there would be too scared to speak out even if they weren't Hamas supporters. An Amnesty report from 2015 said Hamas "interrogated" people around the compound. This thread has some sources attached. (I haven't read it all.)

https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/hamas-tortured-and-killed-palestinian-collaborators-during-gaza-conflict-new-report

The question is not do Hamas use the compound, but how much?

Hamas tortured and killed Palestinian 'collaborators' during Gaza conflict - new report

We are Amnesty International UK. We are ordinary people from across the world standing up for humanity and human rights.

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 15:41

@StarbucksSmarterSister good points mentioned by yourself.
I think people forget that Hamas is not just a terror organisation living in Gaza. They are the actual government there and will no doubt be using the services of Gaza.
The question remains is, is Hamas head quarters under Al shifa hospital as Israel has claimed.
So far there has been no sufficient evidence to support this claim but I think as the days go by we may get a clearer picture of the situation

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 15:53

BBC news is reporting from one of the mothers of the premature babies. She said she had to leave her three other children behind in Gaza to go with her baby to Egypt and sadly didn't even get a chance to say goodbye to them. She was clearly in an impossible situation and I hope she can be reunited with them

Her final message to the world was:
"My message to the world is 'enough'. These are innocent children,"

No matter our stance there are I know alot of people who right now may be empathising with her. Especially as mothers

Parkingt111 · 20/11/2023 15:55

She looks like she has had a really tough time
Prayers for her 🙏

And also from this same mother

"We do not want anything from anybody, we are prepared to live under the tent on our ruined houses, just let us live."

on one of the threads somebody made a really mean comment on how they hoped that after this the Gazans wouldn't recieve any funding or aid from our governments and let them deal with their own made problems themselves. I didn't address it because* *you know pick and choose your battles but it always stuck with me. When I saw this strong lady's message it really moved me and reminded me of that. They don't want anything from you. They just want to live

It's one of the tropes that Zionists come out with. Palestinians are so useless and lazy that the people in Gaza have no jobs and they leech from Israel who are so kind and generous to give them water and power blah blah blah. It's obviously all because of the blockade. Palestinians are exactly like everyone else on earth - they want to raise families, work and live in peace.

The fact remains that no matter what is under the hospital how Israeli forces have behaved at al Shifa in recent weeks is barbaric and totally unnecessary.

Hamas has used hospitals, used its own people as human shields. This is a breach of international law. Hamas has a lot for which to answer.

Sometimes it’s just best to walk away from such inhuman thoughts.
Personaly I feel sorry for such people but at the same time I won’t engage. They will have to live with their own hate.

@Toothyfruity not all, some are sympathetic but yes unfortunately some people do feel the need to kick others when they are already on the ground

And yes they are just normal people who want nothing more than to live normal lives just like the rest of us

Why one wonders does Israel need so many Palestinians to work in Israel, surely by doing so they are not lazy and useless….they are in fact needed!

Israel needs workers because many ultra Orthodox, the Haredim male Jews do not work. They study their religion. The women do work but with large families this is not always possible.
It has been a big problem in Israel for some time.
Here in the UK the 2 child policy and reduction on rental support was highlighted by the Jewish community in Stamford hill to hit their community the hardest as many of their men did not work.

Palestinians and others are holding up the economy of Israel, I wonder how they are coping now having taken so many of these workers hostage.

(n.b. Reuters and others have published info on this. I can’t attach as there are so many adverts I’m having trouble deleting. )

On another thread
‘Be aware of misinformation seen regarding Palestine’ @Roste has posted a speech at the UN
I don’t know how to tag but here’s a screen shot if anyone would like to follow it up.
It is very powerful
I hope @Roste doesn’t mind me passing this on
