Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@ShellMc2237 ah bless you, I totally get that you want to be super cautious, don't stress yourself out though x

@MintGreenLife forgot to add my chart in the end! I used to have heavier and much longer periods - at their worst they could last nearly 2 weeks! They didn't hurt much from what I remember though. Now I tend to have one light day and two spotting days and that's it.

@Juno231 hmm that's interesting that you've been having a bit of a stop start period the last couple of cycles. Well a light period that doesn't last very long is overall does sound quite nice, sure it's not an issue or anything. I guess the low temps above the coverline could be progesterone dropping just before AF arrives, which could make sense with the spotting? Has your temp always come down slowly? Or just these last two cycles? xx

Juno231 · 10/08/2020 18:07

@MintGreenLife ha can you see how on this chart my temp didn't drop until CD2? It was so confusing 😅. Sadly these are the only two cycles I've tracked so I don't really know what it looked like without the spotting. My temp drop was def less clear in the previous cycle though - see attached.

I like that we're in sync again - let's hope you have an earlier ovulation this time!

Sorry by "this chart" I meant the July one I posted just before 🤦‍♀️

welshgirl96 · 10/08/2020 19:03

I took my last pill 24th June, and had my withdrawal bleed 11th-15th July. I was due on my period today but the last week or so I felt different had a random day feeling nauseous, been irritable and having really bad hot flushes, so I took a test yesterday morning. First test I did was a one step and had a very faint positive. At this point I wanted to make sure with an early detection clear blue so went and bought a triple test pack. Did one of the tests from there and had a much clearer positive, following this I did a digital test and that came back positive too! Me and my SO are just so shocked with how quickly it's happened, I'm currently 4w so still early days! I'm driving myself crazy about the thought of miscarrying and can't seem to get as excited as I think I should in case something happens so I'm praying these next few weeks go quick so I can get an early scan hopefully at 6 weeks to put my mind at ease!

MintGreenLife · 10/08/2020 19:30

@Juno231 ah fair enough! Me too. God I really hope I ovulate at a decent time this cycle 😅 I'm a little worried about having a decent cycle length though as don't want to be on AF on my 'wedding' day. If I have a 30 day cycle AF will arrive a couple of days later which would be fine. Going to have to seriously put my mind to TTC this cycle though as would make life so much easier re our postponed wedding next year. This cycle just gone I lost the plot works DTD by around CD30, and then didn't ovulate until CD40 so totally messed up our chances 🙄 X

Thank you! Fingers are crossed Smile

@welshgirl96 aww that's great and positive to know things can get working again so quickly! Congrats Smile

@mintgreenlife I actually turned down a weekend away with my girls in a couple of weeks because of the potential of AF arriving. She ruins everything! Fingers crossed she comes after for you! I've had a slight rise in temp this morning and woke up in the night with sharp ovary pain. CD18 now. I am going to start looking into how I can bring ovulation forward. Definitely coming off the pregnancare!

@juno231 thanks for posting your charts, I have a small obsession with comparing these!! What does the RHR line stand for?

Flowerkm · 11/08/2020 07:47

Morning everyone and welcome to the new ladies ☺️ Ive been reading posts and keeping updated. Just been a hot few days and works picked up again.

I have a question about OPKs and the Clear Blue Digital ones that are meant to give a 4 day window and flashing smileys..

So...yesterday I had very light test lines on my strips and a blank circle yesterday on my CB but this morning I have a static smiley which means peak but why did I miss on the flashing? I feel it happens so fast and i have no warning apart from now...no EWCM or pain so Im wondering if it will happen tomorrow but just feels weird. Ill do a strip test around 10 (usual time i do them as don't beed FMU) and see what that says. I also missed my flashing faces last month, just went straight to peak.

I know temp will confirm but I wake up so many times in the night Im not sure if Im ready to start tracking xx

eternalflame2020 · 11/08/2020 08:54

Hey @flowerkm what CD do you start testing with the clear blue digital? As it takes an initial reading and then compares each day, I think you have to get started pretty early to get the flashing smiley.

I wake up so many times in the night but still get quite consistent temps at the same time every morning. You'll soon see if it's all over the place!

Flowerkm · 11/08/2020 09:04

@eternalflame2020 thanks for the reply :) i actually only used the CB yesterday which was CD12, I tend to use them towards my predicted ovulation to save using so many, so i use the strips daily/twice a day and then the plan was to use CB to back up any readings but that makes sense that I would need to use it to get a base reading almost.

Ah ok, thats really reassuring actually, it might be worth getting one then and giving it a go and like you said it won't take long to work it out if its all over the place ☺️ thanks x

Juno231 · 11/08/2020 09:07

@eternalflame2020 haha I'm obsessed with them too! RHR is resting heart rate. It tends to follow the trends of temps but gives me a much earlier heads up of AF being on its way than the temps do. The only reason it rose towards the end was because I had a boozy weekend away so I knew to ignore that part.

MintGreenLife · 11/08/2020 10:10

@eternalflame2020 urgh can you imagine the horror of AF arriving on your wedding day! I seem to have had two days of a heavy flow and now a light flow, so think she might be on the way out already. Not sure if that's normal or OK! So silly how we dissect every tiny little thing that happens in our body and try to work out if it's good or bad ha. Ohh let me know if you find anything about bringing ovulation forward - not sure I can cope with another CD40 ovulation argh!

@Flowerkm hey :) I don't know much about CB ovulation thingys, I was wondering whether I should try them this cycle as I really want to give this one all I've got ha. But I believe they measure both LH and oestrogen? And from past cycles I know my oestrogen has been getting high and staying high (because of EWCM) for a couple of weeks before my body finally manages to ovulate, so if that happens again I would probably end up with days on end of flashing smileys and spending a fortune. Can't make up my mind! How was your strip OPK?

OP posts:
Juno231 · 11/08/2020 10:18

@MintGreenLife how was your temp today? Mine shot back up to above last cycle's coverline but I think it's cause I slept so poorly due to heat. I've marked as abnormal just in case :)

MintGreenLife · 11/08/2020 10:26

@Juno231 I'm actually giving myself a little break from temping while AF is here :) I set an alarm for 4.30am to take it, and then go back to sleep, so it's nice not to have that disruption in the middle of the night, although I still get up to the loo at some point anyway! Sorry to hear you didn't sleep well, I've been the same. Do you find you feel really hot when AF is here? I've been so uncomfortable the last few days, even though my temp is obviously lower! I know it's hot, but it's been far hotter recently and I didn't feel this bad with the heat x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 11/08/2020 11:27

@MintGreenLife That’s what I thought, they detect different hormones and if you realised that your oestrogen is staying high you probably would get lots of flashing which is fine but it can end up quite pricey.
My strip was ‘High’ not a peak compared to last month but very very close so I will test again in a bit to try and catch it I think. Getting a bit crampy like last month so I think it’s coming and had a bit of EWCM this morning so fingers crossed I get a peak on my strips as well 😊

Your AF sounds like a good one this month, mine goes heavy-ish for a few days and then seems pretty light but I've never suffered from heavy flows not that i can remember anyway. I bet you're looking forward to a new cycle :D x

MintGreenLife · 11/08/2020 11:34

@Flowerkm Hmm, I'll have another look at them and the price and try to decide if they are worth it. On the one hand I think I might find it helpful to have the warning in the run up to ovulation, as this last cycle I just gave up on DTD by CD30! Think we had already been at it around 20 times by then and I had lost all enthusiasm urgh. It's so hard trying to time it with an irregular cycle! But equally I really want to put everything into it this time as it would be such a godsend if we conceived this cycle...maybe I'll just swallow the expense for the next two cycles as if it doesn't work out we're going to be in a pickle for the wedding next year.

Yay! Glad you got an almost positive, don't worry if it's not darker later as maybe you just missed your peak? Yay for EWCM! I remember coming off the pill and thinking I wonder if I'll even get any EWCM, but I've had it every cycle, and like I said last cycle I had masses of it for about two weeks, so confusing!

Yeah I guess that's probably pretty normal isn't it? From what I understand it's pretty standard to have heavier flow first few days. I had cramps all day the first two days too, but they've gone now. Hoping a short AF may mean earlier ovulation!? Think I'm getting ahead of myself there though ha. Urgh yes I really am. I'm praying that the fact that I had a normal luteal phase, normal AF, have been taking prenatals for several months now and am more than half way through this pill detox might all mean I ovulate at a normal time and have a normal cycle, but must try not to get frustrating if by CD20ish it's clearly not going that way ha x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 11/08/2020 11:47

@MintGreenLife although with your tricky cycles I can see those CBs flashing for days without giving you a static smiley. The difficult thing is that if it flashes for 9 days in a row you're supposed to leave it for the rest of the cycle and I suspect you'll get that before even ovulating!

MintGreenLife · 11/08/2020 11:49

@Juno231 hmmm, I best do some more research into them. I'm tempted as if it's going to help increase our chances this cycle then maybe it's worth it, but also don't want to make things more confusing!

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 11/08/2020 13:12

@MintGreenLife That is a tricky one, you are meant to leave it after 9 days or so but I guess if you go into the new cycle with that outlook knowing that could happen then it might work and will give you a good starting point, especially as you know you did ovulate this cycle. Aw, I really do have everything crossed that this cycle is your cycle and it happens.

Haha, I know! It’s funny isn’t it, I was so unsure if I would know what it was or if I would have any but you just know and it ‘feels’ different if that makes sense? I wouldn’t say I’ve had lots today but it does feel like there’s stuff there and my body is trying to produce things it needs to do so I guess that’s a good sign.

Your body does seem to have settled quite a bit and you had a good LP and a AF are all really good signs x

Pettylamby · 11/08/2020 13:27

So for the last few days I've felt like I'm gonna get my period--hungry AF, moody, today I am bloated.

Nothing really so far BUT I did get a tiny, and I mean tiny bit of spotting when I wiped but nothing since!?

Could this be things starting?

I remember when I got my periods before the pill I would wake up in the morning and as soon as i stood up I'd have a proper unmistakable start of a proper flow!

COME ON WHERE ARE YOU!!!
