Conflict in the Middle East

To think Israel won't exist much longer?

Support in the west is declining, and when Israel doesn't have weapons and defense funding they won't be able to defend against their neighbouring countries on their own. AIBU to wonder how much longer it can exist given they are losing support?

Thats exactly what Hamas wants, for Israel - and Jews by extension - to be wiped off the Earth.
Do you actually know how much Israel contributes to science/technology/healthcare considering they are a tiny country (size of Wales), the PP who replied ‘who cares’? Everyone should care. And this is before even going there with a homeland for Jewish people.

This is true, definitely an outsized contribution to the sciences.

Sausagenbacon · 28/10/2023 08:30

As Netanyahu said 'if you took away Israeli arms there would be no Israel. If you took away Arab arms there would be no war'.

Yes why anyone would post in support of that aim. We’re getting pretty close to history now

tpxqi · 28/10/2023 08:31

If Israel didn’t exist how would the defence industry rip off the American taxpayer to extent that it does. Conflict is needed for that industry to flourish.

Don't assume that purple haired people with Palestine flags in their twitter bios represent the majority of public opinion.

Nail on head 👏

'Don't assume that purple haired people with Palestine flags in their twitter bios represent the majority of public opinion.'
Yes to this

Charles11 · 28/10/2023 08:32

It's looking more and more like there won't be any Palestinians anymore.

Staying well away from all the stuff more than adequately covered elsewhere... on what planet do you think Israel is losing support or that it will not continue to receive arms and defense support? Not happened. Not going to happen.

This. Saying Israel will shortly no longer exist is one of the most ridiculous, ill-informed opinions out there at the moment. And there are many to choose from

Sarahconnor1 · 28/10/2023 08:33

The US and the UK are abstaining or blocking cease-fires

The UK abstained because the draft resolution didn't include condemnation of the Hamas attack. Lots of other countries abstained for the same reason

Pugdays · 28/10/2023 08:20

Why is the UN not moving people out to safety, move out women and children and leave the men to fight ,or whatever they choose to do .

The neighbouring countries - most forcibly Egypt - have made it clear that huge numbers of Palestines are not welcome as refugees so where would they go?

Pretty much what I said up thread. I think this is far more likely, given how many Palestinians have been killed in the last 3 weeks compared to how many Israelis.

plumtreebroke · 28/10/2023 08:29

You have to assume Hamas knew what would happen when they entered Israel with the intention of killing civilians, not even pretending to be going for military targets. Israel would inevitably respond and the anger at the brutality of the attack meant that the response would be very violent. What were Hamas trying to do, get Gaza destroyed?

I think they were trying to pull everyone into a regional war and destroy Israel before any further agreements on normalisation went through.

There was no obvious strategic benefit to murdering a bunch of civilians. They weren’t trying to knock out Israeli military abilities they were killing normal civilians. They knew this would result in a massive reaction from Israel. I think they thought it would trigger help from hezbollah in the form of a multi front war on Israel.

Autumnalvibesofmellowness · 28/10/2023 08:34

I don't think you really think this.

You can see Gaza deserted and is being leveled. Apocalyptic scenes. The stated goal there clearly being achieved with Western support. Presumably you know how important is it to the US to have Israel there. Yet you think Israel is the one on the brink? Very odd reasoning.

grayhairdontcare · 28/10/2023 08:34

Israel will definitely still be here.
Gaza on the other hand, probably not

NmeChngeFail · 28/10/2023 08:35

Without Palestine there would be no Palestinians.

Tangled123 · 28/10/2023 08:35

The conflict won’t end until Israel have wiped out Palestine completely. It doesn’t matter what Hamas want, they are hugely outmatched and it’s Israel who have the support and resources to keep going. I would also be very surprised if all the people who left the last few weeks will go back.

saffronsoup · 28/10/2023 08:36

Israeli-Arab is a pretty offensive term to many. It is what was used back in '48 when any mention or sign of Palestine or being Palestinian was illegal with harsh punishments. The term was used as it shows who really owns and controls them (Israel) and strips Palestinians of their ethnonationality. While a minority of Palestinians use it in Israel for their own safety (it is safer to denounce your Palestinian heritage in order to be accepted and safe in Israel), the vast majority (60%+) find it very offensive.

TwilightSkies · 28/10/2023 08:38

Exactly!

Also, where are all the videos of Israeli’s being attacked/bombed? I haven’t seen a single one.

NmeChngeFail · 28/10/2023 08:38

Biden has long stated that America would have created an Israel if there wasn't one. So he will never let it cease to exist.

... and meanwhile a humanitarian crisis on unimaginable scale is unfolding.

Ididivfama · 28/10/2023 08:39

I disagree. The USA is a very big support. Most of the western governments support it.
Gaza will be gone soon.

sleepyscientist · 28/10/2023 08:39

It's Gaza that isn't going to exist, this has been on the cards since Hamas took control unfortunately. Long term maybe a West Bank administered by a neutral party like the west can co-exist but to me it's years in the future.

Zzizzisnotzeproblem · 28/10/2023 08:40

Israel have shown everyone exactly who they are.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 28/10/2023 08:41

The destruction of Israel is the wet dream of antisemites everywhere. It’s not going to happen however much some might wish for it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 28/10/2023 08:41

Did the events of October 7 pass you by?

Also Hamas are constantly firing rockets at Israel at present. Israel has better defence systems.
