TTC over 40 - anyone want to join the club?

Hello lovely Mumsnetters,

Mum to one toddler. Aged 42 and just got AF in first cycle TTC. Just read some of the (depressing) statistics on my age and fertility and feeling a bit glum. Thought maybe having a lovely bunch of online buddies in a similar position would be just the tonic for me and hopefully others too. Does anyone fancy joining the club?

Please can anyone help. I have set up an individual post but people don't tend to comment so just thought I'd ask on here as people have been so open.

We are awaiting our referral appointment but in the meantime I've had private tests, but I don't fully understand and the doctors notes are daily basic.

AMH results normal for my age.
Progesterone - all fine.
LH - all fine.
FSH - very high
Oestradiol- very low.

I wondered if anyone has any experience with similar results who can tell me if I'm right in thinking it's game over with those last two results? I'm heartbroken and could just do with hearing anyones experiences before I suppose I have it fully confirmed at the awaited appointment.

winterfox78 · 01/07/2022 13:08

@EnnaMc how old are you?
What exactly did the doctor say? What would be the next step.

Sorry I can't help. I don't understand what those results mean.

I'm trying for our second ....I'm turning 44 soon.

Trying naturally.

winterfox78 · 04/07/2022 07:39

🙃 thinking it's not going to happen...trying to stay positive.

I'm using ovulation sticks, Clearblue ones. I've had the flashing smiley face from day 10...so don't know if that's positive at least.

Trying to stay calm and chill

How are you doing? Try not too stress too much (easier said than done I know!) Some day's definitely seem harder than others right?!

Unfortunately this is around my fertile window (first month using the test strips for ovulation so trying to navigate reading them and not stressing out) and my partner is out and busy with work 😬but figured kind of good practice to know when ovulating....

winterfox78 · 07/07/2022 06:56

@Perexi I think I'm out for this cycle...
I'm day 18 of cycle. I'm a 24 day cycle on average.
Feel emotional and have bloating like a tightness across my stomach....so im sure I'll be expecting AF in a minute!

I did a few more ovulation strips this month....still trying to pinpoint the exact ovulation day but strips have indicated from day 10...but I DTD up to day 15...

Maybe im way out.

So much easier when we were TTC my first!!! 7 months it took but I was 39 then...

Anyone have any positive pregnant at 44 stories 😶

Perexi · 17/07/2022 20:33

I did an early test and I think maybe I got a positive....its still early as not due until Thursday or Friday

Could I join please? I'm 40 and DH is 43, trying for our first. This will be our first month TTC. I came off the pill quite some time ago but (one of) but our issue is my DH has a health condition and so hasn't really been feeling well and we haven't been DTD. I always wanted to remain v relaxed about this but age is absolutely not on our side and I'm getting anxious we need to start trying for this properly. Have been tracking cycle, which is regular, but thinking I should use ovulation tests too and take the right supplements.

Hello @Lemonyfuckit - I'm 40 and trying for second for 7 months (on and off). I got pregnant on first month trying at 37 and had my little boy at 38. This time doesn't seem so easy but had a lot of health complications in the last two years. I had a early miscarriage in June and we didn't try in July as I had to have some MRI scans.. I'm in the two week wait now, but not that hopeful 😬

Aprilsunnyday · 04/08/2022 09:46

Hi ladies, I have been a bit quiet on and off on Mumsnet in the past few months but coming back, especially to this thread. @Lemonyfuckit , I am in really similar boat, i am 40 and DH 43 and we are trying for our first. We had a miscarriage early in the year and only starting to try from this month after everything returned to normal and work became less stressful!! (not always easy to have the right environment to try!)
@jalu47 sorry to hear you had a miscarriage in June, thats still very recent - it is never easy, but worth making the effort!!
@Perexi Good luck on this sticking through!
Hopefully towards the end of the year we have some good luck and good news, and so for everyone on this thread. :)! xx

Aprilsunnyday · 04/08/2022 11:01

@EnnaMc, i am sorry i think maybe people weren't following this thread earlier. I don't have much clue to the different levels on hormones unfortunately and not able to help but did you get some answers afterwards? I hope you are less worried and feeling better at least!x

Lotus1702 · 04/08/2022 16:13

Hi all haven’t read everything but wanted to quickly say Don’t buy too much into what you read online about age blah blah blah I’m 43 was not trying but dtd once cycle day 11 app told me I’ll be o on day 13 got my BFP on Saturday.

I know many who have gotten pregnant in their 40’s oldest being 46 it’s a myth I tell you best to stay away from statistics ✨✨

appleaday12 · 05/08/2022 12:18

@Lotus1702 congrats! Is this your first?

I'm 44, trying for second. Using Ovia and Flo app. OPK's and trying to stay calm!!

I don't drink and Keeping active running about after a 3 year old 😁

41hon · 05/08/2022 18:55

I just got a bfp yesterday for my 2nd. I'm 41. So nervous though about everything being OK. My first child is 8 so we didn't have much luck for 7 years!

Luluellen77 · 05/08/2022 20:01

Hi Everyone, hoping I can join this thread please.
Not really sure which topic to post in, I’m over 40 (actually it’s my 45th Birthday today 🎉)
Been trying for last couple of years for my 2nd.
I had my DD aged 42 after 6 miscarriages. I was under the recurrent miscarriage clinic and went on a trial for progesterone after BFP. This attempt worked and resulted in my little girl who will be 3 in November.
We have such a small family, no grandparents we both lost parents early. My OH is 39 and we are both fit and healthy. I have hypothyroidism but it’s low and under control with medication.
Guess I’m just worried with my history if I do get a BFP that I’ll just lose it without progesterone. Can’t go back to the clinic because I haven’t had any more MC and also they might not accept me because of my age.
Periods are shorter now (25-27 days) used to be 31 and I ovulate regularly around day 13/14.
Any suggestions for supplements I could take to help luteal phase and increase my progesterone?
Thanks in advance x

jalu47 · 08/08/2022 20:45

Is anyone else trying acupuncture? I had about 6 sessions and going for another round. My friend had great success with it.

Had a blood test today to check my hormones so hoping that all comes back normal..

Aprilsunnyday · 08/08/2022 21:48

@jalujalu47 wow that's amazing for your friend I am very interested in acupuncture!! But not tried!! Would you recommend? Is it expensive?
I'd like to regulate my cycle with the help as it's a bit unpredictable now! 😂

jalu47 · 10/08/2022 14:14

@Aprilsunnyday it's about £60 a session where i'm going so it's pricey but I do feel there are other things to explore before going for fertility treatment. Stress management is a massive one for me . I've started doing yin yoga as well - super chilled, basically stretching but I feel amazing after and always sleep well. Healthy mind and body first is what I've been trying to achieve.

Also my acupuncture lady has suggested an app called Yuka - its easy to scan food and beauty products for stuff that is in them and it gives you a rating of bad to good. There are lots of 'endocrine disruptors' out there so can help avoid anything that might mess with your hormones a bit..

Won’t the GP just put you on progesterone if you get pregnant and need it? Mine did.

Aprilsunnyday · 10/08/2022 19:26

@jalu47, yes you are doing all the right things to relax and get rid of stress. It is a great effort and please keep at it!!
Same for me, stress can be very clearly felt and interferes with cycles even... :(
Work stress was so bad in June July that my cycle got delayed for 18 days. (I had a change of manager and things changed a lot!)
I do try to take some odd days off now and then and try to listen to a bit of hypnosis audio here and there in the mornings. I hope all efforts help for us and everyone!

motheroreily · 10/08/2022 19:39

Hi please can I join. I'm 40 and had a child when I was 30. Do you recommend any vitamins or anything?

jalu47 · 11/08/2022 11:30

Hi all - I got the results of my (private) blood tests today and they seem fine (FSH, LH, prolactin etc) apart from my testosterone is a bit low and my SHBG is also a bit low. Has anyone else had these bloods? I got them through my acupuncturist so she's going to interpret them a bit - interested to hear of other experiences.

Perexi · 11/08/2022 13:49

Hi everyone, glad to see this thread become a bit more active! Vitamin wise all I took was folic acid and vitamin d although I have now switched to a pregnancy vitamin.... it's a minefield so I wasn't sure what was best but as long as taking something!

Still early days for me but hit 7 weeks pregnant yesterday and boy the nausea has hit

applegrumbles · 11/08/2022 16:22

Hi everyone. I’m 41 and TTC for the first time. I thought it would never be possible due to some health issues which have now improved enough for me to come off my (very harmful in pregnancy) medication and I’m hoping it’s not too late.

I already take folic acid and vitamin D as I was prescribed them years ago due to deficiency. Not sure whether to just stick with these or start taking pregnacare or similar instead.

I know NOTHING about TTC as I never thought I’d be able to. Coming off the Pill after many years too. Plan to just try for a couple of months and then start actively charting ovulation etc.

It’s probably too late for us but you never know right?!
