Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Ah I see. How are things going for your colleague now?

Good luck tomorrow! I spose you almost hope they do find something?

Juno231 · 20/08/2020 20:40

@Elsie2021 thanks! Although it's on Tuesday 😊. Tbh no I don't want them to find anything, whatever it would be would be a hassle! Colleague with a fibroid will need surgery to have it removed and I'd quite like to avoid going under the knife 😅

MintGreenLife · 20/08/2020 22:49

@Juno231 ahh that's super frustrating. Could you DTD before you go away? As you may ovulate the next day or so, so would still be in with a good chance! Or do you think you'll try to sneakily DTD while away? I haven't had any EWCM today, so guess I'm still a way off. Think if I ovulate before CD21 that would be a win for me. If it happens much later then we will be at my sister-in-laws getting ready for the wedding, so will be in the same situation as you! At what point did you start getting some tests done with the NHS out of interest? X

Morning ladies
Does anyone else get breast pain after ovulation? Had it during but after seems to be worse I'm only 3dpo( that's if I def did ovulate).
Looked bk on symptoms for last month when I thought I was ovulating and was the same.
Never had any breast pain on the pill.
Just wondering if any of you have had the same?
It's more of an ache and heavy feeling.
Hoping this may be more of a sign I am ovulating 😊

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 09:17

@Pip1903 Im with you with the breast pain, nothing when AF finishes and then about a day or so after my peak they are so sore and achy. My OH said they look different as they look swollen almost where they're sore? Also TMI maybe but my nipples are so pointy 🙈 Never on the pill did I get this but the wait between ovulation and AF they're very sore!

@Juno231 hope the scan goes ok for you and just do a sneaky BD while away or before you go if you can ☺️ xx

eternalflame2020 · 21/08/2020 09:20

@pip1903 the first cycle after the mini pill I had the most painful breast pain ever just after ovulation and it lasted about 4 days! This cycle I have not had any at all.

I got a faint positive on a frer yesterday at 10dpo but I'm being very cautious as I don't have any symptoms at all. No breast pain, no nausea. The only thing that links up is the my cervix has disappeared! It's so high I can't reach it which I've never had before. I'm just praying it sticks. Going to test again in a few days to see if the line has darkened.

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 09:38

@eternalflame2020 Aww thats amazing news ☺️ I have everything crossed for you this sticks.
Totally understand about being cautious but thats super exciting :) xx

Juno231 · 21/08/2020 10:23

@Pip1903 I think breast pain is meant to be one of the progesterone symptoms but I don't get much if any of it myself

@MintGreenLife yeah the plan is to BD at lunch today as that's our last shot. Sunday we go from our friend's house to OH's dad's house. They have seven bedrooms so there's def enough privacy for us to DTD! Question is if OH will be up for it as I imagine he'll be drinking and staying up late. As for tests, I contacted my GP in July about tests. I think the only reason I got approved for tests though was because of my family history of early menopause.

eternalflame2020 · 21/08/2020 10:36

@flowerkm thank you, that's really sweet. Trying to stay cautiously optimistic!

How's it going your side?

Pip1903 · 21/08/2020 10:51

@Flowerkm yes mine are the same 🙈🤣. Thanks hoping this is a good sign I've ovulated .x

Pip1903 · 21/08/2020 10:53

@eternalflame2020 wow sounds promising fingers crossed for you!.
I've read some ladies have little to no symptoms when they get their bfp so hopefully this is the case for you 😊 xx

Juno231 · 21/08/2020 10:58

@eternalflame2020 omg I missed the FRER bit! That is amazing news! And don't worry about symptoms, I think most ladies don't have any at 10DPO. Fingers crossed for a sticky bean for you!

@MintGreenLife TMI but I just went to the loo and had sooo much ewcm that I was struggling to wipe it all lol. Don't have a clue why it's been in overdrive this time around! My cervix is high and soft as well so I'm hoping I'll get that peak OPK this weekend in that case!

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 11:02

@eternalflame2020 Aw you're welcome :)

Im doing ok thanks, on CD23 today and 9DPO but I feel really crampy today and sort of expecting AF over the weekend. My app predicts Tuesday but i think it will be before. Hoping to at least wait until Sunday so Ill be over the 10days for the luteal phase. Last cycle i had an 11 day luteal phase so would be a bit upset if it was less this time as hoped to have a longer one but we shall see :) xx

Freckle1 · 21/08/2020 12:30

@Pip1903 @Flowerkm I get the breast pain too! I had it so bad for weeks it felt like before my first period off the pill, and now I’m on my first cycle and 3 or 4 DPO and they’re agony today! I read it’s due to the hormones after ovulation too...

Everyone talks about how bad the pill can be for side effects but so far I feel like I have more hormonal symptoms off it than what I ever had on it!

I felt sooo cranky the day after I think I ovulated this month too! And kind of during my peak too tbh

I have a stressful work meeting this afternoon that I’m trying not to get stressed about because I know stress can prevent implantation... I did a workout this morning and am trying so hard not to think about it too much. Do you guys try to keep your stress levels low while TTC?

Juno231 · 21/08/2020 13:18

@Freckle1 I try to but I am a naturally pretty anxious/stressed person. Work is stressing me out at the moment but I do try to be mindful, do some meditation apps or guided breathing via my fitbit if I get too worked up. Let's not forget stressed women have kids ALL the time. Every single career woman for goodness sake, or mums to multiple kids - not to mention women in war, experiencing trauma, being raped etc all seem to manage to get pregnant so I don't want to overthink it.

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 13:33

@Freckle1 I totally get your point with hormones off the pill. Especially the first cycle, I was a wreck but feeling better this month with emotions 🙈 i almost like feeling a bit emotional as its so normal and natural and its nice knowing Im not on controlled by hormones anymore. I really don't think Id go back on the pill.

Well done on the workout. When we properly start TTC ill try to not overthink as I'm also a natural worrier. Id be doing the food shop and my watch buzzes to tell me my stress levels are high (i mean give me a break garmin, Im in a facemask and trying to avoid people) but Ill really try and just let things happen and distract myself through the 2 weeks xx

Freckle1 · 21/08/2020 13:34

@Juno231 that’s a good way to look at it! Thanks! Oh I hadn’t even thought about the guided breathing on my Apple Watch, good tip. Smile

Freckle1 · 21/08/2020 13:39

@Flowerkm that’s great that you’re feeling a little more normal this month! I think I am better compared to the first month off but I really didn’t feel great this month around ovulation time, I thought we were supposed to feel on top of the world when we’re ovulating! Not me! That’s fair enough not wanting to go back on it. I was on the mini pill and fairly happy with that so I will probably go back on after the TTC and baby journey is complete.

That’s good that you’re going to try to let things go and distract yourself in the tww, every bit counts!

My sister was telling me yesterday that both of her babies were conceived when she was on holidays so I’m thinking I want to watch my stress and maybe get some extra sunshine to try to see if that helps me too. x

MintGreenLife · 21/08/2020 13:58

@Pip1903 I get sensitive nipples after ovulation :) in a way its kind of handy as helps you know it's happened, especially if not charting BBT!

@Juno231 ahh well fingers crossed today will be all you need to catch the egg anyway! Are you going to take OPKs away with you? Ahh fair enough, hope your ultrasound goes well! Yay for lots of EWCM, surely that's a good sign?! Not sure I trust my new thermometer, it's just the femtometer one, which was fine last time apart from it breaking! But at 4.30am (time I take it every day) I got a reading of 38.75!!! I knew it must be an error, but I did think 'oh god am I sick, without feeling at all sick?!' I took it again immediately after and it came back 36.18, which is normal for me, so recorded that...but still, bit strange.

@eternalflame2020 oh my gosh congrats!! Remind us how long you've been off the pill for? Keep us up to date with testing :) fingers and toes crossed for you x

I'm CD13 now and no EWCM or anything happening really. Think it was wishful thinking that I would ovulate in a timely manner urgh x

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 14:00

@Freckle1 Ah thats rubbish you didn't feel amazing over ovulation, thats the time your body is meant to make you feel great and want to Dtd. Hopefully better next cycle.

Ooh conceiving on holiday would be soo nice! Something about the sea breeze hehe. Deffo need some more sun though and a holiday 😩 xx

Pip1903 · 21/08/2020 17:12

@Freckle1 we about the same in cycle 😊.. yes I agree lots more symptoms since stopping pill.
I'm trying to keep calm 🤣 but I've had a stressful day at work too ...hope meeting went well xx

eternalflame2020 · 21/08/2020 19:44

@mintgreenlife I have the femometer thermometer too and I'm pretty sure it said that it will not give a true reading immediately after, you have to wait a set time (I think 5 minutes) with it turned off before taking a 2nd reading.

My temps are still above the cover but they haven't risen the last few nights, I think because I've been so hot I've had the fan directly on me with no covers!

I came off the mini pill at the end of May and this is my second cycle. This evening I'm feeling like AF is coming and keep expecting it to be there when I go to the toilet. I know that it can also be a symptom of pregnancy so I'm trying not to think about it too much! Easier said than done.

@flowerkm I hope that AF gives you a good luteal phase. Mine was 11 days last cycle and I had fingers crossed it would be at least that again this month xx

Flowerkm · 21/08/2020 19:57

@eternalflame2020 thank you! Nothing today so hoping i can get through tomorrow and start AF Sunday or even Monday :) xx

Elsie2021 · 22/08/2020 09:14

Congratulations @eternalflame2020. Good luck! Keep us up to date with testing.

CD20 today and no temperature rise. Have had watery CM for the past 4 days and some EWCM day before yesterday. Feeling fed up it’s going to be another long cycle. Just really hope I do ovulate :(

Juno231 · 22/08/2020 14:52

Had my super peak, dye stealing opk today! Shame we're staying with friends in a tiny house atm 😂. Managed to DTD yday and Wednesday and will try to do it tomorrow (which hopefully should be OD?) - that's not ideal but I should technically be covered right?
