Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Flowerkm I hope you're right! I did have some EWCM just for one day on my second cycle off the pill around CD12, but then didn't go on to ovulate until CD 30+ so not holding my breath, but going to treat this as my FW and will keep DTD every other day and hope I get a positive OPK soon! As I said I've also had OPKs that were similar throughout cycles without ovulating for ages, but as these are different ones it's hard to compare! Really hoping this pans out the way I want it to though :) xx

@Elsie2021 no ovulation pain for me :) I never had it as a teenager either, so I guess that's normal for me x

Ovulation pain yesterday evening. Did baby dancing last night and OPK today still shows strong lines. Do we DTD again tonight or go with every second day - so confused! Was back in the office yesterday and it wasn't as strange as I anticipated it to be ❤️

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 19:24

@Elsie2021 I had ovulation pain quite bad the first month off the pill, it felt like a stitch on my right side and was soo painful, i had to take painkillers for it. Luckily it was nowhere near as bad this time, deffo felt crampy and stitch like but really wasn't as bad which is good.

@MintGreenLife sounds like a good plan :) fingers crossed! Keep us posted on your OPKs.

@mrsmacmc they say every second day is fine so don't stress if you can't tonight but it won't hurt if you're both up for BD but Ive always said don't make it a chore so see how the mood feels :)
Ah Im glad the office felt ok, our work have said middle of Jan now at the earliest, although they are reviewing next week month so who knows? Strange times isn't it? Xx

mrsmacmc · 19/08/2020 19:33

@Flowerkm thank you we've been BD pretty much every 2nd day then sun / mon & tues - shall see how the mood takes us tonight! Hubby refers to it as keeping the tubes ripped up 🤣 TMI apologies!

I reckon we will move to the right again with back to office date which is currently 10th Sept (14th for me as we are on leave). Hubby has been told Jan 21 but even then it'll be a hybrid of remote and office work which I'm hoping to do as well. I find I'm more productive working at home and can do 95% of my job too along with the fact mentally I've been in a better place (think getting an extra 90min in bed and dinner done before 7 helps!) My counterpart is desperate to get back in 5 days a week.

@mrsmacmc haha! Thats a brilliant saying, love that 😂 Also thats pretty good going with the BD!

I think it will move too, yeah ours say Jan but it will be on a rota basis and WFH most of the week. I do miss the social side but also loving the saving on travel and the extra hour in bed!

Sorry that should be 'tubes topped up' bloody autocorrect 🤬

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 20:18

@mrsmacmc 😂😂 i mean tbh i thought you meant ripped as in 'muscle ripped' and keeping them in shape 🤣 but yes, keep them topped up is a good one too! Xx

mrsmacmc · 19/08/2020 23:23

Ladies I think our neighbour may be onto us 🤣 we have to lock the dog downstairs (he normally sleeps in our bed) while BD and he whines / cries and howls 🙈 neighbour messaged asking if Harry (the dog) was OK as she could hear him. Gave her the 'OH stupidly locked the baby gate' absolutely mortified!!!!

Elsie2021 · 20/08/2020 09:34

@mrsmacmc 🤣😂🤣😂

MintGreenLife · 20/08/2020 09:46

@mrsmacmc haha oh no! We have to do similar, although the dog doesn't sleep in with us, but she follows us round everywhere when we are in the house, so we have to shut her in downstairs for DTD. Hopefully your neighbour wouldn't have clocked why you shut the dog downstairs! TBH I'm fairly certain our neighbours would be able to tell we were DTD anyway, as our bed is squeaky and our house is Victorian - I can even here next door coughing and sneezing through the walls!

How's everyone getting on today? Going to do another OPK around lunch time and hoping it will be darker, although no more EWCM after the teeny bit I had yesterday. @Juno231 @Flowerkm do you think I should be doing OPKs twice a day now? xx

Flowerkm · 20/08/2020 10:12

@mrsmacmc 😂😂 thats brilliant!! Luckily our dog stays downstairs so no one would know 🙈

@MintGreenLife ahaa! The house we used to rent was like that and I just knew they knew lol
I would go for 2 a day, i usually do one around 10 and then 7 when they get darker but there normally isn't a massive difference and i peak in the mornings but I just like to have all basis covered 😂 xx

eternalflame2020 · 20/08/2020 10:13

Oh my gosh @mrsmacmc that's so funny! I live in a flat between two floors and my bed is the noisiest thing going...pretty difficult to look neighbours in the face most days 😂

eternalflame2020 · 20/08/2020 10:14

@flowerkm I totally misread your last post and thought you were still talking about dtd until you said they get darker 😂😂😂

Flowerkm · 20/08/2020 10:16

@eternalflame2020 😂😂 omg no! Can you imagine...😂😂 xx

Louisa199 · 20/08/2020 12:00

@MintGreenLife I don't get it, why it said high if it is only 23%. But it is a negative result. I think you should keep testing.

MintGreenLife · 20/08/2020 12:13

@Flowerkm OK awesome, going to do my first today in a min and then if it's still darkish I will do another later.

@Louisa199 oh I know it's not positive - the femtometer app has a categories for high and peak and I think anything above 20%-80% is considered high. I'm not used to the femtometer OPKs, but I think they are a lot less sensitive than the others so a faint line maybe would be darker on a more sensitive OPK? @flowerkm and @Juno231 have been helping me with them as they use the same ones :) I switched as with the more sensitive ones I endlessly had a mid-dark line and it was getting on my nerves!

CD18 and have had watery CM for a few days and definite EWCM today! Hopefully will ovulate soon and will see a rise in my temperature.

Probably still looking at a 33-35day cycle, but that’s down a week from last month!

Elsie2021 · 20/08/2020 12:55

I just put the EWCM into my Femometer app and it changed my ovulation day to today!

Now I’m going to be so disappointed if I don’t get a temperature rise tomorrow 😂

Juno231 · 20/08/2020 13:03

@Elsie2021 ha ignore that, femometer does it automatically as soon as you log ewcm. Per that app I ovulated for like 5 days straight last cycle 😅

MintGreenLife · 20/08/2020 13:29

@Flowerkm looks like I won't be testing twice a day just yet - OPK is back to being really faint and Femtometer is saying low now, wah xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 20/08/2020 13:36

@MintGreenLife ahh, keep testing though tomorrow, it could just be because you had drank too much and your wee was really diluted. Still could happen soon :)

@Elsie2021 ooh exciting. finger crossed your temp rises ☺️ xx

Juno231 · 20/08/2020 15:03

@MintGreenLife ah that's annoying! Mine are still blank so looks like I won't be ovulating tomorrow after all! Won't even get a positive OPK tomorrow either. Which means potential ovulation when I'm away...

I've got an ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday so would be interesting if they can see anything ovulation related then!

Elsie2021 · 20/08/2020 15:15

What is your ultrasound for @Juno231?

Juno231 · 20/08/2020 18:55

@Elsie2021 it's part of the NHS fertility assessment - I had day 3 and day 21 blood tests done (although 21 they messed up so I have to redo those) and they refer you for a transvaginal ultrasound to check if you have any cysts or fibroids etc that might be getting in the way of TTC. My colleague had one done last year and found out she has a big fibroid blocking her cervix so sperm couldn't get in!
