Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Hm @Pip1903 it's hard to say for sure but I reckon CD13 was the tail end of it and you may have peaked in the evening of CD12 actually! That's fairly early on compared to your previous cycle though so I wouldn't be surprised if this was an attempt but that you might not have ovulated yet - even if it was a peak.

Freckle1 · 18/08/2020 11:11

Sorry for the typo, I meant through temping or a scan in my previous message, not sure how a scam would let you know if you ovulated Grin

Flowerkm · 18/08/2020 11:13

@Freckle1Hey. That's really good to get a peak so soon coming off the pill, funnily enough, my first month off the pill I also got a static on CB on CD13. That's not silly about the exercise but i'm going along the lines of keep going what I'm doing as my body is used to it but i'm certainly not pushing myself for fastest 5ks or anything like that :)

@Juno231 I really like that idea of treating yourself monthly, i mean why not? :D Fingers crossed it is your month though or super soon xx

@Pip1903 It does look as if you were sooo close to ovulating or you did and missed it. My brand is also different but they are pretty strong lines. My peaks happen quick and I was so close to missing them both cycles, i just tested 2 or 3 times a day to catch up and then after a peak by the evening my lines are quite a bit fainter, they don't stick around so I'm guessing it happens quick for me.

Kay00 · 18/08/2020 11:25

Hi @Pip1903 it looks promising, even if none of your OPK's are positive, you have lots of other signs (boobs + EWCM). I would assume you have ovulated and next month temp to be sure Smile

Pip1903 · 18/08/2020 11:49

@Freckle1 @Juno231 @Flowerkm @Kay00
Thanks ladies for your reply.
I'm really hoping this is a more normal cycle after stopping the pill, first cycle was 53days and didnt ovulate until day 40 although think body did try before that.

I have read the peak can be fairly quick and easy to miss so fingers crossed. As by evening my test became negative again.

Although if not hoping it's a sign my body is becoming more regular or at least trying. X

Pip1903 · 18/08/2020 12:27

@Juno231 I'm really hoping you could be right and i maybe missed my peak in the evening as only tested twice daily and then it came bk down on cd13 🤞...thanks for that as I'd not considered that so was really helpful.
I've been on pill for 10years now so really hoping I'm going bk to previous cycles of 28days. Although I know can take a while once stopping.
Wish there was simple test to say yes bk to normal 🤣.
I'm unsure now wether to keep testing with opks throughout the rest of my cycle? As this could of been an attempt again.
Do u ladies continue to test after signs of ovulation? Xx

Freckle1 · 18/08/2020 13:03

@Pip1903 if it was me I’d wait until next cycle to test because cd 12 -15 is right around when the majority of people are said to ovulate... but I have seen some people on here keep testing and find multiple lh surges.

The way my clear blue connected app is it tells me when to test, after the peak days it doesn’t tell me to test again until cd 7 so I just follow that. That’s the way I do it but you could keep testing if you wanted, it’s totally up to you!

I think you might find the clear blue ones that identify 4+ days helpful if you seem to ovulate quickly because they identify your Estrogen rise as well so you know when your lh surge peak days are coming. Once your Estrogen rises it’s good to start testing twice per day so that you don’t miss the peak. But then CB is less flexible with continuing to test after peak etc. Also some people don’t like the days of flashing smileys for the Estrogen rise.

@Flowerkm that’s good to know about your approach to exercise then! Haha we are CD 13 buddies! Maybe I should just do the class then

Freckle1 · 18/08/2020 13:06

@Pip1903 just reading your post again about how you ovulated on day 40, that makes sense then that you’d want to keep testing I can see why you would! But if it seems to be happening mid cycle now that’s much more typical so fingers crossed it’s going to be more typical cycles for you from now on x

eternalflame2020 · 18/08/2020 13:28

Thanks @freckle1 I think I had one back in my teenage years, otherwise this is the first in adulthood! It's for pretty bad today so the doctor has given me antibiotics and assured me they're ok to take whilst ttc. Completely lost my appetite and can only tolerate water, so hopefully it'll clear quick.

It does seem that things return to normal a bit quicker after the mini pill. I think that's because the mini pill doesn't necessarily stop ovulation, it just creates a plug to stop sperm entering and makes the environment a little less hospitable!

Pip1903 · 18/08/2020 13:35

@Freckle1 thank you.. yes I think your right I'll wait to see if af arrives on predicted day 1st Sept. Fingers crossed 🤞as that would mean a more regular cycle.
If it doesn't I could start the opks again incase I ovulate later again.
I think I will invest in the clear blue next month as they seem alot easier to read compared to the cheaper ones ...thanks again 😊x

lawandgin · 18/08/2020 15:48

@Pip1903 we seem to be a very similar situation. Had a 'peak' on CD 12 and levels slowly dropping since. OPK control line was still darker than test line though, with a reading of 0.51. Either I missed a higher reading between the afternoon of CD 11 and 12, or 0.51 was as good as it got... I am now CD 18 and have carried on testing and will through to AF, just in case this was a failed attempt at ovulation. Hopefully by cycle 3 I will have a better understanding!

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 15:56

@Flowerkm @eternalflame2020 been here 5 hours now and getting a bit bored 😴 Hopefully will be out by 6 latest to go for a dog walk!

@Elsie2021 sorry to hear you're feeling glum, CD16 isn't too late, but I totally get that at this point you've waited over two weeks for ovulation and it's frustrating it hasn't happened yet. I'm CD10 I believe and I know I'll be getting grumpy by around CD16. A 'normal' ovulation can happen up to CD21, so fingers crossed you won't have to wait any longer than that. I'm not getting any EWCM or anything yet, so suspect I'll be waiting a while longer x

@Juno231 I think you may be right there - I felt a little bunged up last night and did notice as I was drifting off I was dribbling a little (urgh) as must have been breathing through my mouth, so perhaps I carried on through the night! Do you think I should mark it as abnormal? Hopefully you'll get your positive OPK soon, are you carrying on DTD anyway? Ahh I totally get why that would make you feel blue. Can you book yourself a little pick me up again soon? And maybe do something nice at home in the mean time, like a facemask and hairmask or something. And when I say facemask, I don't mean the fabric kind! Xx

I totally can't keep up with you guys today 😂 I'm also going to miss doing my OPK today, or maybe I'll just do it this evening just to be sure xx

Juno231 · 18/08/2020 16:02

@MintGreenLife I'd leave it in for now but leave a note so you remember what it was. If down the line it looks like it's affecting the graph (which I doubt as it's pretty early on) you can mark it abnormal then?

Luckily my next AF is due pretty much around the time we're due to go to Sicily (if that still happens lol) so I'll be doing another waxing/nails session then anyway :)

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 20:05

@Juno231 awesome thanks ☺️

Ah lovely, well fingers crossed AF won't show up, but at least you have lots of things to look forward to if she does.

Was in the hairdressers for 7 hours today 😅 At least my hair is wedding ready now! X

Pip1903 · 18/08/2020 20:40

@lawandgin yes we do seem to be in same situation heres to hoping we just missed our peak and did ovulate 🤞...my opks and since stayed low now.
I've checked bk on previous cycle and I started testing randomly on day 40 as was unsure what was happening in cycle and that test came bk at 0.53 that was the highest reading I got although I only tested once daily then as was new to opks.
However af did show two weeks later so maybe I peak through the evening ( that's what I'm hoping 😊).
Good luck with your ttc journey x

lawandgin · 18/08/2020 21:37

Thanks @Pip1903 it won't be a straightforward one for various reasons, but hopefully with a happy outcome 😊

@MintGreenLife major hair envy, wow!! X

MintGreenLife · 18/08/2020 21:42

@lawandgin haha thanks, feel like a new woman 😂 Forgot how nice it is to get your hair done after such a long time of not being able to go to the hairdressers!
