Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Morning! 2DPO here and temp shot up to 36.75 so I'm just waiting for tomorrow's temp to confirm ovulation. Managed to book a day 21 test at 9DPO for next week as unfortunately 7DPO is a Sunday and 8 DPO is the bank holiday Monday.

Got my foof ultrasound today so will be interested to see how that goes!

Morning ladies.

Well I am confused today. CD 25 and...EWCM... for the first time! OPKs have been stark white for the last few days. Maybe I didn't ovulate around CD12 (I knew that was too good to be true!) Will try another OPK later and see how I get on.

@Juno231 that made me laugh, foof is one of my mum's sayings 😂 hope it goes well 😊

Juno231 · 25/08/2020 09:52

@lawandgin ha I love foof! EWCM is a good sign at least, just a shame it's arrive this late! I guess otherwise you'd be 12DPO and expecting AF any day? Horrible to have to reset the TWW like that...

Flowerkm · 25/08/2020 10:06

Morning 😊

@Juno231 Good news on the temp rises and the blood tests. Haha, I’ve used foof before, I hope the ultrasound goes ok today.

@lawandgin I’m CD27 and AF was due today and nothing, not even a hint of a twinge..i had cramps over the weekend and was convinced I was coming on but I haven’t.
I had such a nice cycle last month so hoping she comes today or tomorrow. Worst thing is I’m so impatient as this time last cycle I was already 3 days into my AF so I’ve convinced myself I’m going to be waiting forever for her.
We haven’t been actively trying this cycle, we DTD once on OD so I did take a sneaky pregnancy test and it was stark white (which i expected but ruled it out) so just a waiting game now for AF..

MintGreenLife · 25/08/2020 10:11

@Juno231 chart is looking good so far :) I seem to have the teeniest bit of EWCM, but not loads so not too sure what's going on.

Hope the ultrasound goes well, let us know how you get on. Good news about the bloods too, I've completely forgotten it's a bank holiday weekend, think I'll be working to be honest! x

@Flowerkm ahh it's annoying waiting, but I would say it's probably a good thing she hasn't come yet as means a longer LP :) keep us up to date! x

Hi ladies Good luck @Juno231 with your ultrasound.
My boobs are still so tender now 7dpo/8dpo
Last month only lasted until 3dpo, at first I thought possibly my mind playing tricks on me but no they definitely sore esp this morning dtd 🙈 (move away from the boobs 😂).
Does anyone else have this symptom up until af?
Do I have a glimmer of hope?
@Flowerkm could it be too early to test? They say still if with a chance until af shows...good luck xx

Juno231 · 25/08/2020 13:06

@Flowerkm ah I'm sorry that was a BFN. Fingers crossed AF shows her ugly head tomorrow in that case!

@MintGreenLife scan was all clear so at least that's one more thing ticked off the list!

Flowerkm · 25/08/2020 13:44

@MintGreenLife Good news about the little bit of EWCM, hopefully it stays for a bit longer. How are the OPKs??
True about the LP stage and technically only on CD27 so still got plenty of time for AF and still be in a good cycle. Just so weird how short it was last month, guess that's just a side effect of coming off the pill, odd cycles lol

@Pip1903 I seem to have sore boobs after ovulation up until AF, but that's just me and that's what I'm used to, it is a symptom of early pregnancy so that is a good sign especially if they tend to stop hurting. Fingers crossed!!
Aw thank you, i am 13DPO today so i think if i was I'd expect to see a tiny tiny hint of a line but you're very right :)

@Juno231 Glad the ultrasound went ok, that's really good to hear :) Hopefully that puts your mind at rest knowing it's all ok xx

MintGreenLife · 25/08/2020 13:52

@Juno231 yay that's great news about the scan! Onwards and upwards to getting your BFP ☺️

@Flowerkm my OPK's are still really faint. Haha oh god don't even get me going on odd cycles 🙈

To those of you that check your cervix...when you're getting EWCM do you also find it around your cervix? I've noticed this ever cycle since I started checking mine - that I only get EWCM when I wipe, but when I check my cervix I find creamy CM. just find it a bit confusing and not sureness if that's normal? Getting a teeny bit of EWCM when I wipe today, cervix is high but hard and have creamy CM when I check it 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
Juno231 · 25/08/2020 14:07

@MintGreenLife yes definitely around the cervix too. Hm, sounds odd to have one type come out and a different typ at the source... I'm sure it's just one of those unreliable things though that aren't meant to be analysed too deeply! At least there's been some EWCM and your cervix is in the right position - fingers crossed it turns soft in the next couple of days.

Actually I've had cycles before where I had EWCM that changed to watery or creamy CM the two days before OD, and I think one of the ladies in my other thread had the same.

Elsie2021 · 25/08/2020 14:46

@MintGreenLife very frustrating as this is my first month tracking and I just want to ovulate so that I know I am! My cycles just seem to be getting longer and longer too :(

@Juno231 good luck with with foof ultrasound! Hope everything is okay :) will you find out there and then?

@lawandgin do you temp? Then you can confirm if you have ovulated after a high OPK.

lawandgin · 25/08/2020 15:32

@Elsie2021 no, I dont. I can't be doing with it to be honest. You may not have seen earlier in the thread that we are going to need IVF for Male factor anyway, so I decided temping was a bit pointless. I'm just trying to get my cycles back to some kind of normality before I head off for the pre-IVF testing and I'm working on the assumption that I should be in full working order, but who knows!

@MintGreenLife funny you should say about two different types of CM. I had EWCM when I wiped - and quite a lot of it - but creamy CM when I actually checked!

MintGreenLife · 25/08/2020 16:59

@Juno231 I've actually never felt my cervix go soft either, I feel it go a little softer and harder sometimes, but never properly soft. I don't know why I'm fussing so much trying to work out what's going on really, as if we are DTD every other day anyway there's probably not a lot of point is there! I've not been great with OPKs this cycle and generally seem a bit distracted (probably because of all the house and wedding stuff going on)! Which is a bit frustrating as wanted to give this cycle our best shot, but then I guess as long as we DTD every other day anyway we're giving it out best shot in that regard. Next cycle I might just stick to DTD every other day and charting BBT and leave it as that, as I get frustrated when things aren't lining up or doing what I think they should be.

@lawandgin glad it's not just me! That happens to me pretty much every cycle.

@Elsie2021 ahh it sucks doesn't it. It's hard not to let it get you down sometimes. At least it's not just you and so then it seems to be a fairly normal situation post pill. I think if I'm still having really long cycles and ovulating super late when we get back from our honeymoon I might call the GP just to see what they say, as I will have been off the pill around 6-7 months by then. Feel like it's unlikely they would be interested though as I've been getting AF.

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 26/08/2020 12:40

Hey everyone! Hope you're all ok ☺️

So AF arrived on lunch after a Joe Wicks workout..guess it helped 😂 so 27 day cycle this month and Ill count today as CD1 if AF comes on properly.

@MintGreenLife I totally get the obsessing though and I find myself counting days and then I say to myself, if we're DTD every other day then surely it doesn't matter?? Its just nice to know where you are i think :) xx

Juno231 · 26/08/2020 13:21

@Flowerkm I'm sorry AF showed but also happy you seem to have had a really good cycle!

@MintGreenLife regular DTD is all that matters! The rest is just bells and whistles no one actually needs - only reason I do them is cause regular BD would kill my OH lol! I can tell my cervix is soft or hard (although sometimes struggle to determine wth medium is) but I've never identified it as open or closed! Would you consider trying out agnus castus or vitex for a few months if this doesn't get better this/next cycle?

Elsie2021 · 26/08/2020 13:52

@Flowerkm sorry about AF but sounds like you had a lovely cycle! Fingers crossed for next month :)

I’m new to doing OPKs, low readings yesterday and the day before. This lunchtime I got 37%, I know that’s still quite low but I’m pleased it’s something. How quickly do you normally see a rise? Would you now test twice a day or is it still too low?

Thank you for your advice! :D

Elsie2021 · 26/08/2020 13:53

Should have said I’m CD24

Flowerkm · 26/08/2020 14:38

Thanks everyone :) Nice to be in a good cycle so far since coming off the pill, so fingers crossed it stays like this.

Ah that's good news about the OPKs, it probably wouldn't hurt to test tonight just in case. When I see a rise, normally the next day would be high and then the following day I'd have my peak so testing twice a day would be good especially as it happened at lunch so you may even peak tomorrow lunchtime/evening. Keep us posted :D

Juno231 · 26/08/2020 14:42

@Elsie2021 this cycle I had 21% on one day and the very next day I had a blazing peak. Would be worth doing another one around 7pm maybe just to be on the safe side?

Elsie2021 · 26/08/2020 16:05

@Flowerkm @Juno231

Thanks for your advice! I’ll test again later. Crossing my fingers it keeps rising!

lalababy2 · 26/08/2020 16:14

Hi all!

Just thought I would jump on... I came off the mini pill in July, (I was terrible at remembering to take it anyway, so surprised I didn't fall pregnant beforehand!)
I had a withdrawal bleed, then I had my period early August, so in theory should be ovulating around now! Trying to be optimistic in our first cycle of TTC baby number 2 SmileSmile

Good luck to everyone else in your journey!! Xx Daffodil

Elsie2021 · 26/08/2020 20:50

I just did another OPK and it’s back down to 0 😭

Why would that happen?

MintGreenLife · 26/08/2020 22:28

@Flowerkm af arriving sounds positive as means you had a good length luteal phase! Bet you were pleased in a way ☺️ Haha love that the workout brought it on xx

@Juno231 I think with everything else we have going on right now I've kind of naturally defaulted to worrying less about TTC and just focusing on DTD every other day and charting BBT. I did have a fair bit of EWCM mixed with creamy (was more opaque than clear but stretching several inches) when I wiped today but also the same around my cervix, so taking that to be a positive! I've looked back at my last cycle and I put EWCM on my chart from CD23, but then I went on to have it on and off for around two weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ It's CD18 today so hoping as it's earlier that might be a positive and I'll ovulate in the next 5 days or so. Just praying it happens before we head off to my sister-in-laws next Wednesday ready for the wedding prep!

I'm not sure about Agnus Castus. I've looked into it and apparently it only helps if prolactin is high or dopamine is low. I'd be worried about doing something wrong and making things worse, but then from this group it seems the majority go back to cycling pretty regularly so am starting to feel like I'm a minority. It even says on the NHS website that your natural cycle should resume after 3 months, and I'm over 5 months off the pill now but have only had 3 cycles in that time. Think I'll leave it until 6 months and then maybe contact the GP x

@Elsie2021 I used OPKs for the first time during my second cycle off the pill and during that time I had three false peaks. My LH would go up to being super close to a positive and then would drop back down again the next day. That happened three times 🤦🏻‍♀️ It could be that your body is trying to ovulate and not quite managing, although as you say I think 37% is still pretty low, so maybe not a surge at all really x

Welcome @lalababy2 ☺️ Did you come off the pill to try for your first? Hopefully if you got back on track quickly then the same will happen this time round x

Elsie2021 · 27/08/2020 08:21

@MintGreenLife I feel exactly like you. This is my 6th month off the pill and I think I’ve had 4 cycles. First one came after 43 days, then 28 days (and I thought everything was great!) then 34 days, last one was 41 days and now on CD25 with no ovulation yet.

I have only just started charting so I dont even know if I have been ovulating which is what really worries me. At least you know you have so your body can. I have read through other older threads where people are the same as us but have had their BFP so I wouldn’t worry! But if it is causing you stress then maybe you should go to the doctor because stress won’t help either.

I didn’t plan on TTC just yet, I wanted to wait until the new year when we will also have a bigger house. But me and my partner have started talking about trying now just to know if we can, which I know is for the wrong reason!

Sending you love. We will get there!
