Well, I got my day 21 progesterone result today, and, as I suspected, I've got a progesterone deficiency (my prog level was measuring 2.0 - not sure what the norm is?). Have now got to go back in 2 weeks time to check day 3 tests are normal & will then get a referral to a fertility consultant to sort out the prog deficiency. Has anyone else been treated (successfully?) for this? Am I right in thinking it's either progesterone supplements or clomid?

Not sure how long I'll have to wait for a referral - don't know what the usual wait is...

ionaming · 08/09/2005 20:37

Sorry AF showed up Milesysgirl.....hope your 2nd round of clomid gives you your BFP...

Thanks Debb. Have been using agnus castus & vit b6 + b complex for quite a while now. It worked on one cycle, but otherwise not much difference. Have now stopped the AC as I think it's a natural progesterone (?) & didn't want it to artificially inflate my prog levels in my 21 day blood test IYSWIM. I'm having the 21 day test repeated in 10 days & after that I will go back on the AC. I've continued with the B6/B-Complex throughout though. Also grapefruit juice, multi-vit/minerals, pineapple juice, acacia honey & evening primrose oil (up to ov).....maybe I'm overloaded !!!

MeerkatsUnite · 09/09/2005 07:07

Ionaming,

With regards to progesterone a "normal" level would be over 30. This would indicate that ovulation has occured.

My guess unfortunately (and I hope I am wrong here) will show an imbalance when it comes to the day 3 test as well. A caveat re day 3 - they MUST COMPARE your LH (leutenising hormone) against your FSH level (FSH is follicle stimulation hormone). If they do not do this then the test is meaningless.

You need a diagnosis of the problem but if this is a hormonally based disorder (in this regard PCO is a common culprit) then they may want to start you on clomid first. This is usually given in cases where ovulation is not happening regularly/at all.
Progesterone pessaries won't make much if any difference.

Glad to read that you have laid off the AC - this actually produces more LH hormone (not progesterone). If you are one of many women who are producing an excess of LH to start with taking AC can make things worse. Also it is not adviseable to self medicate AC especially if the underlying problem is hormonally based.

ionaming · 09/09/2005 15:55

Thanks for the info Meerkats - I always assumed I was ovulating ok because I was getting +ve OPK's which tied in with a temp dip, then subsequent 3 days of elevated temps. I know you can still have +ve OPK test & not be ovulating, but would you also get these temperature patterns? I've been using fertility friend for quite a few cycles now (this was how I recognised I had a LP defect & probably a prog deficiency in the 1st place) & I've always been able to identify "ovulation" on it. However, with my prog levels being so low, I am now starting to wonder if I'm ovulating at all?

I had dd1 4 yrs ago, got preg 1st cycle & no probs. What would cause the progesterone deficiency now, do you think?

Thanks, Iona

MeerkatsUnite · 09/09/2005 17:23

Hi Iona,

This is one problem (amongst many) with temp charts - you can have a rise in temp in the second half of your cycle when an egg has not been shed.

Positive opk's can also tie in with an excess of leutenising hormone (LH). The problem with these kits are twofold. First of all these kits measure LH. If you are one of many women who are actually producing an excess of this then the kit will read this and give you a false reading. Secondly these kits assume that a rise in LH is immediately followed by ovulaiton (not true) and that women only have one rise in LH every month (again not true). Although their advertising is persuasive they are really best avoided and particularly so if the menstrual cycle is irregular.

Progesterone is only part of it. The main two hormones that set the whole ovulation process going to start with are LH and FSH. An imbalance of these two (particularly if LH is higher than FSH) can be indicative of hormonal problems which will also trigger the ovulation problem. In this regard polycystic ovaries is a common culprit.

When you get the results of the day 3 let us know. Do ensure that the LH level is compared against that of the FSH!.

I wish you well

ionaming · 09/09/2005 21:15

Wow, thanks......will keep you posted. My results should be back early next week, so will let you know what my LH/FSH levels are. You seem to be far more knowledgeable than the doc I am seeing . But at least he agrees I have a problem (he was also very surprised when I correctly predicted I had a progesterone deficiency!) - the 1st doctor I consulted just dismissed it as me worrying too much & that "I'd had 1 child therefore would conceive another no problem" & a 7 or 8 day luteal phase was fine! Err..hello...... 11 cycles on & no pregnancy!

milesysgirl · 13/09/2005 20:53

hows everyone getting on just finished second month of clomid ....

Hi

I've not been around for a bit, generally been feeling sorry for myself, but a lot happier now the side effects seem to have worn off . Even better, I got a +ve OPK result today, so at least the Clomid is working!!

So, lots of jiggy jiggy for me today and tomorrow

Hope everyone else is OK?

Hi - I've just found this website and I am hoping someone can help me - I'm feeling very alone atm!

I came off BCP in April to ttc baby #1 and after my last withdrawal bleed on 18 April I have not had AF at all so presumably have not ovulated either. I have seen my doctor 3 times and she has finally referred me to a consultant, appointment to follow. I've been taking Agnus Castus for 2 months now and stll nothing and wondered if anyone has been in the same position? Any advice? Is my consultant likely to put me on clomid straight away to kick start my ovulation?

cuffyj1 · 17/09/2005 17:43

Hi i know i'm a bit behind but i've only just found this thread.

Dh and i were ttc for over 2 years and had many many trips to hospital for test after test after test to find the problem. We eventually found that i had pcos and i was prescribed clomid as i wasn't ovulating. After taking 4 cycles of clomid i am now 20 wks pregnant . I didn't have any side effects from it.

Roobedoo · 19/09/2005 20:27

Back from hols and unfortunately haven't brought a bump with me. Went to hosp today for pelvic scan - hoping to see lots of lovely follicles, but instead found a huge cyst. Nurse told me that the egg inside will be useless now and I just have to wait and see if the cyst burst by itself. Absolutely miserable. Another month passing us by. Plus, really upset with a friend who has been blabbing our fertility issues to mutual friends.

Loubie - enjoy the BD!
Katierocket - what's your latest?
Daisyhun - I suspect the consultant may make you wait a bit longer. I didn't have an AF for a year after coming off pill. I know it's frustrating though so hope you get a better result than, "just wait a bit longer, your body will sort itself out" because that sort of thing is really annoying!

milesysgirl · 19/09/2005 22:08

oh roobedoo sorry to hear about your cyst ....one of us on hear has got to get a bfp soon surely .......???????

OP posts:
Loubie37 · 20/09/2005 07:29

Hi everyone

Roobedoo, really sorry to hear about your cyst - I hope it disappears soon and you can get back on track.

I finally got crosshairs today, at 5DPO, my temps have been so erratic I was beginning to think I hadn't OV'd, so lots happier today

cuffyj1 - thanks for the inspiration, I hope the rest of us are as lucky soon

daisyhun - I hope you get sorted soon, but most specialists make you wait for a year before starting investigations - you'll probably have to have blood tests/hsg/SA done before Clomid is prescribed. I hope you get sorted soon, it's horrible being in limbo land TTC wise isn't it?

Good luck everyone

MeerkatsUnite · 20/09/2005 07:59

Roobedoo,

As a fellow PCOSer you have my sympathy. Its a real of a condition to have.

Did they feel the cyst was a result of overstimulation on the injectibles?. Will they now consider another treatment option?.

When are you due to see the cons. again?.

Sorry for all the questions but have been where you have re treatments and would like to help if at all possible.

It goes without saying that your "friend" needs to stop blabbing. How would she like it if she was in your position.

With best wishes

Meerkats

Roobedoo · 20/09/2005 21:05

The nurse said the cyst could be a result of the clomid or it could just be me, and I could have been producing cysts regularly and that is why my cycles are so long. Because this lot of clomid didn't work how we wanted they are not counting it in the 3 months' worth I have been prescribed, so I'll have another 2 months of clomid before seeing the consultant again.

I had a positive on an OPK yesterday so am hoping the cyst will pop. Certainly feeling more comfortable today.

Really need some BFPs on this thread don't we!

milesysgirl · 20/09/2005 22:15

i totally agree surely we are all in for a bit of luck sooner rather than later

OP posts:
ionaming · 20/09/2005 23:06

Hi everyone, not been around much these last couple of weeks - been stepping back a bit from the whole ttc lark as I've started to accept I'm not gonna get pregnant without fertility treatment now. Means I'm far less obsessed about it all, which has got to be good

Roobedoo, sorry to hear about your cyst - hope it goes away soon.

Loubie37......fingers crossed that you ovulate this month...

So no BFP's from anyone yet

I've got my doc's appointment tomorrow morning when I'll get my day 3 results back. My 21 day prog test was very low - only 2.0 (supposed to be 20 - 30 apparently). Doc says he won't prescribe clomid or progesterone or anything himself, so a referral will be next. Hope the wait isn't too long....

Catch up again soon....and hope that someone on this thread gets their BFP this month!

katierocket · 22/09/2005 09:34

hi all
sorry I've not been around much, like ionaming I've been trying to step back from it all. No news from me - 2nd month of Clomid hasn't worked but I have had horrible side effects of horrendous PMT and very black moods. It really does feel as though this is never going to happen, I know everyone says that but it doesn't make any sense. DP's sperm results came back as OK so not sure where we go from here - possibly IUI.
Sorry to hear about the cysts roobedo and shame on your 'friend' that is very insensitive. If I have one more person tell me about "so and so" who is pregnant I will scream!

take care everyone

LunarSea · 22/09/2005 13:44

any news on the results Iona? Day 3 of the clomid here - and I haven't turned into a raving loony monster yet! Hopefully it is going to have some impact as the last 2 cycles have only been 18 days each.
