There's a lot of misinformation/propaganda spreading around and this thread is to raise awareness of the ones circulating. Here's one for example:

Please share any you come across.

@notsoready4school
when this first happened I thought how stupid Hamas are but as it develops I can see they were clearly playing the long game and knew the nature of their oppressors too well.

Well, they certainly know how to manipulate the West via social media.

SovietSpy · 13/11/2023 21:13

This article on Vox has some good analysis on how social media platforms are being used to push propaganda.

this paragraph also stood out to me:

Check in with yourself and think critically about the role you want to play on- and offline in a moment like this. That might mean resisting the impulse to become an instant breaking news reporter in your group chat. If you don’t have the skill set to evaluate for accuracy the videos of on-the-ground footage in a neighborhood you’ve never visited, you’re not likely to develop it in a matter of minutes.

That’s a great article @SovietSpy

MCOut · 13/11/2023 21:19

@Teentaxidriver And this is how I can tell you yourself are not a minority. Go and stick yourself in the corner and do not speak about what you do not understand. None of this is remotely helpful to Jewish people. They would know that this is a one-way ticket to being ignored and dismissed.

You sound like you admire the terrorist group Hamas. Do you condemn what they did on October 7th?

I’ll only answer that if you condemn what the IDF are doing right now. Do you ?

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2023 21:24

Teentaxidriver · 13/11/2023 19:45

TerryPratchett - I’d really like to talk properly about …. how hard you try to hide your antisemitism. Sadly though it is still there, lurking under the fluffy, supposedly decent, trying to appear reasonable language. Questioning whether there really has been a rise in antisemitism, minimising it by likening it to general racism [it isn’t like racism or do you not get that? They are an ethnoreligious group], pretending you thought calling them “the Jews” is acceptable nomenclature, alluding to the desire for the destruction of Israel but admitting that since it is their only homeland maybe that isn’t ok. Hiding in plain sight.

I'm a big proponent of doing an honest self-examination about things like racism, antisemitism and other prejudices. They are often sub- or semi-conscious, and justified in one's own head. I think it's a good idea to look at oneself. Fish don't see the water and we often don't see our own issues. I've benefited from people educating me and looking at my own stuff.

So I do it, regularly, about any of the possible prejudices that being raised in any society can give you. I just don't see it. Israel is acting horrendously but that doesn't reflect in any way on Jewish people in the wider world. I think it's appalling that there is a rise in antisemitism.

Israel can't hide behind some Teflon barrier so no one can say anything bad.

whatswrongwiththeworldddd · 13/11/2023 21:24

@Noelectricheating do you condemn what Israel are currently doing?

A genuine answer though. I thought what Hamas did was terrible. I think though what Israel has been doing to the Palestinian people was terrible and what it is doing in Gaza now is way worse. It had been hidden for so long and it is now showcased on the global stage for all to see. I didn’t see that as an outcome of this. I did think there would be hell to pay but did not appreciate how out of control the Israeli government are. I expected something more in line with US approach on Afghanistan. Anyway I guess Hamas knew Netanyahu and the crazy government there too well.

MonsieurCrapeau · 13/11/2023 21:39

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2023 19:03

I'd really like to talk properly about each of these things:

Anti-Semitic attacks having increased 1000%. Is that hyperbole or actual attacks? Do you have a link? My understanding is that there has been a steady increase in crimes based on race and nationality in recent years. Brexit etc. and the general polarisation of society is poisonous. The rise of anti-Semitic, racism and the associated violence is dreadful.

Secondly, 'the Jews'. My understanding, and again I could be wrong, was that Jewish people in the main were good with being referred to, when it's relevant to mention race and/or religion, as Jews. There was a long thread on here ages ago saying that although some groups of people, I'll use myself, would rather be called a Polish person or a person with ADHD, to pick a couple of things, than a Pole or an ADHDer, Many Jewish people pick 'Jews' because it's a race and religion and the identifier is good for them. If it's not, it's worth a conversation. And if people object, I will absolutely choose to refer to people in the way they prefer. Language changes but people may be trying to refer to people correctly.

Third, the vast majority of people on here and IRL favour Israel and Palestine co-existing peacefully. Yes, on both 'sides' there is a contingent of people wanting to wipe the others off the map but the only 'side' capable of attempting that (and currently succeeding) is Israel. And it's complicated by Israel being the only Jewish state. And so objecting to Israel looks like objecting to Judaism, in a way that objecting to Palestine doesn't look like Islamophobia. But generally next to no one wants Israel wiped off the map.

It is horrifying to see anti-semitism crawl out of the woodwork and it's unsurprising given history that people are terrified. However seeing Israel's mass killings as wrong doesn't make someone anti-Semitic.

Antisemitic, Islamophobic offenses soar in London after Israel attacks

London police said on Friday they had recorded a 1,353% increase in antisemitic offences this month compared to the same period last year, while Islamophobic offences were up 140% in the wake of the attack by Hamas on Israel.

Biden’s response to this makes me sick. He knew he wasn’t going to be able to exert much control and yet is still giving Israel more. I doubt there will be any meaningful humanitarian conditions on this latest aid. Look at the poverty in the world and this is what they spend money on.

I truly do not understand how anybody can deny that what has been done to Palestinians is wrong and what is being done now is beyond evil. What happened on October 7 was heartbreaking, but it doesn’t justify this.

Howandwhy · 13/11/2023 22:03

This is exactly what people are sick of. My post has been removed...why? Because everything in it was fact. Those who support Israel's evil deeds never want to hear the truth. Cease fire now.

"This sort of thing" is pointing out the blatant truth. We must not do that unless it's towards the other side, right?

You can easily recover by focusing on the point. We need a ceasefire NOW!

I meant the bit where you told Jews not to “complain about Hitler”. Deeply offensive on every level.

I can promise you that I currently own no weapons of any sort or any power to make a ceasefire happen. Really doubt anyone here has weapons or the ability to make a ceasefire happen too. Therefore no idea why you keep repeating yourself.

The thread is about misinformation regarding the conflict. So it is yourself that is not focusing on the point in hand. I am simply replying to your posts.
