Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@MintGreenLife I bet! I had mine done the other day too, but I have such little hair, I'm all done in about an hour and a half - including colour...🤷‍♀️ I've always wished for long, thick, swishy hair!

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 21:56

@lawandgin sometimes it's a pain - if I were to try and air dry it I would need to do it first thing in the morning for it to be dry by early evening, or it takes a good 30 mins with a hair dryer! Plus ages to curl or whatever too, so there are downsides 😂

Pip1903 · 18/08/2020 22:11

@MintGreenLife beautiful hair 😍

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 22:14

@Pip1903 thank you 😘 You're all so sweet x

lawandgin · 18/08/2020 22:17

@MintGreenLife I suppose that shows the grass isn't always greener - mine is air dry in about 45 minutes and literally about 4 minutes with the hairdryer 😂 we always want what we don't have, right?!

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 22:20

@lawandgin haha oh totally - mine is naturally straight and I curl it, would kill for naturally wavy hair!

Juno231 · 18/08/2020 22:29

@MintGreenLife holy guacamole that is some gorgeous hair!! Mine could never look like that - it's dead straight and fine so at that length I could only look like morticia addams 😂. Wow!

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 22:37

@Juno231 😘 Well I'm not sure if Morticia Addams is any worse than my before Hagrid look 😂 Thanks though, am pleased with how it came out. Must focus more on TTC stuff tomorrow instead of hair 😂 I've been very distracted this week as we've had several hours of viewings of our house both tonight and last night, and then obviously was in the hairdressers all day today too! X

Morning ladies! Wow - your hair is beautiful @mintgreenlife I used to have long hair like yours and mine is also very thick so had the chop just so I could dry it quicker 😂 when I see how lovely yours looks I wish I'd kept it!

I'm 9dpo today and poas because I have issues and unsurprisingly it was a bfn. I don't really have too many symptoms other than my cervix has been getting higher over the last few days and my temps have been rising on the chart. It'll probably all drop just in time for the weekend and af will attack!

How's everyone else doing this morning? X

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 08:02

@eternalflame2020 morning ☺️
Sorry about your BFN but as they say you're not out until AF arrives, fingers crossed still!

Im ok thank you, 7DPO today but we still aren't properly trying so just waiting for AF which is due next Tuesday, have a feeling it will be more this weekend though.

Also Im having some date dilemmas...so as you know my sisters wedding is towards the end of April next year and if i fall next month Ill be 4 weeks away from my due date at her wedding but if i fall the next cycle Ill be around 8 weeks away.
Its silly because this is going along the lines it happens quickly but in reality i know it most likely won't but i just feel Id be happier waiting another cycle. Im a big part of her day and i want to be able to run around for her and help her. Am i being silly? Xx

Juno231 · 19/08/2020 09:38

@eternalflame2020 early days still, that BFN means nothing!
@Flowerkm of course you're not being silly! do what feels best for you - I'm just not as good a person and also always wildly overestimate my abilities so would gamble that I'd be fine at 36 weeks to help lol.

CD10 today and on day 4 of EWCM! Will jump OH today as part of my every 2-3 day schedule but am expecting OPKs to still be blank.

Louisa199 · 19/08/2020 09:44

@Pip1903 Have you ever got a higher peak, like higher than 0.8? I know premon will still mark 0.5 as a peak if you did not get a higher ratio in the previous cycle. It is better to keep testing, in case that is not your true peak. The app will correct the prediction when it identifies the highest ratio in the cycle.
If you never got a positive result in the test, I think you would like to try the quantitative ovulation test, it gives you a number of your LH level.

MintGreenLife · 19/08/2020 10:20

@eternalflame2020 you never know :) you're still in this cycle as far as I'm concerned! Haha very sensible re the hair! I went shorter once as a teen and vowed to never do it again, so I guess I'm stuck with several hours drying time ha.

@Flowerkm I agree with Juno, do whatever feels right for you :) at least you have some time until your next ovulation day to decide, are you leaning towards holding off?

@Juno231 I think 4/5 days of EWCM is normal and actually maybe optimal? I'm CD11 now and no EWCM yet, was hoping it might have started by now if I were on track for a normal ovulation. My temp was low again today! Was 35.97 I believe. The only thing I've done differently recently is as I've been feeling hot when going to bed I've been sleeping on top of the duvet and under a blanket instead of under the duvet, surely that can't have that big an impact? x

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 10:40

@MintGreenLife @Juno231 Thank you for your lovely replies, that makes me feel better. I think I also underestimated it and i was like 'Oh I'll be fine' but actually that's pretty pregnant and I'll probably be all swollen and just wanting to sit down.
I am leaning more towards waiting another cycle..I've been calculating future due dates (please tell me others do this) and earliest I'll be due is towards end of June so i think that's plenty, plus could take sometime anyway to become pregnant.

Got everything crossed for you two that ovulation is near :) xx

Juno231 · 19/08/2020 10:56

@Flowerkm ha I calculate due dates every month! FF does it for me even.

@MintGreenLife yeah I'm mostly weirded out by how early it started! Normally I only noticed 2-3 days before OD.

MintGreenLife · 19/08/2020 11:08

@Flowerkm oh yeah I totally do, but that's mostly because I'm trying to work out how far along I would be each month for our 'postponed' wedding. Here's me thinking we will just power through and I'll just deal with it when it happens for my own wedding, and you being super careful for someone else's wedding ha. I know we should probably stop if it hasn't happened by October, but then how long do you stop for?! I feel like I'm not going to want a new born and to feel terrible on the day if I'm only a few months past giving birth, but then also I wouldn't want to be more than 5-6 months pregnant, so that's basically a whole 5-6 months of stopping! Which I really really don't want to do :/

@Juno231 well I would take it as a good sign and more opportunity to catch this cycle :) wishing my EWCM would start tbh ha x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 12:28

@MintGreenLife aw, no i totally get that. I think if it was my own wedding Id feel different as its my wedding and you make it work, and you can't keep putting it off as like you say, 5/6 months is quite a while.
Its weird how i think sometimes 😂 I want to be able to run around for her, when its your wedding thats what your bridal party is for so I wouldn't worry and i certainly wouldn't be as worried if it was my own. Id say go for it if you're happy to work around what could be :)

Also so glad you also predict dates! X

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 12:30

@MintGreenLife also being pregnant on your wedding day or having a little one will make it so special as well xx

MintGreenLife · 19/08/2020 12:44

@Flowerkm well that's true ☺️ I was thinking you were being much more sensible than me, but those are all valid points 😀

@Juno231 @flowerkm - sorry to be posting individual OPKs 😂 As you two use these just wanted to see what you think. Femometer is saying today's OPK is 'high' whereas when I in put it into my premom app it's giving a reading of 0.29 (classed as low), which is generally what I would start getting around mid way through my cycle for like two weeks last time, until I finally peaked. However I think the Premom OPKs are a lot more sensitive aren't they? So perhaps this is a high reading then 🤷🏻‍♀️

@MintGreenLife ahh thats a good looking OPK! Mine would look like that on CD12 then CD13 a lot darker then peak on CD14! Thats exciting, hopefully that gets darker tonight/tomorrow morning and you get a peak.

Keep sending them! I have no updates my end so its fine to see other people's updates ☺️ xx

Pip1903 · 19/08/2020 13:44

@Louisa199
Hiya no last cycle I didnt test till cd 40 as was trying to work out what was happening.it was my first cycle off the pill. CD 40 ending up being my highest test of 0.53 after that they went low again so either missed peak as not testing before that day or my level doesn't go high enough.
However after that af finally arrived on cd53.
I haven't heard of those tests will look into them thanks x

Juno231 · 19/08/2020 13:48

@MintGreenLife I agree with flowerkm - as soon as mine show that amount I know I'm in FW. Usually it means I peak maybe two days later but last month I had those starting on CD8 and didn't ovulate until CD17. That's my only exception though!

Also this is just me but I'd hate to be pregnant on my wedding day purely cause I wouldn't be able to drink!! Grin

MintGreenLife · 19/08/2020 14:04

@Flowerkm haha awh thanks ☺️ Without getting too ahead of myself, I had the teeniest bit of EWCM when I went for a pee earlier, so hopefully this is me in my FW now!

@Juno231 awesome thanks ☺️ As I just said to @flowerkm I had a teeny little bit of EWCM so fingers crossed ovulation will happen in the next few days! Haha oh I'm totally with you on that. I think because we are officially getting married this year and I'll be able to drink then (as only 2 weeks away now) maybe it won't be so painful to not be able to drink next year xx

Flowerkm · 19/08/2020 14:27

@MintGreenLife YAY! this is looking so promising for you :) i won't jinx it but what a difference in cycles xx

Elsie2021 · 19/08/2020 15:20

@Juno231 fingers crossed it looks like your cycle is going to be a lot more normal for you!

I’m a bit happier today. I’m now CD17 but I think my CM is more watery so hopefully that’s a good sign.

Who gets ovulation pain? And what does it feel like/how long does it last?

I’ve never paid so much attention to myself and I have noticed some slight twinges today.
