TTC over 40 - anyone want to join the club?

Hello lovely Mumsnetters,

Mum to one toddler. Aged 42 and just got AF in first cycle TTC. Just read some of the (depressing) statistics on my age and fertility and feeling a bit glum. Thought maybe having a lovely bunch of online buddies in a similar position would be just the tonic for me and hopefully others too. Does anyone fancy joining the club?

Thanks @BecauseICan22 - I tested positive on the first day of missed period and and then for the next 4/5 days. Lines got a bit darker but now 9 days late and tests are pretty negative but no sign of bleeding. Im not sure if it might be more a MMC.. I think I'll have to speak to doctor or early pregnancy unit next week if nothing has happened as not sure if I might need something to help it pass.

I'm so sad but also just want it to be over and look forward to the next cycle.

Hi all, can I join your club please? I think I am a little older than most of you at aged 44. Have been TTC our third child for exactly a year now but nothing happening yet

Starry77 · 09/06/2022 22:12

Hi everyone, can I please join? I’m 40 and we are TTC our second, just been trying a couple of months as our Daughter has just turned 15 months. AF is currently 2 days late but my cycle can vary a day here or there. Did a few tests last few days all looked negative except today I think there is a faint line but didn’t test until afternoon. I’ll try again first thing tomorrow I think.

BecauseICan22 · 12/06/2022 08:05

Morning ladies, I'm officially 1 day late on my period. Attached is last night's test. I'm nervous about the sitting and waiting now. It's that thing of wanting to know that everything is ok.

I hope the pregnancy is progressing fine so far! @BecauseIcan22, it is great your body is trying and you got pregnant a couple times since February! Fingers crossed. :)

Thank you =) So far we are I think fine, I'll be 5 weeks tomorrow and then next week I have an early scan at EPU (6 weeks) to see what's happening.

I think the only concern I have is I don't seem to have a lot of symptoms. I pee'd on a Clearblue which dated me at 2-3 weeks but I know my dates inside out and I'm definitely almost 5 weeks. I'm also not seeing the second line darken fast when taking a normal test so I'm wondering if this all means low HcG meaning a failing pregnancy - I'm trying not to think about it and will hold on until my scan but it's like I'm almost expecting the worst.

Sorry about the huge brain dump, I appreciate your message and I hope whatever journey you're on, it's going well :)

@BecauseICan22,

I see!! Thanks for the sharing.
I agree, the hcg level seems a bit low for 5 weeks perhaps, but it's still a bit early, I think you are doing the right thing!! wait till the scan next week to see how the fetus is developing. All the best luck.

I had a missed miscarriage earlier in the year, it took a while to recover, and I am 40 years old so just being aware of the fact things like this are normal!
I hope you don't feel anxious too much and able to do your everyday life as normal before the hospital appointment!

How did it go with your testing:)? Any good luck this month? I think a faint line is very positive given you ve only tried a couple months!

Me please!

Only recently signed up here. I'm 40 and we are trying for our first, it's our first month trying and reading here it's an absolute minefield! I have been tracking my cycles for a few years but no idea if should be tracking more etc was kind of hoping it would just happen but I know the stats aren't on our side. Crossing everything.

I am in very similar boat with you! Turned 40 too and trying for our first. Have you tested Amh and such to have some ideas? Mine is really low so no chance of ivf, can only depend on the odds of natures I feel!!
How are you doing in general?

Muppetryofthepenis · 18/06/2022 20:01

It's hard going. I'm 41 and a half and been trying for number 2 for a few years. Probably unrealistic that it would happen now but you never know!

Perexi · 18/06/2022 21:44

No I haven't tested for anything yet, kind of hoping it will just happen as I didn't want to stress about it. My partner is a bit younger than me 36 so hopefully that will help! Just coming to the end of the first cycle trying, I don't feel any different to any other month so did buy some ovulation tests to try and be a bit more accurate for cycle two. I guess knowing amh would help know chances but wouldn't change anything so will hold off for a while and try having fun trying for a couple of cycles at least.

Fingers crossed! I guess you know you can get pregnant together if 2nd.... Its such a minefield after spending most my adult life being very sensible with contraception!

Muppetryofthepenis · 19/06/2022 10:10

@Perexi absolutely it's a minefield. Thank you - it's such a roller coaster of emotions.

Muppetryofthepenis · 19/06/2022 10:14

And good luck! Fertility is different for everyone so keep trying.

@Yoyoathome it was positive, did a CB digital the next day. According to my last period I am 5w5d today. Feeling great - I didn’t have any symptoms with my first pregnancy until around 8 weeks so enjoying this while it lasts 😂 how are you getting on?

Yoyoathome · 19/06/2022 16:29

@Starry77
That is amazing news!! Congratulations to you and your partner😀
Hope you really enjoy this time and don't get morning sickness etc too!
Hope we all get your baby dust too! 😉

@Yoyoathome thank you! Still can’t believe it some days 😁 I hope you get your BFP soon too. 🤞

Muppetryofthepenis · 20/06/2022 12:59

Congratulations! Great news!

Muppetryofthepenis · 20/06/2022 13:00

Quick question - if I'm throwing everything at this in terms of natural pregnancy, what supplements do you recommend? Figure even if I don't conceive, vitamins won't harm me!

winterfox78 · 20/06/2022 13:13

@anewbook hello! I'm turning 44 in August. TTC number 2, we have been trying for 4 months..
Had DD two weeks after I tuned 40, took 7 months of trying.
I'm taking Blackmores conceive tablets ...cut out alcohol months ago. Watching diet - bar the odd chocolate 😊
Running around after an active 4 year old keeps you fit!

Good luck everyone

anewbook · 20/06/2022 13:52

@winterfox78
thank you!
you have given me a little ray of hope.
Been trying for No.1 for years and am trying to mentally prepare myself that it may never happen… but am not quite ready to call it a day yet. Fingers crossed for everyone 🤞🏾 🌈

winterfox78 · 21/06/2022 00:54

@anewbook just to check...I'm sure you have....but as you have been trying for a year, it's maybe worth having a check up and some tests? Your partner too.

Before I had DD...both my DH and I had blood tests and general well being tests. DH also had his sperm tested. All came back fine... and we were actually pregnant the month we did them!! So 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

I did also have an ultrasound ( I think or similar) to see if my womb was healthy and it showed how many follicles I had on each ovary.
I remember the lady who did the scan said - you've got a very dominant follicle on your left - get down to business this weekend !!! Haha!!

Let me know how you go.
Baby dust to us all

winterfox78 · 21/06/2022 00:56

Just to add we didn't know we were pregnant at the time ...we did the tests and during the wait for results fell pregnant!
