Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@MintGreenLife a lot of people say the month they stopped trying is the month they fell pregnant!

I think sometimes it’s worth having a month where you don’t track or temp and just have sex as often as possible. But easier said than done because it becomes a bit addictive!

Flowerkm · 15/08/2020 13:15

Hey ☺️ @Elsie2021 @MintGreenLife I hope ovulation happens soon for you both and you’re not waiting to long.
How nice was it to sleep in the cool? I slept sooo well! Lovely weekend just pottering and hopefully will manage to get in the garden to plant our sleeper beds!
CD17 for me, so just a waiting game now until next cycle. Ive noticed symptoms have stopped since last month so no where near as sore boobs or cramps which is good, slightly sore after ovulation but no where near the pain like last month xx

Juno231 · 15/08/2020 14:52

@Flowerkm this temp is so much more bearable! Wish it was still sunny though, I'm not ready for autumn to start.

@Elsie2021 got nothing planned this weekend and OH is gone all day playing golf so I'm happy to have some alone time! Currently on a walk and I think I'll have a bath when I get home :)

@MintGreenLife CD6 here, was thinking I'd start OPKs on CD9 and DTD every other day from then as well. Just in case I ovulate on CD12 again.

mrsmacmc · 15/08/2020 15:22

Had a bit of a bad night last night. Discovered I had burst a claw and lost a stone from my engagement ring - bawled like a baby as I felt I had lost my 'always' it's a 4 stone ring (yesterday, today, forever and always). Talking absolute gibberish to hubby and he stopped me dead by saying 'I'm here and I'm your always'. Fast forward to this afternoon and our very skilful jeweller in town has managed to repair and replace the stone. Much cooler today which is a bonus as can't stand being overheated. CD14 here so fingers crossed ❤️. Sending baby dust to all xx

Elsie2021 · 15/08/2020 17:28

@mrsmacmc I’m so sorry you lost your stone! I understand that must be heartbreaking, but I think we punish ourselves by looking into these things too much. Sounds like you have a lovely husband!

Glad it is all fixed now. And fingers crossed for ovulation!

mrsmacmc · 15/08/2020 17:57

@Elsie2021 thank you, yes it was heartbreaking and I was more embarrassed than anything else as I'm so careful with my rings, engagement ring hasn't been on my finger much since March as been working from home she is safely tucked up in her box. We've been extra careful as been looking after gramps and mum both been shielding along with hubby in the vulnerable group due to his asthma. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed 🤣 ❤️

eternalflame2020 · 15/08/2020 20:16

@flowerkm I'm exactly the same this month, CD22 and have nowhere near as many symptoms. I could barely put a bra on last month because of the pain and this month nothing. Had a sharp twinge for a few minutes earlier and I feel a little irritable but otherwise much better!

Now the dreaded wait! I had an 11 day luteal phase last month, so be interesting to see what happens this month.

Here's hoping for us all that this will be the month!

Flowerkm · 15/08/2020 20:27

@mrsmacmc Sorry to hear about your engagement ring ☹️ it does sound like your husband is really understanding and thats such a lovely thing to say, i hope it made you feel better.
@eternalflame2020 ah Im glad Im not the only one! Yep, same here and showering was painful for me, it was awful and yeah, this month nothing...weird?? When is your AF due?
My LP was 11 days last cycle I think but my app has said Im due on the 25th August which makes it a 26day cycle so we shall see :) xx

eternalflame2020 · 15/08/2020 20:35

@mrsmacmc amazing that they could repair your ring, what a relief that must have been!

@flowerkm Yeh, I was a bit worried that perhaps I wasn't producing as much hormone this month post ovulation, but I am definitely a little hormonal in my mood so I'm hoping all is ok. AF due 21st if it follows the same 28 day cycle as last month as I ovulated on CD17 according to bbt chart. We're pretty close in dates, nice to have someone going through it at the same time.

mrsmacmc · 15/08/2020 20:49

Thank you @eternalflame2020 & @Flowerkm he did make me feel much better and I was very grateful our talented local jeweller was able to fix it without too much drama or £! Think it's with everything going on I wobbled more than I usually would. Chilled Saturday night on the cards here ❤️

Flowerkm · 15/08/2020 21:03

@eternalflame2020 Im sure everything is fine, I think we just overthink it all and expect too much sometimes. Some months will vary from time to time :)
Ah, we are, thats really nice to be in sync and someone in the same sort of week as me ☺️
@mrsmacmc aw, enjoy your chilled evening xx

Juno231 · 16/08/2020 08:28

@mrsmacmc oof in sorry to hear about the lost stone! Hope it was insured? This happened to my friend with her main stone - and because it was a de beers ring the jeweller was trying to say my friend must've done something to it (perhaps implying insurance fraud) as de beers is too good quality for anything like this to happen 😅.

@MintGreenLife my body is still messing with me btw - guess who had EWCM today on CD7?? Def starting the OPKs today just in case...

eternalflame2020 · 16/08/2020 08:36

Morning! @flowerkm yeh, you're right it's only the second cycle, so no idea what is actually normal, especially as hormones are probably still settling after the pill.

So today I've had a big dip in temp to just below cover line. It's 6 DPO so no idea what's going on.

@juno231 have you enjoyed your chilled weekend whilst OH is away? It's been a bit of a wash out here, getting stir crazy!

AnonymousXXIX · 16/08/2020 09:01

Currently CD21 and possibly 2-3 DPO (but would normally be 7DPO now!) and the past 2 days my nipples have been incredibly painful. I usually get that after ovulation (and then it stops a day before af) so I think I will follow the timeline of ovulating late this cycle. Does anyone know anything about nipple pain; what hormone is that associated with?! First time ovulation is this late since coming off the pill though! I wonder if it was caused by the crazy amount of exercise I did last weekend (went hiking; intensively).

Going to take b6 again now and just aim for a long cycle. If my issue has been thin uterine lining, then a long cycle may mean it has some more time to build up, and the little egg will stick around???

Juno231 · 16/08/2020 09:16

@AnonymousXXIX I thought it was progesterone for nipples! If you have thin lining then drinking pomegranate juice is supposed to help - that's what ladies doing ivf get told. I drink it during the LP but you can drink it throughout the cycle.

@eternalflame2020 that big dip is normal btw, it's due to a secondary oestrogen surge. It's what lots of women think is an implantation dip but really it's just this.

MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 10:15

@Elsie2021 you're right about it becoming addictive 😂

@Flowerkm how long are your cycles usually? Not sure why but i keep waking up feeling so hot in the night! Which isn't great for BBT

@Juno231 wow EWCM on CD7! That's good going. Think earliest I've had it was CD12 which was my second cycle off the pill, and turned out to be nothing. I'm going to start using OPKs today also ☺️ In other news my thermometer is broken! I used it last night after a 5/6 day break and it's working but there's no sound, so I'm not sure when it's finished as not getting them 10 beeps. Think I'll just have to order another one as is going to be inaccurate if I take it out too early 🙄

@mrsmacmc this happened to me (engagement ring claw) about three months ago!! We are having a small ceramony so that we can officially get married in less than 3 weeks, and it's still not back from being repaired. I was very lucky though as I just have one oval shaped diamond and it fell out while I was in the bathroom and I heard it hit the floor. I had to scramble round in a panic but I found it eventually. So sorry that's happened, that's really upsetting xx

MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 13:52

@Juno231 @Flowerkm just did my first Femometer OPK - do you girls generally have a complete blank result until your LH surge? Or a very faint line? I have the faintest line on CD8 so was just wondering what your experience is? Also sorry if TMI but I seem to have loads of creamy CM today! Since coming off the pill I've had to go looking for it (checking my cervix) but am getting it in my underwear today and can just feel the difference if that makes sense. Hoping that's a good sign for a more regular cycle ☺️ Xx

Juno231 · 16/08/2020 13:59

@MintGreenLife can't believe the thermometer broke already! Luckily it's not an expensive one 😅. That's a stronger line than I would have on a random day - I did one today for instance and a vvfl on mine. Once I get to your stage though it can still take quite a few days to ramp up to peak but I reckon this is a good sign! Same about my CM btw, it was in my knickers this morning and when I checked there was a lot of it, which I don't normally have this early on. Hoping to get to CD12 at least before I ovulate, so as to give that egg some time to mature.

@eternalflame2020 having the day without OH yday was bliss lol. I like being on my own every now and then and that's quite difficult to arrange when we're both wfh!

lawandgin · 16/08/2020 14:06

@MintGreenLife that looks very similar to my femometer OPKs throughout my cycle. Yet to have anything like a dark line on one! I have switched to Easy@home as they seem a bit more sensitive. Still waiting to see whether the high reading I got the other day was actually my peak, so getting a bit frustrated with having to keep testing! I guess I'll know by when AF shows up (apps currently predicting between 26th and 29th - 26th would be a 26 day cycle which seems a bit short - I'm sure my cycles used to be more like 30 days, but it's so long ago, I can't be sure!)

MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 14:06

@Juno231 hmm well I hope the faint line is a good thing rather than a bad thing! As I've had trouble with OPKs and last cycle I had a mid-dark line for several weeks I've been worried it could be PCOS related, but then I guess coupled with the creamy CM could be a good sign and may mean I ovulate at a normal time this cycle 🤞🏼 Will have to see how the next few days go. Great about your CM! Wouldn't it be funny if we ovulate at the same time. I've honestly not had any CM in my underwear since I was a teenager, given that the pill dries it up, and thus far I haven't had any since coming off, apart from if I check my cervix and when I have EWCM, but I only find that when I wipe. Creamy CM in my underwear feels like a victory for today 😂

Oh gosh I'm with you about enjoying OH being away and having the house to myself! Since lockdown I honestly think I've had the house to myself for a couple of afternoons/evenings and that's been it, and I've looked forward to it so much 😂 I'm someone that needs at least an afternoon or an evening to myself once a week or so, so that's been a little tricky xx

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 14:39

@lawandgin I've done the opposite to you - I've switched from Easy@Home to Femometer as I was getting annoyed at how sensitive the easy@home ones were 😂 I endlessly had a mid-dark line and it was getting on my nerves so I thought I would switch. I have absolutely no clue what my cycle was like before, I'm sure it was pretty regular, but honestly I feel like I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't as never paid that much attention to it 😕 Xx

Hi everyone, I’ve been off the mini-pill for all of a week so interested to read this thread! I know that’s barely any time at all but already feeling slightly on edge as I didn’t realise how little I actually knew about my own cycles. I’ve been on the pill since I was 15 so no periods for nearly 15 years...time flies but now I’m thinking why didn’t I come off sooner to prepare?!
Three of my friends have recently conceived in their first month of trying which is also making me feel a bit worried as although I’m pleased for them I feel like it won’t possibly happen for me.
I had some slight cramping yesterday which has now disappeared. No idea when period/withdrawal bleed will come and no idea what to expect as like I said it’s been soooo long. Not sure if coming off the mini pill is different to coming off the normal pill, again I know embarrassingly little about all this 🤦🏻‍♀️

mrsmacmc · 16/08/2020 15:30

@MintGreenLife fingers crossed that you are reunited with your ring quickly and you were lucky to find the stone ❤️ I crawled about everywhere I had been and even picked every bit of fluff out my pockets in case I had caught it there. Checked the home insurance and they would've covered it but cheaper to get it replaced / repaired without going through them.

@CharityRoyall welcome! I don't know about the mini pill as it was the combined one I had been on, mine seems to follow the same timings when I had my withdrawal bleed as I tracked cycle when on the pill too in case we got a surprise!

So much for a quiet Sunday as been tackling some tasks off the DIY to do list and I've clocked up my 3 things

  1. Engagement ring
  2. Broken bracket
  3. Burst drill bit

Think I'll Velcro myself to the couch for the rest of today and back at work tomorrow. Feeling a bit anxious about it as we are having a meet in the office on Tuesday (been work from home since week prior to lockdown so it'll be a bit strange!)

Love to all ❤️

eternalflame2020 · 16/08/2020 15:44

Hi @charityroyall I came off the mini pill at the end of May and didn't have a withdrawal bleed at all. It took just over 4 weeks for my first period to come and then I had a 28 day cycle but ovulated CD17. In second cycle now and again ovulated around CD17 and yet to see how long the cycle will be. Not as many people seem to have mini pill experience so it'll be interesting to follow how you get on too!

CharityRoyall · 16/08/2020 15:52

Hi @mrsmacmc! Hi @eternalflame2020 good to speak to another mini-piller! I’ve not found loads of info about it as the combined pill experience seems to be more common so will follow your comments with interest Smile
I downloaded the Natural Cycles app and have been using the thermometer that came with it. Getting a bit confused by all the mentions of OPKs and stuff like that - how much of that sort of thing is recommended? Or am I ok for now with my app and thermometer haha? Xx
