Illegal settlements

I just watched a piece on itv and sky news how Palestinians are abandoning their houses in the west bank as they face severe intimidation by settlers and army forces

The reporter says the settlements are illegal they are universally accepted as illegal so my question is why is nobody doing anything ??
What is the purpose of international law and the UN ? Is it just Israel that gets away with is ?

I just don't see what the point of saying something is illegal but continuing to build more and more settlements for people from
US kicking Palestinians out of their homes ? Why are they getting away with this ?

It's becoming apparent that international laws are pointless and only apply to certain countries.

All animals are equal and all that......

TakeMe2Insanity · 04/11/2023 19:31

Because the Israeli government backs the Settlers both through rebates and their own political motivations. Essentially the whole of Israel has been created via settlements: through out the residents and settle in.

Why isn’t international law applying to Iran as it brutalises its population and beats girls to death for not wearing a head scarf.
Why doesn’t it apply to Syria bombing its own population, massacring hundreds of thousands of people?
Why doesn’t it apply to Pakistan forcibly deporting millions of Afghans to a brutal regime?
Or to Afghanistan itself for terrorising its women and denying them basic human rights?
Because ‘international law’ is as powerful as armies willing to enforce it. Which of these countries do you want Britain to send troops to try and change? All of them?

We helped create this monster and US have been feeding and nurturing it for decades.

Yes, its easier have a race to the bottom than addressing the settlers behaviour.

It's all there is left tbh. No rational arguments can now excuse what's happening. Childish whataboutery is the last refuge of the desperate.

This thread is specifically about Palestinians and the West Bank. Why don't you start your own thread to discuss the places you mention?

iap · 04/11/2023 19:52

the questions by the OP were ‘what is the purpose of international law and the UN? Is it only Israel that gets away with it?m
I think my response answers that question.

(I do not support the settlers’ actions in the west bank.)

Because the issues that you have put forward are internal?

iap · 04/11/2023 20:01

the Geneva convention still applies and Syrian attacks, for example, have been categorised as war crimes.

This has been going on for decades. The people of Palestine have been trying to tell the world but we didn't listen. I wish this was something new but it's not. The only people who said they would listen was Hamas which is how they got elected. The only thing I can equate it to is how the brexit campaign sold a dream and gave lots of people hope for a 'better future' but the reality was that things aren't.

bearofepic · 04/11/2023 20:05

Do settlers that kill or injure Palestinians face any consequences for their actions whatsoever?

Not really, the IDF and govt are complicit, it’s been ramping up for years and now the violence is the worst ever

bearofepic · 04/11/2023 21:03

@Lonelycrab the whole situation is so sad and depressing.

ssd · 04/11/2023 21:17

It must be a terrifying, soul destroying way to live.

And there's posters on mn who support it all the way. I cant understand it.

But according to the west Israel is our ally a democratic country the only democratic country in middle east apparently

I went down the rabbit hole watched so many documentaries on the settlements and the abuse that Palestinians (not hamas) face by these settlers
A video of a young woman saying to a settler why are you taking my home and him replying if i don't take it someone else will 😳

The racism is despicable they truly think is their god given right ?? That an ancient book tells them is their land ?

The double standards are insane imagine a muslim said the same thing they would immediately be labelled and rightfully so as an extremist . Why aren't these people not labelled as such ?

Rarely. They’re highly protected by the courts which are all Israeli, obviously

SomeoneBurntTheToastAgain · 04/11/2023 21:31

ssd · 04/11/2023 21:17

I can. It’s pure anti-Muslim, racist sentiment that supports this. Look at what’s happening in Gaza. It’s a genocide. A total ethnic cleansing. And what are people saying on Mumsnet? “Israel has a right to defend itself…” or “But…HAMAS!”

maybe if Palestinians were white, blonde-haired, blue-eyed and non-Muslim then people would care more.

regularmumnotacoolmum · 04/11/2023 21:41

@SomeoneBurntTheToastAgain Also in addition to this, there is a significant population of Palestinian Christians who also face this persecution. The muslim charities raise awareness and I see the muslim community standing up for the Palestinians but I don't see a voice specifically for the Palestinian Christians. I fear they are forgotten as it's easier for the media to portray this as a war against muslim extremism rather than what it actually is.

You’re absolutely right. There are some horrible videos online of the IDF abusing the Christians and some orthodox Jewish people spitting near their churches. It’s all so sad.
I bought some Christmas decorations made from wood from olive trees crafted by Palestinian Christians a few years ago at my church. They’re simple and beautiful. I wish we could do more to help them all.

bearofepic · 04/11/2023 22:01

@SomeoneBurntTheToastAgain I've also seen really disgusting videos of IDF thugs brutalising unarmed orthodox jewish people who dared to oppose and protest against the current Israeli govt's war against Palestine. Kicking them, brutally hitting them, shoving them into buildings and onto the floor.

This isn't even a religious thing, this is directed at anyone, even Jewish people, who oppose the state's behaviour.

I also saw something earlier that was a govt member denouncing any Jewish person who opposed the govt's behaviour saying they could no longer "consider themselves Jewish".

This is what authoritarianism looks like and it's not nice.
