Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@mrsmacmc so rubbish and upsetting 😢 sorry to hear you've had a bit of a rubbish day! Curl up on the sofa and be kind to yourself the rest of the day I say 💕 Esecpually with a big week coming up having to go back into the office! X

@CharityRoyall I don't know a lot about the mini pill I'm afraid. I've found charting BBT really good though, as even though we haven't caught yet at least I know I'm ovulating, despite my haywire cycles! X

eternalflame2020 · 16/08/2020 16:33

@charityroyall I am temping with the femometer app. I used an opk the first cycle but won't use it again as I find the temping quite easy to follow and have had ovulation pain the last 2 month's so have a good idea it's happening. Perhaps do a cycle with temping and see how you feel.

Flowerkm · 16/08/2020 16:50

@MintGreenLife Hey, My cycle last month was 25 days and as I ovulted on CD14 this cycle, Im hoping for a little longer, more around the 27 day but we shall see.
Ooh that does look darker than mine would on a usual day as well tbh, mine would be either blank or such a small line but it didn’t look like that. Fingers crossed! Keep testing and you'll get a better picture as the days go on. That would be good if its happening soon.
Talking about CM, i noticed some today when I went to the toilet, wasn’t stretchy so wasn’t EWCM so thats a good sign but so weird to see it.

@eternalflame2020 My OH fishes some weekends and he done a quick 12 hours on Friday night and i loved it 😂 xx

eternalflame2020 · 16/08/2020 16:57

@flowerkm my OH fishes too and goes once every few weeks on an overnighter on a Friday. I do my nails, have a bath, watch trashy tv and generally love life 🤣 it's so important for both us and them to have some space!

MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 17:03

@Flowerkm I would kill for cyckes that length 😂 Felt a little cheated last cycle thinking by the time AF came around I should have had two shots at TTC instead of one 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks for letting me know about your OPKs. Maybe I'll be on track for an earlier ovulation then, here's hoping! I'm still on the fence about the CB OPKs, just wonder if it's even worth the expense if we are going to be DTD every other day anyway, and I'm using other OPKs and temping, and obviously tracking CM and ovulation position...thinking I probably don't need to use them 😂 Think only benefit might be a warning to DTD a few days in a row, but that's if I can even convince OH to do that, and I can always try to up DTD when I start getting EWCM anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️

Remind me how many DPO you are? Think CM after ovulation can be because of a secondary estrogen surge usually around 5DPO x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 16/08/2020 17:50

@eternalflame2020 ahh thats exactly what I do!! Bath, nails, Netflix..love it. Very important i think as well :)

@MintGreenLife - haha! Aww, yours will settle and also with the CB OPKs if you’re going to do it every other day I think you’ll be fine and don’t need to see it, especially with the OPKs and temping i think you’ll be fine and have all bases covered :)
Im 4DPO today..what does that mean? Is that normal 🙈 Xx

MintGreenLife · 16/08/2020 18:07

@Flowerkm I feel like if we are strict about DTD every other day and then going for it every day when I have EWCM using the CB digitals is probably not necessary and then will be a waste of money. Going to kick myself if we mess up though and miss an opportunity 😕 Hmm it's most likely from your secondary estrogen surge. Don't think it means anything tbh, I might be wrong but I think it's something to do with the corpus lutuem taking over progesterone production. Maybe google secondary estrogen surge? Xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 16/08/2020 19:35

@MintGreenLife I agree, if you're going to be DTD that often, you'll be fine :)
Aw, no, don't beat yourself up over it, you can only do what you can and you don't want DTD to become a chore.
Ah yep, just had a google, all good 😂 I guess it just confirms I ovulated as Im now producing that...i feel like Im still learning so much! Xx

Juno231 · 16/08/2020 20:22

@CharityRoyall if you DTD every other day there's no need for OPKs. If not then if strongly recommend them - as bbt will let you know ovulation happened but OPKs will give you a heads up so actually gives you time to DTD for it too!

CharityRoyall · 17/08/2020 07:20

Thanks @Juno231 will give that a go for a couple of months and see if anything happens. If not then back to the drawing board!
Hope everyone has a good Monday :)

MintGreenLife · 17/08/2020 09:15

Morning everyone :) cycle day 9 for me so not a lot going on, although if I do ovulate in a timely fashion this cycle it almost feels like it'll come round too soon and that I'm not ready ha! We started DTD every other day since CD5 though, so should have everything covered. My temp was randomly really low this morn at 36.01, whereas the previous few nights it's been around 36.3ish, don't think I've had a temp that low before, but I don't trust my thermometer as the sound on it has stopped working, thankfully I have a replacement arriving today!

How is everyone? x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 17/08/2020 09:41

@MintGreenLife ha I thought of you this morning and counted the seconds to see how long it took for mine to beep! 1 min :) CD8 here so kinda in the same boring boat as you. DTD CD5 and CD7 so guess we're following your footsteps lol! Told OH he could have a break until Wednesday now though unless OPKs start getting darker.

It's funny about your temps - I've been thinking mine have been a lot higher this cycle than the previous one. Been mostly getting 36.3 when I'm using to more like 36.1 I feel.

Btw we're at a friend's house in Norfolk this weekend so kinda hoping I ovulate on CD12 (Friday) again this cycle just so we don't have to have sneaky BD whilst away!

Kay00 · 17/08/2020 10:02

Hi ladies, my average temps (before Ov) are about 36.2, down to 35.9, so a little lower than yours Smile. I'm currently on CD31 and 5 days Post Ovulation.

I ovulated sometime around CD 26 (this is my 2nd cycle, 1st I ovulated around CD 32) so my cycle will likely be a little shorter than last time. But I had to admit, this ovulation was a complete surprise, as there was none of the fan fare I had with the 1st! I missed my + OPK and had no EWCM. I didn't even feel my Cervix get soft (it went medium but not soft? I clearly missed that too). But I have had a shift in temperature, so I guess it happened.

From cycle 3 we will be officially trying, so I will need to be watching a little more carefully, and BD every other day Grin.

MintGreenLife · 17/08/2020 10:13

@Juno231 haha you and I were both counting then! In my half asleep state I think I counted to 10 around 15 times in my head before I felt like it would be OK to take the thermometer out my mouth, I'm assuming it's still accurate despite the lack of sound, but who knows!

Haha that's funny, in sync again! I feel the same about my temps, so far I feel like they have been a bit higher, and then randomly really low this morn.

Ohh weekend away sounds lovely, will keep my fingers crossed you ovulate sooner! I'm already worrying about a late ovulation and having to DTD at my sister-in-laws over our wedding weekend as that's where we are staying, praying I start seeing EWCM in the next few days - got a few weeks before the wedding anyway x

@Kay00 it's interesting how everyone's temps differ :) that's great that you ovulated earlier in your cycle! Hopefully for cycle 3 when you start trying it will happen even earlier :) I'm keeping everything crossed that I ovulate in a more timely manner this cycle ha x

OP posts:
Kay00 · 17/08/2020 10:21

@MintGreenLife I have my fingers crossed for you too... I'm hoping the wedding weekend will give you a lucky boost!!

MintGreenLife · 17/08/2020 10:23

@Kay00 ahh thanks :) if I ovulate at a decent time I will either be getting AF around the wedding weekend (urgh) or testing!!

OP posts:
Kay00 · 17/08/2020 10:39

@MintGreenLife I really hope its the testing!! Grin Grin Grin

MintGreenLife · 17/08/2020 10:41

@Kay00 thanks :) me too! x

Flowerkm · 17/08/2020 13:35

Hey everyone :)

@MintGreenLife same with me, not much going on CD 19, slightly sorer boobs today and sensitive nipples again which has re-appeared after going missing since my last AF, probably just gearing up for AF next Tuesday according to my app or sooner if my cycle is the same as last month. Went for a soggy run on lunch and the heavens opened but at least it rained while I was out otherwise i wouldn't have gone if it was raining lol
Fingers crossed you ovulate on a nice CD this month and you're not left waiting to long. I can't believe your wedding is so soon, that feels like it comes round super quick, have you got everything ready?

@Juno231 hope you ovulate soon as well, a sneaky BD can go either one way or the other, maybe ask them to pop to the shops!

@Kay00 Next cycle will also be my 3rd and we will be trying a lot of more than just our one hit wonder on ovulation day. (trying to be careful as my sister's wedding is April next year so planning a little around that) but ya know if it happens it happens xx

mrsmacmc · 17/08/2020 13:52

So I'm CD16 and this appeared today - DTD last night do you think it's worth DTD again today to 'cover all bases' 🧐❤️

Juno231 · 17/08/2020 15:05

@Flowerkm well done you for going on a run! I'm determined to go on one after work today as the pounds are creeping up lol.

@mrsmacmc that OPK looks promising! Looks like you might get a peak in the next few days?

crabette · 17/08/2020 15:22

Hey guys, sorry I've not been on in a while, it's been pretty boring with me!

I'm on CD2 - AF came yesterday... though its super light again, which is not at all how I remember my pre-pill/coil periods. App reckons I had a 31 day cycle and ovulated CD21... I felt it might have been CD19, but took a few days for my temp to go up. So that gives 10 day (or, being overly positive and ignoring the app, 12 day) luteal. 10 days seems pretty short, so hoping that increases this month!

@CharityRoyall I'm on Natural Cycles too - it says you don't really need the LH / OPK's, it's just to help the algorithm. I got a box of femometer ones from Amazon and just used them on the days marked LH on the app, as extra... it is meant to work ok without them though, if you're good at tracking temp!

mrsmacmc · 17/08/2020 15:27

@Juno231 - fingers crossed 🤞🏻enjoy your run after work tonight! I would need full waterproofs as the heavens have opened here! Trying to keep brain occupied with work and get ready for the meeting in the office tomorrow afternoon x

Meant to say I had bleeding gums last night which isn't normal for me!
