Conflict in the Middle East

To think Israel won't exist much longer?

sergeantsalt · 28/10/2023 07:56

Support in the west is declining, and when Israel doesn't have weapons and defense funding they won't be able to defend against their neighbouring countries on their own. AIBU to wonder how much longer it can exist given they are losing support?

That's not what the thread is about. It's about whether it can when anti-Israel sentiment is the norm in universities, media, and among more and more politicians. Not taking about currently but say the next 50 years. I'm Jewish

Well said. I think one can only remain dignified, for so long. I hope others are reporting them xxx

@BlurredEdges it's fucking disgraceful. This poster has taken it upon themselves to "educate" MN by posting a screen of anti-Semitism, and clearly feels that's a perfectly reasonable thing to do, which is the most worrying part.

Thank you.

Is mumsnet actually going to let this effluent remain on its site?

Wonder how its advertisers feel about being associated with rhetoric that would sit nicely on Stormfront.

Can people stop throwing around accusations that other posters only care about Israel and ignore other conflicts. You do not know that to be true. You cannot possibly know, on an individual level, who has posted about or protested about what in the past, present or future. You won't see it here, because this is about Israel and Palestine. But don't make unfounded assumptions or accusations.

While I agree with parts of your post - your point that Palestine could have had their own state and a peaceful existance on their own land at any time - sounds like someone has drank the koolaid. A big part of the issue is the disagreement over rights to land and specifically Holy Places. Would Palestine have been able to choose their borders and boundaries or how would they have created this peaceful state and taken land from Israel without Israel pushing back? You really think Israel would have allowed Palestine to create a new free country within their borders? What if Palestine wanted to include Jerusalem in their new state? Would Israel have peacefully agreed to this? There is zero chance that Palestine could have had any time since '48 simply created their own free independent state and lived peacefully along side the Israeli's who would have agreed to give Palestine their land and cities. You need to go and read about what life was like for the '48 Palestinians.

But surely you must have realised this thread would bring about alot of anti semitism
Aswell as distracting from what is actually happening right now

Fahbeep · 28/10/2023 12:05

YABU, nonsense and antisemetic.

Yes, let's just forget October 7th even happened. The amount of times I've seen

"I don't condone Hamas, BUT.."

I also keep seeing, when people express anguish at the thousands of Palestinian deaths, ‘but what was Israel supposed to do’. I don’t think the current situation can be discussed without the use of the word ‘but’ 🤷🏼‍♀️

mollyfolk · 28/10/2023 12:07

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost73 · 28/10/2023 11:37

I am interested on these threads what people want to happen. Israel obvs isn’t going to disappear but people rightly feel outraged at what’s happening currently.

I have just watched settlers illegally demolishing Palestinian homes on the West Bank- literally happening today right now. How is that possibly right too?

Today- I would like to see an immediate ceasefire as a basic first step. Hamas to return the hostages immediately. And then serious proper negotiations on the establishment of a proper 2 state solution . Split the country fairly in half? Establish a proper Palestinian state. Pre 1967 boundaries too?

What else? How do you get rid of Hamas without violence? How did the good Friday agreement persuade the IRA to down weapons & give up violence?

Edited

the IRA were only part of the problem. The DUP continued to oppose the agreement. Ultimately, and in very short, what got it over the line was public support for peace both in Northern Ireland and the republic (where there was also a referendum)

Thank you. I think I remember from another thread that you are a Muslim, so a particular thank you for standing up against the horrendous antisemitism being posted here.

etmoietmoietmoi · 28/10/2023 12:08

@sergeantsalt If you are genuinely Jewish (unlike another poster on here who claims to be but very clearly isn't) why on earth did you start a thread which only a fool could not see is a GIANT dog-whistle to the antisemites hanging around MN over the last few weeks?!!

Exactly my thoughts.

ChalkWitch · 28/10/2023 12:11

@FlutterbyWhiskers -Well fuck my old boots, that’s a fucking train wreck:

The problem is Israel and the Jewish are quick to hide behind the holocaust and accusations of anti semitism when they are called out for their atrocities. So the world now sits and watches as Israel commits a genocide, the Jewish people have gone from being the abused to being the abuser.

All the posters that keep referring glibly to the Holocaust, implying that this is a current one, you clearly don’t know what it was.

As for the ‘Jewish people’? I’m actually speechless. You don’t like Jewish people? Just own it.

I have always thought Jerusalem should have been made an independent city state like the Vatican, neutrally administered with equal respect for all the religions to which it is sacred.

Hope @BlurredEdges and anybody else, who has to put up with racism, is OK. It's never OK, no matter what x

I'm Jewish, generally pro-Israel and completely agree with this.

I am genuinely Jewish. I have been stunned by people who justify terrorism and think Israel doesn't have a right to defend itself or exist. Good if it's a dog whistle let people take their masks off and show their antisemitism for what it is. That poster you mention is very clearly not Jewish and is a clear antisemite. But with antisemitism now socially acceptable and vocal antisemites in politics...I worry about the future.

Agree. And would also add that most Jews I know are genuinely pacifists. I was brought up to be a humanitarian first and foremost.

topnoddy · 28/10/2023 12:27

Israel has gone way beyond defending itself hasn't it

Just because someone is against what they are doing doesn't automatically make them anti-semetic
