Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Flowerkm hmm, I'll have a think about it. I don't get the whole not being able to test any longer than 9 days thing 🤔 Do you get yours from Amazon? The reviews on there are pretty shocking with people saying they stopped working after just a couple of days.

Well that all sounds good ☺️ You best get DTD! Yeah I'm sure you're right, at least there have been positives in this last cycle!

Does anyone's OH take a multivit? Mine was and stopped as he ran out about a month ago and I've mentioned to him a few times that he should start taking it again but he doesn't seem keen, which I feel is a bit unfair given everything I'm taking and all the changes I've made to my diet etc. Not sure if it's even necessary for them to take one though?! X

@Pettylamby hmm hard to say. My first two AFs off the pill were really light, but definitely there. This current one was like you described - I woke up to pee around 6am and she was there already and in full flow! Perhaps you're getting spotting before she properly arrives? Seems a few people experience spotting Post Pill x

Mine takes the male version of pregnacare and then omega 3 as well. I have to buy them and physically hand them to him daily though, otherwise he doesn't make the effort to take them. I find it infuriating how shitty OH's seem to get about TTC, I always can't believe how little they care about it just because it's not their bodies doing most of it.

MintGreenLife · 11/08/2020 16:25

@Juno231 glad it's not just me! I have to say I feel a bit miffed and disappointed. When I pointed out how much I'm doing he said it was my choice. Taking one multi vit a day is hardly a hassle is it, meh.

Yeah me too, the nurse suggested OH takes folic acid and zinc so managed to persuade him to take both every day but it's annoying that we have to do all the research!

I've actually been using the CB advanced tests to track this cycle also so thought I'd let you know how it's gone for me. I wasn't going to this cycle as they are so expensive but I already had them in my posession so in the end I couldn't resist!
The first day I got a blank circle which I expected, but the next day I had a flashing smiley. I was so excited but didn't realise what was to come...I then had 15 more days of flashing smileys and was going to give up after using my last one today. However I finally got my static today Smile. I actually had a flashing smiley this morning but saw the test line was as dark as control. I know they say not to look at the lines but the test line has been getting darker the past two days...fast forward to this afternoon and I got a +ve on my opk stick so tried the CB again and FINALLY got the static! The test was also darker than control on the CB this time. Before today I was only using them once a day because, well, I'm not made of money, but so glad I checked twice today!

So I would say yes it's an expensive method if like me you are still having irregular cycles, and I know they don't recommend using them for PCOS. I personally think as long as you are using another method (poas) it's maybe not worth it until your cycles settle more as it can be stressful, but on the other hand if you are ok spending the money, it is nice to have the back up Smile

lawandgin · 11/08/2020 17:33

CD11 here and no hint of LH going up anytime soon. Has been sitting around 8% according to femometer. Please not another 60 day cycle! I wondering whether to just crack on with our fertility tests, (being as we know we need IVF anyway) or to give it another month or so. Gah!

Flowerkm · 11/08/2020 18:16

@MintGreenLife I think the reason behind it is they assume you won’t ovulate but as you know you do, you can still keep testing.
Mine are from Amazon, I haven’t used them enough to have issues but mine seem ok ☺️
Nope, my OH doesn’t and i really don’t think he would. I don’t think they understand it all and how important it is...it does seem unfair especially with everything we will stop doing etc. i already cut down on my caffeine and have de-caff now just to try and be a bit more healthy, I workout, I rarely drink...and he probably wouldn’t even take a tablet 😂
I think they care but as its not their body they just don’t fully get it?

MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 08:58

@Hopeful87 thanks for letting me know what OH was advised to take. Oh yeah totally - it's a two way street after all, not sure how they expect us to get pregnant by ourselves ha.

Oh gosh that must have been stressful! You must have felt like you had to keep up DTD for such a long time! I think we are going to stick to DTD every other day this cycle - we've tried the last few cycles, but when it's going on forever with no sign of ovulation we start to get a bit lazy. I might try the CB as would be helpful to have a warning to step it up a bit, as I think we will try DTD a every day for a few days before O. Really wish I had a rough idea of when O would be but literally won't have a clue urgh. Equally feel like that makes it hard to know when to start using the CBs etc, and I have pressed also, so am always guessing when to use that as only have enough to use three times each cycle. Praying everything is a little more straight forward this time...

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 09:01

@lawandgin it's still only early in your cycle :) I'm with you though, praying for a normal length cycle! How long have you been off the pill now? I would maybe leave it until you've been off for three months? I think I'm at around 4-4.5 months off now, and I believe that's why I finally had a successful ovulation last cycle - because the process of the eggs maturing takes three months x

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 09:05

@Flowerkm ahh gotcha. Hmm maybe I'll give them a try, can't hurt this once and if they don't work for me/if I have an irregular cycle again I'll know to give them a miss. Only thing is I wouldn't have a clue when to start using them. Think so far my ovulation dates have been around CD25, CD33 and CD40! But then if I do have a normal cycle this time I would need to start around CD10 surely? But can't keep going from CD10-40!! Think I'm talking myself out of it again now ha.

I'm the same - I've made so many changes and sacrifices. I've cut out caffeine completely and sugar, and I really love chocolate ha. Same with alcohol, I only have the odd drink when socialising now.

Af seems to have finished already for me! Was only three days, and the last day was very light. Hope that's OK, my last two AFs were 4 days but light all the way through. I mean without being too graphic I think I had about 4 x the flow I was getting, but over two days instead of four.

Yeah you're totally right, but we can't do this on our own ha x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 12/08/2020 09:14

@MintGreenLife mine is done too! CD1 was medium/light flow and yesterday light/spotting and that's it lol. I think since Oct I've only had one random period where it was more like 3-4 days and a bit heavier than this.

MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 09:18

@Juno231 we're so in sync ha. Ah well, a short period is a lot better than a long drawn out one. At least we can crack on now...although this stage makes me feel in limbo ha. I'm already feeling impatient for this cycle to get going, actually not sure how I managed to make it to CD30+ last cycle without ovulation! I think because I want to be really proactive this cycle I'm keen to get going ASAP! Also maybe now because I know I'm ovulating and have a decent luteal phase I feel like I might actually be in with a shot, whereas before I was just DTD hoping it might count, but not really knowing if it was even possible!

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 12/08/2020 09:34

@MintGreenLife I think it will be a good idea, something new to try and use them with an open mind. They do come with a little table that tells you when you should start testing based on your cycle length but as yours have varied it might be tricky to know when to start, maybe every other day or use them alongside the strips?

I think that’s a good sign it was heavier as your body was breaking down more this time? Is that how it works? So confusing isn’t it? I’m sure your next cycle will be a lot clearer, just try and find ways of passing the time as these days have never gone so slow x

Juno231 · 12/08/2020 11:07

@MintGreenLife I know what you mean - this part is such a non event. I am very happy however that we don't have FW during this heatwave! Don't think OH would cope lol.

Per my apps FW starts Wed next week for me - fingers crossed your cycle will have shortened enough for the same!

MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 11:11

@Flowerkm I think it's essentially that my lining thickened more, which makes perfect sense when you think about it as the lining thickens in the luteal phase, so before it only had a few days to do that, compared to 14/15 days this time!

Yeah I was thinking I would use the strips also, I got the Femometer ones on your and @Juno231 recommendation ☺️

How are you getting on anyway? Xx

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 11:11

@Juno231 oh gosh me too! That would not be enjoyable 😂

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 12/08/2020 12:21

@MintGreenLife makes so much sense and really good signs ☺️

Im doing good so far thank you, i got my peak on my strips this morning so I guess my body gives me a day warning as yesterday was very high on the strips but not quite a peak, i thought Id missed it but there it was this morning which is good. The CB picked up a static yesterday as i was close i guess and more sensitive so was able to pick it up, so CD14 today and Ive marked ovulation as today not yesterday as had more EWCM this morning.

Not really trying this month due to dates next year if we were to fall this month and actually this heatwave is a killer 😂🙈

Ah brilliant, i do really like the strips. I feel they work really well. Ill attach my pictures so you can see the difference and how close it was yesterday and then the peak today xx

Juno231 · 12/08/2020 12:37

@Flowerkm ah that's such a strong line - I'm glad you didnt miss it or anything, that's my one fear with OPKs! I agree that femometer strips have been super good to me so far :) There are other brands I see on here which seem to aaaalways give a pretty strong line which I'd find infuriating after getting my hopes up.

Girls I'm absolutely melting today - I keep having to pop my work laptop in the fridge cause it's so hot!

Flowerkm · 12/08/2020 12:45

@Juno231 ah thank you ☺️ i really thought I did miss it and I done 3 yesterday to try and catch it but had no change so was happy with this result today. I totally agree about the other ones, these are very good at not showing much of a line unless it picks up surges.
Ooh tell me about it, Im struggling so much today. 😂 omg, i never thought of doing that, my laptop gets so hot while its charging! I like the heat but not this hot, put me by a pool and Id be fine, not trying to work Xx

lawandgin · 12/08/2020 14:57

@MintGreenLife ahh I did reply earlier, but for some reason my post isn't showing. Maybe because I attached a picture? Anyway, I was saying that I may have spoken too soon as I got my first high on an OPK earlier! Will keep testing and hopefully see a peak soon 😊

MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 15:27

@Flowerkm thanks for sharing your Femometre sticks :) is helpful as I'll know what kind of levels/results I should expect. It's brilliant you're getting such strong lines, hopefully you'll find it super easy to get your peak when you do start officially TTC. Brilliant you're not having to TTC in this heat!

@Juno231 likewise! Not enjoying this heat at all. We are selling our house and had the estate agent here taking photos this morning, so was running around like crazy trying to tidy etc, was not nice! Also took it upon myself to do a last minute coat of paint on the front door 30 mins before they arrived, dried quick in the heat though ha. I wanted to workout this morn but there was no chance. All I'm good for now is flopping around urgh.

I'm really looking forward to OPKs that are a bit more straightforward. Last cycle I had a mid-dark line for about two weeks and it confused the hell out of me, and I never got my peak either.

@lawandgin awesome! That's really good :) at least you know your body is doing what it's meant to so that's a good sign. Praying I get good strong lines this cycle and that my OPKs are easy to understand.

Stopped my period so ready to literally and figuratively get on with it! My general plan is to OPK each day then a few times a day at peaks - does that sound sane? If its 141 days till my next period I am going to be raging...

@MintGreenLife - my husband takes vitamin D but nothing else. He'd take a pre conception multivitamin I'm sure, but is less convinced on the cutting back on beer...

@Pettylamby - I had some spotting about CD67 before period at CD141. My AF at CD141 was really similar to my on-pill periods.

MintGreenLife · 12/08/2020 16:06

@TheDaydreamBelievers you, me and @Juno231 are all in sync then 😀 Like you I'm going to be pretty annoyed if ovulation takes another 40 or so days to happen 🙄 Your plan sounds good. I'm going to do OPKs everyday from CD10 I think...maybe earlier, and I'm contemplating using the CB advanced ones too but undecided. Here's hoping things work out for at least one of us this cycle! My OH takes vitamin D too, maybe that's enough for now then. Haha yep same, don't think he would be impressed if I asked him to cut down on beer!

I’m excited to hear how everyone gets on this cycle! This is my first month temping. I’m currently on CD10 so hoping that I start to get some signs of ovulation coming over the next few days.

I’m never really sure about the EWCM, I never really know if what I have is creamy/watery/sticky or egg whites! I don’t really get that much of anything to know the difference. I hope that isn’t a bad sign.

That’s why I’m pleased to be temping, at least if I do get a rise I can relax that I am at least ovulating!

What CD is everyone else?

Flowerkm · 12/08/2020 21:39

@Elsie2021 Hey, Im currently CD14 and got peaks today on my OPKs ☺️ i had a bit of EWCM (i think it was that) but Im the same as you Im still not 100% sure if it is what I think it is and google still confuses me..so you’re not alone 🙈

Are you going to be doing OPKs as well or just temping? Hope you get some signs over the next week :) x
