Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@MintGreenLife my OH would die ha - he's just not as up for DTD as he was 10 years ago lol. It usually takes him a good 10 days to recover from FW!

I don't really eat breakfast so would be a faff for me to try and squeeze the seeds in during the day. Plus buying them, remembering which ones to take when and how much - I just don't have the mental capacity for it atm. Not to mention I track my calories and the thought of giving something else up just fit some seeds in upsets me haha.

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 10:26

@Juno231 oh that's so funny! My OH is the other around in that he can't handle going several days in the week, but is quite happy to keep going every other day all month. He's two years younger than me though, so maybe that's why ha!

Ah fair enough. I'm lucky in that I work from home so things like that are quite easy for me. Haha there's probably a fair few calories in just a tablespoon of seeds a day! Didn't even think of that! I'll probably get to September and realise I can't fit into my 'non-wedding' wedding dress five days before and have to blame it on the seeds ha.

@MintGreenLife Oh no, they sound horrible and leave you feeling so unrefreshed in the morning as you feel that your mind just hasn’t rested. Hope the workout done the trick, if anything it will get those endorphins going around 😊

Yaaay! Aw, that’s super exciting. Fingers crossed it stays high. Loving the fact you’ve moved onto sunflower seeds, I’m going to look into that now as I think it sounds like a good idea and also a good way of getting more healthy food into my diet xx

@Juno231 I also use the Femometer OPKs – can I ask you a question about them? I got a peak on Saturday morning (CD13) with the strips and also the clear blue digital and then really bad pain on my right side that evening so I’m guessing that’s when I ovulated or at least tried to.
I then took another test in the evening on the strips and it had gone down to high. Do you know if it went down to high as the egg had been released from the surge of hormones in the morning? I just can't believe I nearly missed it, it all happened within 12 hours. I didn't seem to get that 4 day warning of a peak coming, it literally went high, peak, high. I think I’m just over thinking as it’s my first month off the pill and just trying to watch every sign I get.

So helpful to have you all to ask these questions to! My OH would look at me like 'Huuuh' Grin xx

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 11:19

@Flowerkm I felt like I could hardly move yesterday as felt so rubbish, so that probably didn't help. Fingers crossed a workout and generally being busy today will mean I sleep better tonight!

I'm not feeling entirely hopeful about the temp shift as I still have EWCM! Guess we should keep DTD and hopefully the next couple of days temps stay high. I can't recall where I heard about seed cycling, I think it was a podcast, but there's lots of info online about it :) the only thing I will say is that a book I just read did say something about flax seed and how something in it (that is also in soy) can inhibit ovulation, and flax seed is one of the seeds you have up until ovulation. I was having it everyday along with pumpkin seeds, but then what this book said worried me, so I'm having a lot less now! x

@Flowerkm I think the LH surges just vary from woman to woman and sometimes cycle by cycle! Some only have a peak for 4h so can be easy to miss - I think mine are really short. I basically go high around noon - peak in the afternoon and back to Low the following day. That's why I tend to test 2-3 times a day when I think ovulation is near! Nothing weird or unusual though so don't worry :)

Flowerkm · 23/07/2020 14:07

@MintGreenLife Aw bless you, it’s important to listen to your body so if you want to rest, just rest.
That’s it, keep DTD and you never know. Your body is really trying to do something here so it’s still really good signs. I’ve had a look and it does seem good, I’ll keep the flax seed in mind though.

@Juno231 Thank you, I did think that but where I’ve thought so much about it I was just going around in circles, I think testing a few times a day really helps and luckily where I’m working from home this is easily done 😊 xx

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 16:47

@Flowerkm I always feel like I'm going into way to much detail ha, but i checked my cervix late this morn and it's super low, like the lowest I've ever felt it, compared to high yesterday, so another positive sign I have possibly ovulated. Will have a little rest from DTD for now then!

I like with seed cycling how easy is, and inexpensive :) I just get the seeds and flax etc with my weekly shop at Aldi, and it's all good stuff so shouldn't do any harm...apart from now I'm wary of flaxseed ha. Think I'll carry on with it next cycle, but maybe just use a bit less flax x

Flowerkm · 23/07/2020 17:01

@MintGreenLife Haha! Don’t worry about TMI its nice to have somewhere to openly talk about it, we’re all going through the same. Ill add to it though, my nipples are still ridiculously sore at the moment, when does it stop.🙈
Thats another really good sign, is this cycle the most signs you’ve had of ovulation? Plus you’ve been DTD regularly so fingers crossed!

Thats it, its just something easy to follow that has so many benefits chucked in as well xx

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 17:09

@Flowerkm haha thanks, I do wonder sometimes how much is disclosing too much, but then we are all doing these things and looking for these signs, so why not talk about it with each other! It's not like I can talk about CM or my cervix position with OH, eek!

Oh god I had that my last two cycles towards the end but nothing nipple-wise so far, so horrible though! Even just the water from the shower on them is like urgh. How far off AF coming now do you think you are? Did you say you were thinking maybe the 3rd of August?

Yes and no - last cycle I did get a peak OPK and EWCM, but I didn't notice my cervix position changing. Also last cycle I did get a small temp rise for three days, like literally just above the coverline, but then AF came on the fourth day and I had the sore nipples last cycle too, so whether that was ovulation and a super short luteal phase or not I'm really not sure. My temp rise was much bigger today though, plus EWCM and an almost positive OPK, as well as cervical changes, so does seem a bit more positive. I'm totally going to be anxious to see what my BBT will be tomorrow! xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 23/07/2020 17:23

@MintGreenLife Exactly! If we can’t talk on here about it then where can we? 😂 yeah, the showers the worst! Yep, Im due 2nd August so hoping its on time and can start properly DTD and actively trying.
Haha! Can you imagine what they’d say, they’d probably think we’re crazy. He’s very much it will happen when it happens...i don’t think he quite understands the different stages I have to be in 🙈

That all sounds really promising though, your body is showing all the signs its doing the right things. This month sounds like its doing more at around the same time which is great! How important is it to have a high cervix? I don’t think I really checked properly to know what mine was doing xx

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 17:39

@Flowerkm so true, I will share away then ha. Brilliant, bet you can't wait! That seems like ages away right now, but hopefully it'll fly by :) oh god yeah they totally don't get how complex it actually is and how many things need to line up for it to happen, it's no wonder it can take a while!

Yeah I mean if nothing else I should probably be pleased that my body is at least having a good go! I'm not sure to be honest, from what I understand it should be high and soft during the fertile week, and then after ovulation comes back down low again until AF arrives, or if you've conceived it goes back up high again, but not until like 8DPO onwards, or until implantation occurs I think. It's tricky as I think the differences are quite subtle, so it's a case of getting used to your own body. I didn't think I felt any difference last cycle, whereas this cycle for the last week or so (maybe longer as I think my body was trying to ovulate for about two weeks!) my cervix has been high and straight if that makes sense. So up until this morn it was a whole finger length away (sounds horrible, no idea how else to describe!) and now i can reach it by just inserting up to my first knuckle and it's tilted, and that's the lowest I've ever felt it. If you google there are some good images that show the cervical differences throughout the cycle :) xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 23/07/2020 18:57

@MintGreenLife I hope it does too! I very much doubt our one hit wonder on ovulation day has worked so looking forward to just trying now and hoping i fall back into a nice little cycle.

Thank you, think Im understanding it a but now and it goes with what Ive read online and on here. Ill have a little google and see what comes up.
Yeah, that makes sense, there all positive signs. Im going to have to get used to it i think. Hopefully now your body has had so many signs its trying or has ovulated your next cycle will be a lot clearer ☺️

MintGreenLife · 23/07/2020 19:44

@Flowerkm well you never know ☺️ I don't think I'll even be a teeny bit hopeful until I'm a few days when I know whether I actually ovulated or not, but if I did we DTD the day before ovulation and three days before, so could be in with a chance.

I think once you get used to checking your cervix it gets easier to figure out the signs. I check mine every day when I get out the shower. Oh god I really hope so! I'm going to carry on with the detox and start again tomorrow, so hopefully that coupled with lots of positive signs this cycle will get me back on track 🤞🏼 Xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 24/07/2020 09:01

@MintGreenLife That’s plenty of DTD, if anything it’s just really good practise! I want my OH to feel wanted other times of the month as well, not just the few days where I really need him!

Fingers crossed 😊 how are you feeling today, did you sleep a bit better? xx

MintGreenLife · 24/07/2020 09:06

@Flowerkm morning ☺️ Slept a bit better but not brilliantly, not sure what's going on. Going to blame it on hormones along with everything else 😂

My temp dropped back down again! There is something called a fallback rise which can happen around 2DPO, but to be honest I'm just clutching at straws now. Hoping I see higher temps the next few days, but am going to assume I probably didn't ovulate. My temp was actually super low - 35.99, and in my sleepy state I thought it said 36.99 so got really excited for a moment until I looked at it properly 🙄 How are you today? I'm happy it's Friday to be honest, so there is a positive today ha x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 24/07/2020 10:12

@MintGreenLife Ah no, yeah it’s probably a mixture of everything going on and the mind going into overdrive. I was going to say lack of sleep is the worst but then thought about why we’re on this thread and that’s TTC which results in a baby which brings no sleep so I take that back!...

Well you never know, it rose for a reason and that brings a positive in itself that your body is really giving it a go.

I’m all good today, thank you for asking 😊 also glad it’s Friday, looking forward to a cheeky Domino’s tonight and just completed a Joe Wicks workout lol his workouts fit in really well as they’re quite short but full on!
It’s funny actually, I really feel this month has gone quick, I’m sure it will go slower next month when I’m thinking more about DTD and properly TTC, guess I just need to keep busy xx

Juno231 · 24/07/2020 12:03

@MintGreenLife that's a sharp dip! Maybe today is ovulation day? Only time and FF can tell!

Still getting pretty low OPKs tbh - I only scored 21% on one this morning. Was fully expecting a peak today but now I'm not so sure! Maybe I'll ovulate later this cycle and add to my ever expanding variety of cycle timings (seeing as CD16 has been the latest but also the most frequent ovulation day since Jan).

Juno231 · 24/07/2020 12:03

Oops - probably should have clarified I'm on CD15 today!

MintGreenLife · 24/07/2020 12:16

@Flowerkm haha that's very true! This will be the norm (or possibly even worse) in the future!

I'm trying not to jump to any conclusions, will have to see what the next few days of temps are like. I'm CD38 now though, so surely if I'm not going to ovulate AF will come soon?!

Oh so jealous of the dominos! I'm whitening my teeth for our wedding and they are so sore today. Am feeling a bit sorry for myself and like I want to eat comfort food, but know that it'll just be painful and unenjoyable 🙄 Well done on the workout! I haven't done anything yet, but think I will do a lunch time yoga session in hope it'll help me sleep later. You say that, but even though I've got to CD38 and have been waiting all that time for ovulation, it's still gone fairly quickly. You'd think it would drag! X

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 24/07/2020 15:16

@MintGreenLife It should be soon shouldn’t it? Keep an eye on the temps over the next few days and hopefully AF shows up and then a brand new cycle to watch 😊

Oohh how is the teeth whitening going? I’ve always wanted to try but so nervous as I have heard it can be painful/sensitive.
Yeah, I know what you mean, time is a weird thing!!

@Juno231 you never know that could peak by this evening/tomorrow morning, especially if tomorrow CD16, so fingers crossed xx

MintGreenLife · 24/07/2020 17:33

@Juno231 I'm probably being pessimistic but I've given up on ovulating this cycle 🙈 Given that it's almost CD40 now! I'm kind of still hoping I ovulated a couple of days ago and today was a fallback rise, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. I'm sure I'll feel better in a day or two and will get back on DTD just in case.

From what I understand ovulation can be delayed for a number of reasons, so hopefully you'll ovulate in a day or two ☺️ If not don't worry too much, sure it'll come soon. I've stopped OPKs for now but I might start again in a few days time if my temp doesn't go up again tomorrow or AF doesn't come x

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 24/07/2020 17:41

@Flowerkm sure I'll have another temp report tomorrow morning for you 😂

Umm not great so far to be honest! You're right to be fearful of the pain/sensitivity 🙈 I've hardly been able to eat today after just two nights with the whitening gel on. It's quite strong stuff though as I got it from the dentists, whereas I think if you used the stips that you get from boots or whatever you wouldn't get the same sensitivity, but not as good results either. My teeth are obviously whiter already, but I'm going to have to take a mini break now as can't carry on while they are this painful! In total though I only need to use the gel 7-10 nights, so hopefully I'll be done in a couple of weeks. It's the second time I've done it - last time was about 5 years ago, I don't remember it being this painful though! Think the percentage of strength must be higher this time as I also don't recal seeing results so quickly either! Xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 24/07/2020 20:41

@MintGreenLife yes please! Keep me posted :)

Oh no 🙈🙈 that sounds so painful. Its that catch 22 isn't it? Pain and good results or no pain and not as good lol
Sounds like its working though and 7-10 nights isn't too bad but it does sound sore! Xx

MintGreenLife · 24/07/2020 21:37

@Flowerkm I think I went a bit too hard on it to soon 😂 Hopefully it'll be less painful if I leave it on for a bit less time.

You've made me want a dominos by the way! Think we are going to get one tomorrow night assuming my teeth feel OK 😂 Hope you enjoyed yours this evening! Xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 25/07/2020 10:40

@MintGreenLife haa! Sorry but not sorry about that one! Dominos was soo good, their cookies are out of this world! Hope you decide to get one if your teeth feel ok 😀

How are you today? X
