Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Elsie2021 I was similar in that my first cycle was 30 days, so I was thrilled thinking I was back on track right away, but it turned out I had a very short luteal phase of just a few days - that happened for my first two cycles, and then third one I had a normal luteal phase which made my cycle 55ish days long 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think for now I'm not worrying too much, I've got too much going on to distract me from it. I guess it does just go through your mind doesn't it, like 'why me?' And makes you wonder if there's something bigger going on.

Let us know if you do decide to start TTC! See you were sensible coming off early. I was kind of thrown into this as we decided to TTC because it looked like our wedding would be postponed and so we didn't see the point in waiting, so I just came off the pill, waited until I had AF and then decided to get on with it. This is only our third cycle trying, but as it should have been 4/5 cycles by now feels a lot longer 🤦🏻‍♀️ Xx

@MintGreenLife I am pleased, still feel nervous though as I’ve read of people having nice cycles and then cycles that just get longer and longer each time. I’m just worrying over things that I shouldn’t even worry about. Just hoping when we TTC I’m still in this cycle but also preparing myself to see some changes as that’s totally expected.

I think a call to the GP would be fine after 6 months, especially if it can help put your mind at ease. It already sounds like you are having good signs this cycle though which is all happening a little earlier than last. Hopefully you see a rise in temp this week :D
xx

@lalababy2 Welcome 😊 good luck on your journey and please keep us posted xx

Juno231 · 27/08/2020 09:34

@MintGreenLife I think calling the GP sounds like a good idea too! How are the signs today?

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 09:45

@Flowerkm I've read similar, but I feel like you might be OK?! I totally get that it's hard not to worry though. Fingers crossed you will continue with a nice normal length cycle, and you've already learnt how to pinpoint ovulation perfectly, so think you'll be in with a good chance to catch fairly quickly! I think 6 months is a fair time to wait :) will leave it until we are back from our little Scottish honeymoon and see if they would be willing to do some bloods and a scan or something xx

@Juno231 Haven't had any EWCM yet today - I find that if I'm going to get it I don't tend to see it until late morning and then I'll have a big blob at once! My temps are much lower this cycle though, not sure if that means anything. Today was 36.02, yesterday 36.03 and day before 35.95. Lowest I've had is 35.75! They were sort of a bit up and down for the first 15 days and now seem to be staying low. How many DPO are you now? x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 27/08/2020 09:53

@MintGreenLife 4DPO today, 36.66 temp. I'm just eager to see what the TWW will look like temp and RHR wise, this first week is always boring in comparison. Got a letter yday calling me in for a pap smear - seems like everyone wants to see my foof nowadays. Think it'll be my sixth smear already!

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 09:57

@Juno231 haha, oh no! It's all going on, the things us girls have to put up with! I had mine late last year, so think I'm good for a while now, thank goodness! x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 27/08/2020 10:11

@MintGreenLife Aw, thank you. I hope so to. Just sending lots of luck and support to you. Your honeymoon sounds lovely, that will be just what you need, recharge yourselves :)

@Juno231 Haha, that made me giggle. I had my first one a year or two ago. I had to sit on my hands and tilt upwards as apparently i have a tilted cervix and she couldn't do what she needed to do?? It was sooo painful and i had spotting afterwards. Honestly though, that would never put me off going, I'd happily go back, it was like 15 seconds of being uncomfortable which is nothing really. Not putting anyone off! Everyone else i spoke to was like i didn't even realise she was doing it..guess I was just unlucky xx

Flowerkm · 27/08/2020 10:17

I'll just add she did manage to take the swab, just had to move around a bit to get there!

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 10:18

@Flowerkm that happened to me last time too! She couldn't find my cervix...whereas I've had 3+ smears/other examinations and they never had that issue before. To be fair I find mine is tilted at certain points throughout my cycle too, but I can always find it no problem ha. But yep, I had to do the same, put my hands under my bump and lift up to help her out ha. I'm fairly certain on that occasion she was up in there for a good couple of mins...but all my other ones were speedy and fine :) xx

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 10:18

Hands under my bum! Not my bump...wish I had a bump haha x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 27/08/2020 10:19

@Flowerkm yeah mine have always been fine! And I do value them as I had one 3-4 years ago that came back with precancer cells so had to have a colposcopy and LEEP procedure to have them removed. Apparently that puts me at a higher risk of pre-term labour now?

Flowerkm · 27/08/2020 10:38

@MintGreenLife Ah I'm glad i'm not alone. Haha, yep, she was like can you tilt up, i was dying inside but just kept saying to myself she does this all the time..it's fine!!
At least you've had other good ones, that's reassuring, I'm hoping she just caught me on a 'tilted day' lol

@Juno231 Oh wow, they are so important aren't they? I'm glad they managed to remove what they needed for you. I wonder if there are any precautions you can take to try and prevent pre-term labour.

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 10:44

@Juno231 awwww I didn't want to say as it's a sensitive subject, but I had to have the same!! I had my first smear at around 26, so five years ago, and it came back abnormal, so I then had to have a biopsy and then the same as you - a LEEP procedure. That's why I've had a lot of intervention up there ha. Frustratingly initially they thought they were grade 2 cells which is why they removed them, but after removing it turned out they were grade 1, so they actually wouldn't have removed them normally, just kept an eye on them, but it's better to be safe than sorry I guess.

I was told the same thing - that I'd be at higher risk of premature delivery now. I was told I would be classed as a 'high risk' pregnancy and kept a closer eye on. Hopefully it doesn't cause too many issues. I've done lots of googling to try and see if the procedure itself can cause problems and I don't think it does.

@Flowerkm I've actually just done a quick google and it does seem that a tilted cervix can be caused by scar tissue, which would make sense in my case, but not in yours xx

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 10:44

@Flowerkm also just FYI, apparently it's a normal abnormality and doesn't cause fertility issues - 1 in 4 women seem to have a tilted cervix/uterus :)

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 10:45

@Juno231 @Flowerkm apparently they can put a stitch in your cervix as you get into your third trimester to strengthen it if it may be an issue, so at least something can be done :)

Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 11:09

Morning ladies @MintGreenLife @Juno231 sorry to hear you've had abnormal cells before , a close friend has had the same at a high grade and was told the same but went on to have her baby full term 😊...I've recently had a smear in lockdown, not the nicest but so important!
Us ladies have all the troubles I'm defo coming back as a man 😂.
@Flowerkm sorry af showed but at least your on track with cycle 😊
I think my cycle is going the total opposite and going too short🙈
I'm 9dpo have cramps like af is about to start also alot more cm today I saw a tiny speck of blood first thing, now it's like a orange colour ( sorry tmi) I'm sure it will turn into af as boobs are not as sensitive today either and cramps are def noticeable.

Was really hoping was more on track this cycle...never mind what is meant to be will be 😊 x

Juno231 · 27/08/2020 11:16

@Pip1903 not gonna lie that sounds like implantation to me?! Unless you're not trying at the moment? I can never remember which of us are actively TTC vs just coming off the pill in anticipation of it.

Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 11:26

@Juno231 it did cross my mind but the cramps are def there and not faint, I will keep an eye on it 🤞
Also were ttc number 3...I've never experienced it before, although they are older now and ttc seemed so much easier before we were lucky and both happened very quickly. I'd never heard of opks before 🙈.
Also being older this time round my body has changed and I'm noticing symptoms I never had being younger!
It was a big decision for me and hubby to try for a 3rd but it's something weve always regretted not doing sooner so decided to go for it! We have put a limit on trying as were getting older and the age gap between the children will be fairly big now.
Here goes to hoping x

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 12:14

@Pip1903 ahh thanks :) that's good to know your friend didn't have any issues! I was thinking the same as @Juno231 but couldn't remember if you were actively TTC either! You never know. How long is your luteal phase usually? x

OP posts:
Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 12:26

@MintGreenLife last cycle was my first off pill finally ovulated cd 40 and af was cd53 ..so about right I think?
This cycle I got a higher reading on opk but not quite a peak same last month too, was hoping I might of missed it.
However since ovulation I've had terrible sore boobs x

Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 12:26

Not really sure what to make of it all but fingers crossed 🤞 x

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 12:30

@Pip1903 sounds exactly like my cycles, except my third off the pill as I had a short luteal phase first two, but same length and everything, plus the sore boobs! Well at least that's a good luteal phase. Do you think you'll test this cycle before AF is due, or just going to wait and see? x

OP posts:
Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 12:48

@MintGreenLife was thinking sunday maybe test as be 12dpo and depending wether my spotting turns into af.
I'm supposed to meet up tomorrow with friends for drinks bit worried now just incase. Maybe I'm over thinking it? Wouldnt want to risk anything . Does anyone here drink in tww? It could literally be just hormonal changes literally driving myself crazy x

Elsie2021 · 27/08/2020 13:01

@MintGreenLife @Juno231 sorry to hear about your abnormal smears. Must have been a scary time :( Just shows how important they are though. We are lucky that they are able to do something about it!

@Pip1903 fingers crossed for you! I wouldn’t drink if I was you, it’s just not worth the extra worry should you be lucky this month! You can still go out and have a nice time, just say you have a headache or feeling a bit sick?

I just did another OPK and it’s still at 0. (Although I took the picture a few times and I did get 17% once). I guess it has a lot to do with the lighting in the room when it’s low.

So frustrating.

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 13:23

@Pip1903 I know that @Juno231 will say don't worry about drinking in the TWW :) I worried about the same thing but say to myself if I reaaaally want a glass of wine I'll let myself have one, only one or two though. I guess as you have some signs you could get your BFP maybe it's down to personal preference and whether it'll make you worry too much?

I feel you @Elsie2021 I'm feeling really quite meh today. My OPKs are still super faint, my EWCM seems to be going back to more creamy. CD19 now 🙄 Think I'm going to be facing ovulation over our wedding weekend or even later. Later would be fine but annoying, over that weekend would possibly be a bit stressy but OH is convinced we will be able to DTD anyway. Honestly thought this cycle would be better but it's not living up to my expectations so far! X
