Madigan - I was prescribed clomid even though i was ovulating normally. Dh and I had been ttc for 18m when I got it - to give my system a boost more than anything, i think.

Didn't agree with me though - I developed blood-filled custs on my ovaries which set me back in my treatment a while. I was one of the unlucky ones who had a bad reaction to them. It did work though - when I was being tracked I had a few eggs on the go two months in a row but then came off it because of the cysts (which took 4 months to go incidentally!). In the end got pg naturally, 10 days before ivf was due to start.

I would think that clomid to help kick-start ovulation (like with milesygirl) is its ideal use.

milesysgirl - I'm in Warwickshire. Talk about a postcode lottery

its such a shame ...

lunarsea .. I had the same from my GP

I was too old (35) already had a child, hence they won't refer to me

HOWEVER .. I spoke to a friend who was a nurse at a local hospital, who spoke to the manager of the acu (assisted conception unit) who told me to go back to doctor and tell them to write a referral letter for the initial tests / consultation and that if IVF etc was required we would fund that ourselves (not that we could)

he wrote the letter .. we had a couple of tests and a couple of appointments with consultant who identified problem (short post luteal phase .. I do ovulated but clomid was used to boost my system) and I conceived DD

I'm just saying .. don't give up .. because if I had I wouldn't have DD

good luck

Twiglett - sadly I've already tried that tack, and he's not budging an inch. If necessary I'd be prepared to pay for the initial assessment, even though I don't think we should have to, and then seeing where we could go from there. But even that apparently still needs a referral letter, and GP has said that we won't get one unless we can convince him that we have the spare funds to see it through to the end of a worse case scenario ("at least £50k" according to GP) - which of course we haven't.

Twiglett · 01/08/2005 18:23

.. I would find an alternative GP (how dare he say you have to prove your financial status to him .. what an @rse he sounds)

also get in contact with your local NHS bods .. god I wish I could remember the name Patient's charter or something and see what they say

katierocket · 01/08/2005 18:35

bloody hell lunarsea, that's outrageous.
we've been TTC no 2 for 14 months and GP was happy to refer us to NHS for the the initial tests. We actually decided to go private since if we need treatment we won't be able to get it on the NHS and the waiting lists even for initial tests is really long. Seeing the consultant on wed for the 'verdict'.

I used clomid after 2 yrs of trying for #2. I conceived on the second month but sadly miscarried. I started on clomid again and conceived again in the second month. This time my pg was a success and I have my lovely baby dd. I think it can work brilliantly. For me the side effects were weight gain (immediate and most unwelcome) and some horrid mood swings around ov time. It was well worth the trouble though! Good luck.

I've just been prescribed Clomid and I am quite nervous about taking it. (picture myself swallowing first tablet then waiting for head to start spinning round)

Question: Do you have to be monitored whilst on it? My consultant has just given me a prescription for it and said take it for 3 months and see but a lot of posts on MN suggest you have to monitored?

LunarSea · 03/08/2005 12:09

Glad something positive is happening for you katie [smail] - but too.

LunarSea · 03/08/2005 12:10

That was meant to be of course!

katierocket · 03/08/2005 12:13

thanks lunar, how are things with you?

I am quite surprised at how scared I am about taking Clomid.

Roobedoo · 03/08/2005 13:35

Katierocket - I'm not stalking you btw! Just saw your comment re monitoring - I have a pelvic scan next week to see how many eggs are going to pop. If I have between 1 and 4 they'll give me an injection to release the eggs, then we have 24-36 hrs of bd to look forward to! If there are more than 4 they won't give me an injection and we're not even allowed to hold hands!

LunarSea · 03/08/2005 13:41

katie - still heading down a dead end at the moment. dh has emailed a friend whose wife is a GP in a town near us, to see if she might know of any other GP's in our area who are likely to be more sympathetic, so if anything comes of that I'll try changing GP.

Moomin · 03/08/2005 14:22

katierocket - you really should be tracked, even if only for the 1st month. This is to make sure you don't produce too many eggs which is rare but can happen. I had visions of pruducing frog spawn and appearing in the news of the world with 10 babies at once! But seriously, I wouldn't have known it was causing me to have blood-filled cysts if I hadn't been tracked each month. IIRC, you should be having a scan at around day 13ish of your cycle, just before they 'pop'. hope clomid does the trick for you x

katierocket · 03/08/2005 16:23

cripes, I'm a bit scared now as consultant has just said to go away and take it. I did phone to check, spoke to nurse there and she said they only normally monitor if it's part of IVF, or other treatment. Not sure whether or not to phone them back again and ask about a scan, think i will.

katierocket · 03/08/2005 16:24

LUnar - I feel for you. I think changing your GP is definitely the way forward.

katierocket · 03/08/2005 16:25

one last question! is the scan a normal one or a transvaginal one?

cutekids · 03/08/2005 16:27

I took Clomid for a year before I conceived.Only side-effects I can remember are the hot-flushes. Apart from that, all was fine. I suppose it just depends on the woman's body. By the way, it certainly did something for mine....I conceived three months after my first child and three months after my second!!!! I certainly got my money's worth of Clomid!!! (had to pay as we lived in Ireland at the time.)

Moomin · 03/08/2005 17:58

This was before we even mentioned ivf; just part of our ongoing fertility treatment and investigations. It was a vag scan. I had extensive intimate knowledge of my consultant's scanning wand by the end of the year!

Twiglett · 03/08/2005 18:00

katierocket .. I wasn't monitored .. what dosage did they put you on?

katierocket · 03/08/2005 19:06

50mg, twice a day.

Twiglett · 03/08/2005 19:11

oh that's quite low .. I wouldn't worry too much about monitoring (at least that's what I was told by King's .. I was on 50mg)

katierocket · 03/08/2005 22:08

thanks twig, good to hear. The consultant (who is spoken quite highly of I believe) didn't even mention it as an issue but then when I looked at some of the threads on here I was a bit worred.

Note: no sign of 2 stone weight gain and full beard yet but will reserve judgement until the morning.
